Kayak Fly Fishing / East walker late report
« on: November 12, 2023, 09:04:57 PM »
This is a late report for a trip I made with my brother to east walker in mid October.

We showed up midday and fished 2.5 days on the river. The amount of people fishing during that time was insane! It was hard to find anywhere to fish and had to either fish behind several guys or fish undesirable spots. We were still able to connect with a good number of fish during the trip but it was mostly small browns around 8"-12" or planted rainbows that got washed down from the reservoir.

We did end up hooking a few nice browns with some coming off at the net and others shaking the hook when they decided to get airborne. We were catching them on a variety of nymphs in both fast and slow water.

When we were able to find a little elbow room the river was fishing good. Too bad they close it now for the winter months. Hopefully the browns pack on a little weight during the off season. I'll have a video of the trip up in a few weeks.

Hit the forebay on 11-10-23 from midday until sunset. I spent the first few hours cranking and throwing soft plastics up shallow hoping a few bass were still up feeding before they commit to going out deep. I missed a solid 3 pounder at the yak and had about a 4 pounder chase it up but didn't commit.

I ended up catching adecent striper on a squarebill up shallow and hooked into a big fish shortly after but it came off before I got a look. I figured it was a big striper by the fight it had and the next cast confirmed my suspicion. I had another solid hit but missed the fish and had a 10 to 12 pound striper chase the lure all the way to the yak. I switched back over the a SPRO little John and moved out to the deeper edge of the flats hoping for some stripers.

I ended up getting a bass finally, an American shad (first out of the forebay for me) and got into a handful more schoolie size stripers. The fly fishermen that were working the deeper parts of the flats did very well on the stripers throughout the day but the trolleys had a hard time.

I'll post a link to the video here or you can check it out on my YouTube channel at bucksnboils.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Eastern sierras report
« on: July 10, 2023, 07:42:26 PM »
I spent a few days bouncing around the eastern sierras in early July. Just about every lake was over capacity of water and the rivers/creeks were flowing high and dirty. It made it difficult to find places to fly fish but I was able to get in on a few spots. East walker was high but I caught a few fish in the spots I could reach. Owens kicked out a few small wild rainbows and browns along with a ton of big planters left over from independence day. I got a few casts in on some other smaller spots to include robinson creek. Everything produced fish but another 2 or 3 weeks and the fishing conditions should be in good shape over there.

Size 16 white Spanish bullet with a pink hot spot was the number one producer. Just about anything in black was picking up fish too with the dirty conditions.

Well unfortunately I didn't get any pics. Went over the the forebay for some fishing with my dad but there was a nasty accident on Pacheco pass that delayed us quite a bit. A chopper came in to pick up one if the victims, hopefully everything worked out.

Launched near the doc around 0800hrs and started with shallow diving cranks. Hit a few fish but eventually had to switch to a drop shot. The bite wasn't on fire but it was consistent. Got a mix of dropshot and crankbait fish throughout the day. I didn't fish for stripers but I didn't see them busting bait anywhere during my travels.

The video is on YouTube and here is the link

General Talk / Issues being able to see or post videos
« on: February 17, 2023, 07:59:57 PM »
So I have been having issues being able to post or view video posts on here for the last few months. It didn't used to be an issue but now it is. I was curious if anyone else has experienced this and if it can be fixed.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / O'neill forebay (video)
« on: December 24, 2022, 04:45:42 PM »
This report is late but it was a late October trip to the forebay. Normally the fishing during October is amazing but I had a tough time. The fish were really scattered and very picky. They stuck to live shiners mostly but I got a few decent fish during the day. Here's a video of the trip.

Kayak Fly Fishing / East walker river
« on: July 14, 2022, 01:53:30 AM »
I want to the eastern sierras for a few days with the family but made time to hit the east walker river each morning before the wife and kids were up and running.

I had a tough time on the river due to so much grass and moss. It made fishing conditions super tough and half the time I don't know if the fish could even see my flies. Despite the tough conditions I still got into some fish. I hooked into a few nice bows and browns that came off and had another nice brown snap me when he ran my Tippett against some rocks. A few average size browns and rainbows made it to the net but I did get a little dry fly action in one morning too.

I came to a big hole and found a few fish rising late in the morning. A few casts later and I had a solid rainbow and brown to the net. All in all the fishing was decent on the walker but conditions made it tough to present the flies decent to the fish. Going far down stream to the faster water fishing tight to the holes behind boulders was the most consistent way of hooking into some fish. A size 12 stonefly up top and an 18 jujubaetis below was my best nymph set up. They mostly hit the baetis. I had some great video of the trip but my gopro decided it didn't want to save everything properly so I have to go through and see what video I have left.

River flows dropped a lot down to below 80cfs while I was there and it was hot but the water stayed cool enough for the fish until about 10. It started raising quick after that.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Fly fishing near yosemite (video)
« on: June 28, 2022, 09:52:29 PM »
I went out this last weekend to fish a river near the yosemite boundary. The weatherman was off by a few hours about the conditions so there was some rain with a lottle lightning at the start but it turned into a nice day with some pretty steady action.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Lower stanislaus 3-9-22
« on: March 10, 2022, 03:05:56 PM »
Was in the mood for some fly fishing after a few months of the off season so I headed to lower stanislaus where it opens on the 1st of the year. The water was kinda high and moving pretty quick. The dam said it was releasing at 600 cfs but I wanted to get out for a few hours.

Perfect weather for fishing but it was tough. I had my indicator about 8ft above my lead fly and still had to put on a few shots to try and get deep enough in the slower pools. I missed a couple fish and got two to the net. They weren't of any size (8" and a 12") but still fun. First took a size 20 uv perdigon and the second took a size 14 red headed pheasant tail.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Eastern sierras December trip (video)
« on: December 20, 2021, 03:50:08 PM »
Went on a trip to fish for some crowley steelhead earlier this month. I immediately hooked into a beautiful fish on upper owens but that was short lived. I fished that river for 2 days and that was my only fish. I hit hot creek a bit and did much better but had a tough time keeping fish on the line. Here's a video of the trip.

Here is a short video of a trip I made in October this year. I saw some really nice fish in some of the holes but had a rough time getting any takers. I definitely need to put in some more work on this river to get to know it better. Planning on hitting some of the  rivers that rivers open year round soon.

Here is a video of a September trout fishing trip my wife and I went on. Had a really cool encounter with some bears!

Took the kids to arroyo seco river for some fly fishing. I'm not the most experienced fly fisherman so I was happy to get a few fish. I didn't get anything big but for small water fishing, I was happy with what I got. Taking the dog definitely made it difficult to not spook the fish at times...
