The girlfriend and I headed out at 4:30 on the 2 1/2 hour drive to Anchor Bay to meet up with Adam and Ryan. As soon as I pull up the lady starts demanding I hurry up and pay her. I ask her if it's ok if I check to make sure the water conditions are safe for us first. She replies with "The water conditions were superb yesterday, many people had an excellent time, please provide me with monetary compensation for the use of our facilities. Please do not cause me anymore problems." It seems oddly rude but it's early so I apologize and tell her I didn't mean to cause any problems. She again tells me to hurry and not sit down there drinking beer. (It's 7 am???) She starts trash talking Ryan and Adam and says we can't go down to unload until they move. She then takes off to tell them to hurry up.

I head down to unload. She's standing there watching and tells me to hurry up again. I take 5 steps over to make sure the water is even dividable before unloading the kayaks and all the gear and she follows me and says "The water is flat, unload NOW and go." I tell her I need to check for myself. She replies that I'm no longer welcome and tells me to leave. Okaaaaaay. Sorry camp Nazi, you got it. I'll never spend a dollar here again. FYI the breakers were too big for my girlfriend who's new to ocean kayaking to safely launch in.

After leaving I get a text from Ryan that her methed out henchman called the sheriff on me to report me as driving drunk. Hahahahaha unreal...long drive for this extremely rude lady to ruin my day.... I wrote the experience up on their page reviews, but of course it was immediately deleted and I was blocked from the page ;D

Luckily I gave DG a ring and he was going out. Shot Kathy a text and she headed down to Albion too. Duane, Dan, Dan 2, Kathy, and the girlfriend and I headed out and found 35'-40' vis!!!

Me and Duane parked in 45/50' and did a dozen or so drops looking for vermillion. No luck, but found at least one ling on every drop. One drop 3 were swimming up to me. At 50' this stupid ling swims up to me, and I push him away with my gun. He doesn't get the hint and swims back at me so I popped him.

Went in a bit shallower and my girlfriend shot her first limit of lings while I was off getting skunked hahaha...... Kathy shot a nice ling and a cab.

Great day with amazing conditions. Glad it turned around from that nightmare experience of being treated like trash for no reason.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Shimano Tekota LC issue
« on: December 10, 2017, 08:04:27 PM »
Reel is about 6 months old and the LC is stuck. Shimano said I can pay to ship it to them, and if it doesn’t have any rust or corrosion they’ll fix it.

Anyone had theirs go out? Is it any easy fix?

My girlfriend just got her first free diving suit and fins in the mail and wanted to give spearing a try. We headed to Russian Gulch and launched and immediately saw crystal clear water from the shore break out to the middle of the cove. As we paddled out I could see the bottom from the kayak at 30'.

Halfway to the spot DFG pulls up and shakes us down.

One is very cool and talks about diving, recommending a nearby spot he says are loaded with scallops. After a quick hull search all is fine.

We pull up to the spot and hop in, crystal clear for over 30'. I found a nice scallop at 25' and show her what they look like, but am unable to get it off. Within 10 minutes she shoots a 15 pound ling hiding under a ledge in 20'. Not bad for her first fish ever taken on spear, and biggest ling ever taken period.

I swim out and do a few drops at 35'. On the third one a small looking ling turn and heads right for me. He looks not worth shooting so I don't fire. As he gets closer and closer, finally almost touching my the end of my gun, I see he's worth a shot and stone him.

We decide to move on for her to try kayak fishing, and me to do some deeper drops for reds. As she's practicing reloading the spear into the gun to put it up, (I get easily bored) I drop my line off the side between the two kayaks. Almost immediately I hook into another 30"+ ling.

She goes off trying to hook more fish, and I hop in and do a few drops at 50'. I see a bunch of tiny blues, but no reds. As I come up I see my kayak capsized, with my fish finder upside down soaking and all my gear falling to the bottom. The anchor pulled loose, and it went off into deeper water before snagging on something straight down from it, and the swell flipped it. After some fetching everything accounted for.

I find this cool little hole in the reef with around 15 scallops and take the 5 bigger ones.

She has no luck fishing, and for some reason my 6 month old Shimano reel line counter is not working.

Awesome day with incredible conditions!

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Missed world record cab
« on: October 05, 2017, 08:49:11 PM »
Went out for a dive today with Jason and Michael. Had some great water with 1-2' swell, and 25-30' vis. Dropped down and shot a small ling right off the bat. Jason shot a couple cabs. We moved in to some shallower water where the vis was better. I took a drop right under my buddies kayak in 25' and saw a nice big smile under a rock. Popped it and pulled up a 25" cab.

Got back to shore and weighed it in. I was pretty stoked it was the new pole spear world record I had been eying for quite some time. More like years...and years. I check the records to go submit it and see someone beat me to it 2 weeks ago. :smt044 Years of getting close and when I finally get it I miss it by 2 WEEKS! Hahaha oh well. We had a great day on the water.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / NCUH Baja Spearfishing trip.
« on: September 21, 2017, 02:18:27 PM »
The final count was something like 12-15 NorCal spearos. The spearing was tough and the weather was less than cooperative. We still managed to have a good time and shoot some stuff.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / A month in Baja so far
« on: August 29, 2017, 02:57:36 PM »
After a grueling 30+ hour drive with no more than a 15 minute rest break we arrived to the rental house in Los Barriles

Got so much needed sleep. Picked up Ryan G and his girlfriend the next day and hit the reef. The water was a blistering 88 degrees and too hot for suits.

