General Fishing Tips / Best Way to Repair Poly Neeting on a Crab Trap?
« on: January 16, 2022, 10:40:21 PM »
I was getting all my gear out today for Crabfest and noticed I have one hoop net with some tears/openings in the poly netting. What is the best way to fix this? Zip ties maybe?
I tried to find some poly netting repair line, but it seems to already come in "net form" instead of a handy short roll. Any tips?

Thanks!

Apparently, you need to watch for a buoy if you head out to Bodega...

General Talk / Help Change Generator Hours at Doran!
« on: January 29, 2020, 08:42:16 PM »
How many of you were surprised to learn that the Sonoma Parks had changed their generator hours this past weekend?

The camp hosts came around and knocked at our door, saying it had been changed about 6 months prior... I was about to jump in the shower of our trailer when they told us the new hours were now 8am to 8pm. We had planned on running our generator to charge our equipment from 8-10pm since we were gone all day!

While leaving, the incredibly sympathetic staff at the main booth encouraged us to contact the Regional Parks office. They told us that others had complained about the generators going until 10pm, so the county changed it.

The staff recommended that we share the contact info and to get as many people as possible to contact the parks office!
If there is enough polite and professional feedback about the current hours, we might be able to get them to change it. We are such a large forum, we could easily get thousands of calls/emails in to them (however, we need to be mindful and do not want to give a bad impression of NCKA or the event....).

Personally, I think we should be allowed to run generators from 7am to 10pm - this allows us time to catch-up on some computer work in the evening, charge equipment, and cook our crab!

Please consider contacting the Sonoma County Regional Parks, and let them know that as a long-time camper at Doran, you would like to see them change the generator hours and restore them to the 7am-10pm time frame. Let them know how it impacts you and your use of the camping facilities.

Contact them by email (which is probably best):

General Talk / OT - Slide Out on Trailer Problems
« on: April 12, 2017, 07:26:21 PM »
I know there are tons of smart people here on the forum  :smt003, some more technically inclined than others....Im hoping 'and a praying that some of you might be able to help me trouble-shoot the slide-out issue we're having.

The trailer is about 2 years old, and has one Schwintek slide. It's been operating fine until a few months back, and it seems as though either one side is sliding faster than the other, or that one side is starting sooner than the other. It will start to move and then hesitate on one particular side.

I took a video but need to figure out how to post it here (it's an MP4)!

Ive watched a few You Tube videos on these types of slide-outs, thinking that maybe our slide needs to be re-set? But Ive tried those steps and Im not sure if Im doing it right.
To add to the frustration, when we got the trailer the dealership told us that we should stop depressing the button as soon as the slide-out stops moving. Ive now heard that no, that is not correct - and that we should actually hold-down the power switch for several seconds after the slide-out stops.....so we might have screwed the thing up ourselves.

Anybody have ideas on what we could do?

I'm also wondering - has anyone done business with Sac Valley RV in Loomis? I called them today and they think one of the motors might be going out. I just want to be sure they are honest and reputable (they did have good reviews online) if we end up needing professional help  :smt044

General Talk / Ukulele Music List for Crab Fest 2017!
« on: June 22, 2016, 09:50:37 PM »
***************UPDATED MUSIC LIST*****************

Yes, you read it right - we are planning AHEAD this year for the UKULELES at Crab Fest!  :beer2
We are 6 months out and it's time to start practicing! Don't try to fool yourself by saying that you have plenty of time.... the clock is ticking and before you know it, you will be packing-up your crab pots, kayak, and ukulele and heading to Bodega Bay.

A group of us (Adele, Roxanne, Regina, and myself) are meeting about every week to learn a set of basic songs, and we thought we'd share this "master" song list & music so that our fellow NCKA'ers can learn the same songs along with us (we would like to come-up with about 10 songs total that are 2-3 cords, so easy stuff).

The best part of our plan is that we'll actually have some songs we'll ALL know, and be able to play as a group. There are a few of you out there who are highly talented, and of course you'll be expected to play some more complex tunes for our listening enjoyment at Crab Fest! But having a few easy songs in our pocket & ready to go will get more people to grove with their ukes.

So far on the music list we have:

-Tiny Bubbles
-The Lion Sleeps Tonight (2 versions)
-Banana Boat Song
-Mockingbird
-Island Style
-Boardwalk
- Hey, Soul Sister by Train
-LING FEVER by Scotty
-Riptide
-I Wanna Be Like You
-The Bare Necessities
-Here Comes The Sun

...ok, so that last one by Train is a little tougher,  :smt044   but it's a cool song and has a great sound! If you have any favorites to add to the list that are in the 3 chord range, email me the music and we'll see about adding it.

Attached is the music for the songs above - print out your own copy and get practicing!

Whooyoooo! ROCK ON!  :smt035 :headbang:

General Talk / Home Needed - Oroville
« on: March 26, 2016, 10:19:18 PM »
Hi guys,
My son is looking for a place to rent in the Oroville area, and I thought there might be some leads here between my NCKA bro's and sisters!

He was living with his great-grandfather and helping him with his care - they called themselves the "two bachelors", haha.
Grampa, who was 91, sadly passed-away in January. My son isn't able to stay in the house on a long-term basis because of the estate/trust. He is an extremely responsible young man, and mature for his age - he works for Oroville PD and is almost done with his degree in criminal justice at Chico State. He is also into kayak fishing and has participated here and there with NCKA - I'd like to get him his own kayak as a graduation present.

