I'm really curious just where all these quillbacks are reportedly being caught.

Anecdotally, Crescent City had a banner year for quillback this year.  I saw several reports with a retained quillback and a note that there were several others encountered.

I have caught several quillback in CC before.  I don't recall ever catching one south of there.

You are correct, Jerry. The term has been hijacked and warped into something else. Based on the most frequently-used terminology, Jesus was extremely woke.

Its a dog whistle word that means whatever the reader thinks it should mean.

I like the way you maximized the limited space in the back of your truck.

Up front too!  So maxxed - I barely fit in there.   :smt003

Good thing my crabbing spot is just 8 miles or so up 101 at King Salmon, California.

I knew I recognized that road. I love that seafood place at the end of it.

It’s for sale!

General Talk / Re: Source for Gaff hooks?

I got a stainless rod, bent it, and filed a point on it. Getting a sharp point takes some work, but the rest of it is super-simple:

Yup, I've also gone that route, pretty simple if you have a jig or suitable form to bend it around. And a grinder :)

This is how I have done it.  For a straight gaff I use threaded stock.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Pike minnow

Sorry if I offended anybody I have changed the title to Pike minnow.

You have not offended anyone here no worries! I didnt know until recently either!

Meh.

It’s such a small gesture to stop using squawfish.  Some folks are deeply offended by the continued usage of modestly objectionable place names but no one is giving up anything by changing the name of squawfish or negro bar or whatever.  Those place names can rest in the dustbin of history.  Just use the new names.  Or as in the case of the reversion to native names like Patrick’s point being changed to sue-Meg up here, just go with the new yet ancient name.

It costs you nothing.

You could hide a couple silvers inside a cowcod.  Halibut are too flat.  For a chinook you probably want to bring a blow up sex doll with you and hide it in that.

1.  Nobody is going to touch your sex doll
2.  You can prop her up in the passenger seat and use the HOV lane to and from the fishing grounds.

And definitely make a youtube video, but pixilate the face of the sex doll and the chinook to protect the identity of the innocent.

San Clemente island is off limits. Good thing you didn’t go there.

General Fishing Tips / Re: mid hull handle replacement

Go to the pick and pull, get a couple oh shit handles.  Drill out rivets from center and use stainless hardware with backing material- cut piece of plastic cutting board works well - use some blue locktite on your threads, fill any old holes with plastic/jb weld/w.e., and you’re gtg.

There are bass and yellow perch in the river below iron gate.  I've caught yellow perch in a crawdad trap at klamathon bridge before.

Crash,
Our hotel is at Eureka, I will try to convince my wife to drive a little further to Trinidad or Crescent City. Look forward to visit these places.
Thanks for the info!
Chris

Crabbing from shore in Eureka is an exercise in avoiding tweekers.  You can catch rockfish in the bay at the jetties and there are crab in the bay but the crabbing in the bay is poor for the most part except in winter.  Other than the jetties there is no rocky structure for 20 miles in either direction.  The main fishery in the bay right now is california halibut.

Go to Humboldt Bay, Trinidad, or Crescent City.

There is no spot south of Eureka that will be open for rockfish and crab on the 4th of July that would be appropriate for your purposes.

From the CPFW map below it seems Rock Fish can be taken from all depth in Humboldt County? (north of Shelter Cove) But I don't know where are sands for crab or rocks for fish, more detail will be helpful. thanks.

Trinidad is probably your best option then.  Crabing is right out front of prisoner rock and rockfish are near rocks, theres a protected launch and its all really close.

If you need to stay on shore, CC is probably better, you can crab off B street pier and fish rockfish at the groin or on the jetties.

The line for the northern management zone is the 40 10 line which is in the middle of nowhere and impossible to get to without really really trying.  Need a power boat or a overnight hike or skillz like Mr. X.

Can't kill Kevin.

Glad to see you upright and still fogging a mirror.  Demotion be damned.

Any plans to harass the local trout?

Fish Talk / Re: Rockfish Reg. Petition Workgroup - Need your help

Oppose.  This doesn’t seem well thought out, and groups different proposals together unnecessarily.

What exactly are your goals?  Seems like you want to reduce the limits, and require descenders, and enable non-motorized vessels.  They are all different topics.  Why couple them together?

What impact do non motorized vessels have on the fisheries?

-Allen

Mandatory descenders make perfect sense and decrease release mortality significantly especially with our all depth seasons. It’s long past time to implement a descender requirement just like every other pacific coast fishery.

I feel like I missed the background discussion about this idea/petition. Why would we petition to reduce the bag limit by 50 percent?

I’m not sure that there has been much proposed here that I actually support with the exception of mandatory descenders. I could probably be talked into a slot limit for lingcod if it also extended the season.  Other than that…
