I’ve threatened to paddle that area before but never have. It looks like a neat area to do some wildlife viewing.

AOTY / Almost didn’t get an AOTY fish in March.
« on: March 31, 2024, 07:43:32 PM »
Phew, down to the wire on Easter!! But a random catfish while bass fishing saved the day.

Throwing a 3 inch purple/black swimbait on a brush covered 10 ft flat on the local lake.

Buzzer beater!!!

Also caught some largemouth, smallmouth, and a crappie! 4 species in 1 day. Plus a bonus carp.

Keep grinding AOTY all, spring is here and the bite is heating up!!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Bead Management

Plano makes the edge series of boxes. They make small containers that fit into the large boxes. They have different sizes. The small containers have lids and some have little dividers too. Great for storing hooks/swivels/beads/etc.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Freshwater Line Choice

I like to use thin braid to whatever leader I feel like using that day. Currently my spinning feels are spooled with 15 lb berkely x9 braid (advertised at .005 in). I would try to use braid that is thinner in diameter than whatever diameter leader you want.

Higher thread count braid (ie 8 or 9 or 12 strand) will be quieter thru the guides while fishing. Lower thread count (4 or 5 strand) will be louder, but I feel like they are easier to tie knots to the leader with.

Leader length depends on personal preference. I usually go longer in clear water and shorter in dirty water. Also a little longer is nice if you retie a lot.

I dug some fishing gear out of the garage this morning to take a picture of what I use.

CORRECTION: I have 12v stepped down to 6v. For some reason I thought it was 9v, but I think that was on an old livewell.

So I have the 12v-6v converter and a fuse wired into a waterproof box. The battery and everything fits and it goes in the stock Hobie livewell battery spot.

AOTY / Re: Legal method of measure for AOTY?

I’m just glad it’s not on the upper part of the leg  :smt044

I have done exactly that. I got rid of the 6v Hobie battery and am using a 12v 10ah battery from nocqua. It is stepped down to 9v. I used to only get about 1/2 day of fishing until the battery died. Since switching I haven’t run out of battery.

You can also wire in a livewell timer in which will further extend your battery life.

I like the summary of regulations starting on page 43. Much easier to quickly find regs for some obscure fish.

By proxy would Sail Power also be allowed in the standard entry?

Al I was poking around looking at old entries and i wasn’t really able to tell when sail entries were actually caught while sailing or if somebody just accidentally clicked the sail box.

I’m all for just letting everyone be in the same class, but I don’t want to rock the boat too much by changing too many rules at once.

AOTY / AOTY Feb 2024 wrap up.

AOTY February 2024 wrap up.

2 months down! We have been having a decent amount of rain and winter weather which has made fishing challenging. Despite that a few brave souls have gotten out and entered some fish!

We have 11 anglers who have entered a combined 9 different species of fish. Some of those are some pretty darn big too!

Great job to those who got out and entered some fish! Hopefully those of you who have yet to sign up will do so! It is still wide open right now with plenty of time to get involved!

If you are interested in taking part in Angler Of The Year click the links below or send me a message and I will activate your account.

It is a great way to get more involved with kayak fishing and learn to catch new species as well as make new friends and fishing partners.

AOTY / Electric motors are now allowed for AOTY.
« on: March 02, 2024, 02:47:19 PM »
The votes to include electric motors passed the votes to not include them by 1 whole vote!  :smt044

I knew it would be a little divisive, but I was surprised that there was only a 1 vote difference.

If you have an electric and want to play in AOTY you are welcome to.

I sort of forgot when the end date was of the survey. I thought it was March 1  :smt001

Looks like electrics get a shot in 2024 with a 2 month handicap  :smt003

I’ll make a post about it.
