Kayak Sailing / Anyone sew sail before?
« on: February 07, 2024, 11:33:27 PM »
I have a snark sailboat whose thin sail is deteriorating after 40 years. It may not hold up to strong wind any more.

My friend happens to have a sail that is torn. Supposedly the wind blew so hard, that the sail is ripped apart into two pieces. (Is it possible? this is very strong sail fabric.)

Anyway he gave me the sail pieces. I think I can cut from one of the torn pieces a section that matches the shape and size of the snark sailboat, and use that instead. Has anyone cut and sew sail before? Any general tips?  Especially, do I need to do anything with the cut edge?

We have a low tide day coming up. I am planning to go visit a spot in Mendocino that is outside any protected or reserved areas. A lot of purple urchins will be exposed. Can I hammer those to help with the infestation problem?  If so, what are the rules? Is there a limit on how many I can smash? (Not harvest)

If I harvest some, what’s the limit?  Just want to verify against what I researched.

I see a few red ones in the mix. Are they a problem too to be eliminated?

Finally, I heard that a puncture by a small pointy hammer will kill the urchin ; doesn’t need to be completely crushed. Is this true?

General Talk / Where can I download 2023 full year's tide table?
« on: October 29, 2023, 10:10:24 PM »
Does any site provide this?  I hope to keep this for record.

Alternatively, I remember sporting goods store used to have tidetable free for the taking.  Do they still offer this?

My dock was damaged last winter.  Wind/wave was so violent that the boat ripped off the piece of 2x8 board that the cleat is attached to.  For this upcoming winter I want to put in some shock absorber.

But as with anything marine, this is a bit pricey.  And the ones I looked at does not even list how much force it can sustain.

So I am thinking, can I improvise my own shock absorber?  Maybe hook up a small tire?  Anyone has tried to create your own boat line shock absorber?

I seem to recall that is the rule, but looking through the Ocean Fishing Regulation I can't find this exact phrase.  Can you help?

General Talk / What to look for in an ocean fishing rod?
« on: May 02, 2023, 01:51:31 PM »
I have not given much thought to fishing rods before; typically I just buy some $40 rod from Walmart and use it until something breaks, then I get another one.

I feel a few of my current rods are too soft -- even when I was bouncing the weight I can see the tip bends a lot. At the other end of the spectrum I see people battling sailfish and their rods barely bend. I'm about to buy another rod and thought maybe this time I get the right gear for the ocean fishing.

Experts talk about fast- medium- slow action but that's seems too general. What specific specs should I be looking for in a rod for ocean fishing - let's say to handle a 15 lb halibut?

General Talk / Registering kayak with DMV for CF number
« on: April 25, 2023, 11:56:11 AM »
Anyone's registered a kayak with DMV?  I am stuck on the very first question.....

The kayak is neither new nor from out of state.  Anyone knows how to handle this?  Also I have no idea about the year it's made.  Can I make one up or leave blank?

Hoping to have no surprises at the DMV.

General Talk / Cheap kayak sale websites that are actually scams
« on: April 21, 2023, 07:38:32 AM »
There are several websites advertising very low prices for new kayaks; they are scams.  I had posted a couple of links in another thread; I won't repost here.

Their price is like $300 for something that is typically $800-900, then when you enter credit card to buy, nothing happens.  In reality, the scammer already harvested the credit card number and attempts to put charges on the card.

Be very careful.

Separate note - Citibank is very good at detecting unusual activities and they stopped all fraudulent charges attempted on my card, while letting my real charges through.  Wells Fargo on the other hand......

General Talk / What paint to use to paint CF numbers on vessels?
« on: April 20, 2023, 10:58:22 AM »
Seems to me painting is the least expensive and most versatile, since I have quite a few to do.  I imagine this job requires pretty strong paint to take the abrasion.

Any recommendation?

Other Kayaks / Is this kayak any good? Help me ID it
« on: April 08, 2023, 06:40:09 PM »
I acquired this kayak almost 20 years ago.  I thought it looked very sleek; but after first use I hated it.  It was hard to get in and out, and as you can see the bottom, it does not track well at all.  Since then it has been sitting around.  It is made of fiberglass.

