General Talk / River Kayak Advice
« on: January 04, 2021, 03:53:53 PM »
Happy new year!

I am going to sell my wife's OK T13 and buy a couple of kayaks for the river. We usually go to Little River, Big River or wherever. We want sit on top paddle kayaks possibly with chairs and something in the 10' range. They will be easier to transport but not as fast as the good old T13.

I was just wondering if anyone had some advice on a good fit for what we are looking for. I saw some interesting models on the Headwaters site...

Thanks!

Hobie Kayaks / Crab Trap Rack for an Outback
« on: October 29, 2020, 08:51:09 PM »
I am trying to setup my new Outback for crabbing. I was going to make an "H" bar out of PVC and stick it in the scupper holes however there are only two scupper holes in the rear. Is that what you guys do to stack your traps? I'm looking for ideas. Pictures help...thanks!

It looks like the opener is going to be blown out!?

Hobie Kayaks / Darkness Approaches PVC for Hobie Rack
« on: July 24, 2020, 05:28:38 PM »
I took a test ride this week at CCK and put an order in for a new Outback. I'm going to the dark side.

One question I had is what size PVC do you use for storage on a mobile wood rack. I have seen 2", 3", PVC, and ABS. Most people seem to use PVC.

Any idea of what diameter is best?

Thanks!

General Talk / Cant see video
« on: July 24, 2020, 04:12:41 PM »
Does anyone know why I can not see videos on the forum? I can see pics. This has been going on for a while. For instance...I was looking at the GWS thread and can not see anything in Fishing Addicts post, just a blank page.

Thanks!

General Fishing Tips / Black Cod
« on: April 28, 2020, 02:39:14 PM »
Black Cod (or Butterfish,or Sablefish are other names) is one of my favorite fish to eat but I have never caught one. I have watched videos of people fishing for them and they go deep and use traps, 700 feet seems to be a good depth.

Has anyone caught Black Cod from a kayak? I doubt it...but I have heard of fisherman targeting them in the San Francisco bay. Not sure if that was on line or using traps.

Just bored because of COVID so I started looking into it.

Thanks...

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Wheeleez Bearings
« on: August 20, 2019, 09:08:10 PM »
I was installing wheels on the aluminum axle of a Wheeleez cart after I landed and noticed the bearings are not moving. That means the hub has been spinning on the axle instead of the bearings spinning. I'm not sure how long that has been going on but I launch in the sand a lot so I plan on servicing the bearings a couple of times a year. The bearings had serious grinding going on...the ones that were spinning anyway, two were totally locked up.

This video is good but a bit long winded.

I think graphite is a good idea.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Accurate Tern
« on: July 16, 2019, 08:40:00 PM »
If anyone is using this reel just wondering how you like it. I have never fished for salmon on a kayak and trying to get rigged up. https://www.accuratefishing.com/tern/

I had settled on an Avet SX but after seeing it I prefer a star drag. I was also considering a Shimano Tekota A but I would prefer to buy a US made reel. The Shimano is nice though...

Thanks!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Hydroskin or Paddle Jacket
« on: November 27, 2018, 02:28:35 PM »
I have never had a paddle jacket and was thinking of getting one, then I saw a hydroskin at a kayak shop in Petaluma. It looks nice, they have a 0.5 and 1.5 mm hydroskin.

https://www.nrs.com/product/15037.02/nrs-mens-hydroskin-15-jacket

Does anyone have a hydroskin? Any pros/cons between the hydroskin and paddle jacket?

I was thinking that the hydroskin would give you more warmth and less drag if you had to swim to shore for some reason.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Garmin 5 Blank Screen
« on: November 26, 2018, 05:49:46 PM »
I have my FF mounted on the mod pod of my T-13. When I bring up crab traps I lay it flat down on the mod pod. I think I may have hit a button to dim the screen??

I checked voltage at the power cord and get 12 volts at the FF. I have followed some instructions from the Garmin website: TIP:

From any screen, press the power button   repeatedly to scroll through the brightness levels. This can be helpful when the brightness is so low you cannot see the screen.

Also tried this:

Not much luck so far so I was wondering if anyone has been through this before. I have tried to power it up but I don't hear a beep when press the button...although I cant remember having a beep when it was working. I was thinking of ordering a new power cord but I don't think that is the problem.

One thing I will do if I get this working is to have a hard copy of my favorite fishing spots so I wont lose them if the FF bites the dust!

I have this crab trap that I don't use anymore. It comes with a zinc. If you know someone with a boat it is a good pot. Not for use off a kayak...unless you have a big one :smt003 I'm in SF.
