Did you measure diagonal: rear driver to front passenger?

My 2014 sienna will get 10’+ from the tail gate to the dash with the center console removed.

I top it or pull a Malone trailer.

My go-to poke pole is an 18’ telescoping fiberglass flag pole for wind socks ($35) or a 10’ telescoping aluminum painter’s extension pole ($15).  The aluminum is nice and light, good for long walks!!

I have had too many bamboo pole snap with a heavy eel on the other end.

Somehow makes me think about the urban legend of dropping a lit cherry bomb down the toilet at school.

Ah to be a total delinquent again...  for delinquency’s sake, of course.

Good catch!

Bushy

Started off dry...

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / GWS Santa Cruz

Fished a skiff off the SC wharf on Labor Day.

Deployed wind anchor after the wind picked up about a mile off Steamers.  Noticed a silhouette that I thought was a school of bait fish. Realized the shape of the school was pretty consistent and what it actually was: 12-16’ GWS.

It’s a terrible pick because it kept its distance. If you zoom into the middle of the frame you can make out the general shape.

I was also going to suggest compression in the lower back sciatic nerves. I recent blew out my L5/S1 disk, my big and second toes are always numb.

I would think stretches and changing your position periodically would help to relieve the pressure. Netting a 20# salmon for example would be a truly ideal way to change your positioning.  I suggest you try that and see if improves your condition.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Making a rod float
« on: September 03, 2021, 09:23:28 AM »
I use the closed cell packing foam that’s about 1/2” thick. I cut it to fit the space between the end of the handle and the first eye. Sometimes I can get a couple of wraps of the material and cinch it down with zip ties.
I tested mine in a friends pool and it floats the rod and reel perfectly. I spoiled off some line to hold onto, tightened the drag, and threw it in. Not sure what and extra 8oz of lead on the line would do.  Probably just make the handle of the rod stand straight out of the water so it would be easier to grab?
I was thinking about Moo’s video too. I think it is titled “Clown Show”.

+1 on Clark Fork off 108. Also consider West Walker  on the other side of Sonora Pass.  Good camping all along that stretch of 108. I usually do that area in early October to catch the Aspens, nights are cold though.

I was also going to suggest Upper Sacramento River.  Lots of good water and camping all along 5. Trains can be loud at night though. If you head up that way check in at the Ted Fay fly shop in Dunsmuir, assuming they are still open. Ask about Cantera Loop.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Scotty lake troller pulley design problem
« on: August 16, 2021, 02:24:01 PM »
LouG, Just like 4# is an improvement over a 40 oz, a 6# really helps when the fish are hugging the bottom.  Being able to dial in on what depth you are actually in. Is an asset. After about 60ft. The angle gets too steep. And a heavier weight is needed.  I use 8# in lakes. The 8# does make the kayak less stable. I have an outback, so I imagine
the revo would be worse. It's all about trade offs.
I use a Cannon Lake Troll downrigger with an 8 pound weight on my Revolution.  It doesn't make the Revolution less stable, but I have mounted the downrigger so the cable is only an inch or so from the side of the kayak. See https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=12575.msg138905#msg138905.  The 8 pound weight gets blown back behind my kayak less than the 4 pound weight I used to use with my Scotty Laketroller, and keeps the weight visible on my fish finder deeper, at higher speeds, and with higher drag lures.

If it works for you, that’s great. My 4# ball has never left the scope of my FF, and I have never felt the need for a heavier weight.  I was surprised at the notion of going so big. What can I say ... I am tippy in my Revo. Maybe it’s my big head or my fat mouth.  I guess I do need heavier balls!! :smt003

I think the Lake Troller is recommended at no more than 4lbs of lead.

This is exactly what I was thinking.  Why do you need an 8# ball?  You are already getting superior depth control over a 40oz ball. You also have all the extra weight leveraging the gunwale of your boat creating stress and balance issues. My Revo is tippy enough, I don’t need to be giving Mr Jones any advantage.

General Talk / Re: Is the bull kelp rebounding?

There needs to be more dive days every year and get rid of the more heavily populated urchin spots! The more we can clean out the faster the kelp can recover. I wish DFG would start re locating some sea otters from SC and Monterey area to some of the northern areas where the kelp is making a come back! They would put the urchins in check fast and the kelp beds would grow as the otters population and area expands. I know they can’t move otters to an area with no kelp but there are some areas where the kelp beds are getting thick enough to sustain some otters.

I had similar thoughts and then learned that sea otters need Giant Kelp, and it’s not found north of SF Bay I believe.

Just an ignorant question/observation, but I thought Russian River/Fort Ross, etc., were all established based on otter fur trade??

Or are you saying the the bull kelp has been eliminated from these historical ranges north of SF?

Hate to be another fanboy, but thanks to you, we are a regular Tegula-eating family (in the wintertime).

Congrats on Phinishing!  Was that a degree in Post hole Digging, or how to Pile higher and Deeper?

Welcome BigDistance!

There is a lot of historical conversations about kayak specs and if you have specific questions, you can post those too.  People are not shy about their opinions.