Can anyone tell me anything about this kayak?  Any brand?  Any known design?

General Talk / Tips about kayak fishing in Monterey area
« on: April 02, 2023, 08:19:37 AM »
I'm getting ready for Monterey.  Will be picking up two 12' kayaks today right in that town (will post pics to my other kayak-length thread as a wrap up for that topic).  A few questions about kayak fishing in Monterey; hope those in the know can share some tips.

1. Can I confirm again that kayak launch at San Carlos beach ("breakwater") is permitted?  I know many say they have launched there, but I also see NOAA launch site page (https://montereybay.noaa.gov/visitor/kayakaccesspts.html) does NOT list that beach as a kayak launch spot so I am a bit weary.  Anyone can confirm this?  This is the beach we always enter water when going for a little dip in Monterey, we know our way around and distance to water is short plus parking is cheap so ideally we want to launch here if permitted.

2. If officially we can launch from San Carlos beach, given the many beach-goers there, is there any restriction or concern on carrying a speargun?  Since I will go farther out from shore with kayak I like to have my gun with me.

3. NOAA list does include Del Monte as a kayak launch spot. I checked the entire stretch of this long beach; it seems the only place with parking is the spot nearest to the harbor, where Monterey Bay Kayaks is located.  Is this the spot to launch if using Del Monte beach?

4. Are these two beaches the most convenient spots to launch to Monterey bay?  Supposedly McCabee and Lovers Point can also launch kayaks; but I can see there could be less parking and more crowd there.

How far do I have to paddle out, or in how deep water, can I start to get some fishing opportunity?  Any particular reefy sections in the bay?  I attached a map with grid if that'll help communicate.

I know people put trolling motors on kayaks; but it is very bulky and clumsy, and hard to handle on water

If there is a model with a motor that is nicely integrated, electric or gas, I really would be interested in such a product...  Why is there no such product yet?

I plan to invite some friends to BBQ and boating this July 4th. I have a plastic Rogue River 14 canoe for guests to use. There will likely be people who are not familiar with boating, probably some are kids too.  To be safe, I am thinking about fitting my canoe with some type of outrigger. A search online for this product reveals that they are from $150 to $400 per package. Problem is they either require drilling into the edge of the hull, which I am not willing to do, or are too elaborate and expensive. I think I may be able to fashion my own outrigger that will not damage the canoe, and in the process save a few bucks too.

I think mainly I need:

1. C clamp about 1 3/4" wide and deep, that clamps on to the edge of the canoe.
2. Connected to the back of the clamp there needs to be a ring or another clamp that can secure a plastic or aluminum tube maybe 1" in diameter.
3. The two ends of the aluminum tube extend out; I will bend them down to water surface then attach some flotation.  If I want to be cheap, pool noodles can do.

This setup may take just $30-50. And plastic tubes I already have at home.

A quick search shows all C clamps with a screw hole on the back have rather small openings, or not deep enough. The bigger C claps don't have screw holes.  I am still searching.

I want to check if anyone has done this before and have worked out a better solution or design?

Is there any minimum size for going into ocean to fish?

Hello fellow fishermen,

New season, new luck! I am looking for some protected waters to take my 16 year old son fishing (just for fun) and practicing boating.  Would be his first time operating a motor boat.  I thought the vast space between Pillar Point's inner jetty and outer jetty is a perfect place for these goals.  I want to make sure all is good.

I have a 12' Seaking aluminum boat, and a Suzuki 2.5 hp outboard.  All rather light stuff.  My plan is to haul the boat on top of my truck rack (as opposed to using the trailer), park at the boat launch lot, carry the boat and motor to the beach where people launch kayaks, launch and motor out to the big open water between the inner and outer jetties on the west side, and do some light fishing there.

Anyone know if this plan will run afoul of any harbor rule?  Or is there any danger in doing this?  Or will I be in someone's way?