He is looking for a one-two bedroom place, preferably a house where he can keep his older Labrador (she is kennel trained). We are finding that it's tough to find places in decent areas, and he would probably be one of the best tenants someone could hope to have.

If you know of someone who might have a place to rent or a lead on a place, please PM me! Sometimes the best homes are found by word-of-mouth!

Huge thanks,
-Cherie

General Talk / Trailer Question - Do YOU Leave the Propane Fridge On?
« on: January 27, 2016, 08:07:59 PM »
OK, I am debating about this and want to weigh out the pros and cons.
Our trailer has a 2-way fridge, propane and electric.

I have heard how some people get the fridge going at home with the electric and then when they hit the road, they switch on the propane and have the fridge run under gas power while traveling to their destination.

At first thought, it doesn't sound like the safest thing to be driving down the road with the propane going! But then I wondered what the risks really are.

So - do you drive with the fridge being powered via propane?

General Talk / UPDATE - Great News! (Given the Boot)
« on: January 16, 2016, 08:06:26 PM »
I just wanted to give a shout-out to all of those who offered words of wisdom and recommendations for jobs across California. You all gave me hope and some excellent leads on jobs, and for that I am incredibly thankful!  :smt006

SOOOOOOOOOO............drum roll please!
I am super excited, doing jumping-jacks, and high-fiving everyone because........I  accepted a job offer! I am now the AVP of HR at a local banking institution in northern California and I start next week!
The best part is that banks have lots of holidays, haha - so that means more time OTW!
Woot! Woot!   :groupwave

-Cherie

Hi Guys, well - I was laid off of work today. My company was bought by another one, and they do all the HR work at the corporate level...so my services were no longer needed.
 :angry7:

This means I have plenty of time to get the trailer packed for Crab Fest! I am working hard at staying positive, ya see  :smt044

Anyone need an HR Manager? A really good one?

Just found out that Jake Shimabukuro is playing at the Crest Theatre on Saturday night, 10/25. There are still tickets available, but they are a little pricey. Anyone going?

General Talk / New Pattern on Wet Suit Deters Sharks
« on: June 05, 2014, 03:18:56 PM »
I was watching a "Ted Talks" and saw this pretty cool invention:

http://www.ted.com/talks/hamish_jolly_a_shark_deterrent_wetsuit_and_it_s_not_what_you_think#t-517981

Apparently, they are trying to design a new wet suit that deters sharks. They studied which patterns were "engaging" to sharks and which ones were not, with the idea that they could prevent shark attacks at least to some degree.

General Talk / Future Kayakers - Our 4-H Project Rocks!
« on: May 06, 2014, 12:56:24 PM »
Some of you know that I am volunteer 4-H Leader (and have been for many years)  and that I typically lead projects that teach kids and families about raising chickens. Well this year, I thought it would be very cool to introduce 4-Her's to kayaking  :smt004

I approached Dan Arbuckle at Headwaters about helping us and he was game for it  :smt044...so we started with some "on land" meetings and then moved to the water. Dan was fantastic with the kids and kept them engaged, entertained, and excited about learning how to kayak.

We have several who can't wait to hit the water again and do some fishing! These are our future NCKA'ers in the making, haha.

As a fun thing to present to our 4-H Club, I created a video which highlights some of our project moments so far. I thought some of you guys might enjoy seeing it as well. We have some fundraisers in the works, and who knows - maybe we will have a 4-H fishing tourney!  :fish:

General Talk / Ukefest 2015!
« on: January 29, 2014, 09:35:36 PM »
Since we already have the "dates" for Crabfest 2015 (or at least the jetty is just about full for that particular weekend a year from now, haha) I figured we better get a thread going in anticipation of our annual ukulele jam!

Early, I know - but this gives us plenty of time to practice in time for the big event  :smt044

Attached is a file I created/scanned that has a little bit of everything...things I have collected from various classes. It includes tips for players, chord charts, tuning info, and a few songs we figured might be easy to start with. Perhaps if we give this group of songs a shot and maybe have a few jam practices with these in mind, we will have a good set of tunes ready to go.

Take a look and if you find some other good ones, post 'em.
Hey Rey - have any others you want to add?

Here's the link to our other thread which includes more music files: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=48861.0

General Fishing Tips / Tying Extra Rope On Buoys?
« on: January 19, 2014, 07:40:59 PM »
I have a question about tying rope on the buoys and crab traps....

The Palomar rep (at the Headwaters class) tried to explain how to tie the extra rope around the buoy so that there would be no slack (yet at the same time, the way he was tying it allowed for the right amount of rope to come out for the depth of water).

Anyone remember how to do that? I can't seem to duplicate what we was showing us to do!

I have about 50 ft of rope on each trap, but I won't need that much.

Thanks guys! Looking forward to Crab Fest! Got my bait bags in the freezer and getting the traps all squared away next.

General Talk / Trustworthy Mechanic in Oroville? (Non Yak Related ;-)
« on: January 03, 2014, 11:53:03 AM »
Hello my NCKA brothers and sisters!

So my son just called - he is using my old car while going to school up at Butte. It's a Toyota Rav 4, 2003, FWD 2 cyl engine.

Apparently he took it in for an oil change and was told that there is a severe oil leak coming from either the valve cover or intake. The chassey is covered in oil.  He also needs to replace the power steering fluid and have some work done on the breaks.

I need to find a reputable and trustworthy mechanic in the Oroville area that he can go to, who is reasonable cost-wise (college students don't have alot to spend on car repairs). I have no idea of where to start, and I thought I would check with you guys first!

Any recommendations either way (who to go to or NOT got to) would be GREATLY appreciated!

-Cherie