Went and picked up Jason O, Jack J and his fiancee from the airport. Got a call from Hobie that him and his friend were in town so they came out for a few drinks.

We hired a pangero and went out for some Bluewater. The morning started off with dropping down to about 50' and seeing a huge school of skipjack with a couple yellowfin mixed in. Jason dropped down later and shot a nice pargo.

Didn't see much the rest of the day. As we were out of time I asked Ryan and Jason to do a drop so I could get some video. As the three of us are breathing up, a dorado suddenly appears right off Ryans fin, and Jason snaps around and lands a shot.

We went home and made some mahi mahi tacos and skipjack poke. Wasn't too bad.

A brief storm rolled through and Ryan snapped a great shot.

Did a couple more panga trips and shore dives. Spearing is rough. Out of all of us there were maybe three wahoo sightings the whole 2 weeks so far, along with a couple roosters.

After nearly two weeks I finally had 4 nice roosters swim by me. Unfortunately I just set down my 150 and picked up my 82 with one band half loaded. I managed to hit one but there was zero penetration.

Dropped off the gang at the airport and went out for some shore dives with Joe M and his neighbor. Found a couple lobsters.

Had some stuff going and, and a hurricane was blowing in so yesterday I flew back home for a week. Heading back down to meet a new group to go out for more blue water with Colin Sutton, finish the trip and drive home.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Big ab/spearfishing trip
« on: July 15, 2017, 04:45:23 PM »
Me and Jason took a road trip up north to dive some new areas. We stayed for 5 days paddling and scouting brand new completely unfamiliar territory. I ended up with two 10.5s and Jason pulled an 11" ab and found a massive 11.4" shell. We shot some nice blacks, but the lings seemed very few and far between. Incredible structure and caves, but all empty.

We took a break halfway through and did a BASE jump off a beautiful bridge, landing on a beach near the water with the sun setting.

11" gauge on the ab

I saw a video last season of an abalone diver nearly dying while attempting to go out without any safety knowledge.  I sent him a message about going out for a dive, and we finally managed to get out and pull some abs. Focusing on safety and very beginner stuff to hopefully stop anyone from getting hurt or killed. If you guys don't already follow his channel check him out, lots of good fishing stuff, although it's mostly all from shore.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / First bluefin tuna hunt
« on: June 09, 2017, 08:58:35 PM »
On Monday I got a message from a friend saying the tuna are in and I should head south. Within 15 minutes I threw my stuff in the car and was on my way.

I got in around 3 am, caught 3 hours of sleep before waking up to get the boat ready and head out. Tuna hunting was completely different from any type of diving I've done before. 99% of the day was spent on the back of the boat completely geared up ready to hop in while one person drove around and the other person spotted with binoculars. Pull up to a bait spot, bail out, and immediately punch a 40' dive with no breath up.

Several times we thought we had a good spot and dropped in, but we didn't see anything the whole day. Towards the end of the first day we stopped at a paddy where one guy shot a nice 30# YT.

We got in around 2 am, caught a few hours of sleep and woke up again to repeat. After another long day of diving into blue seeing nothing, I thought the trip was over with no sightings. Then finally I do a drop, and look over my should to see a massive school of 100+ pound bluefin tuna swimming by. I've never seen a fish that big in the water, and just like expected I sucked at estimating range. I took aim leading a bit and pulled the trigger on what felt like a sure thing with no chance of missing. I swear I felt like I could reach out and touch the fish. My shaft smacked the side of it, it spiraled up, and then I watched my shaft sink to the bottom. I came up tunaless, but with the biggest smile on my face laughing.

We stopped at one last paddy on the way back in and I popped a 37# YT.

Thanks Red Triangle for the awesome trip I will always remember!

General Talk / Anyone interested in coming to Baja in Aug/Sept?
« on: June 05, 2017, 09:58:09 AM »
I just booked this place in Los Barriles from August 15-September 30. I'm hoping to find a few groups of divers/kayak fisherman that would like to come down and can kick down $60/night to help with the cost. I will have my vehicle down there and 1-2 kayaks. I can pick up 1-4 from Cabo san Lucas airport 1 1/2 hour away. Colin Sutton will be there in early September and I plan on at least a couple days with him, so if you're interested in a charter we can try and get on the same one. Booking sooner than later is obviously the best way to get cheap airfare, and right now I'm seeing round trip tickets for as low as $340

General Fishing Tips / Pacific halibut from a kayak
« on: May 30, 2017, 03:52:46 PM »
It's one thing to sink a spear into a 100-200 pound fish when you have a breakaway with floats.

Can a fish that large be safely landed in a kayak? I've been wondering what I'm in for if I actually manage to hook into a pacific halibut with a rod and reel in Alaska. Am I going to die?  :smt044

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Jackson Kraken FF mount?
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:03:07 PM »
I'm getting my new Kraken in the mail (thanks for the support with the upcoming trip Jackson!) with only a day or two before departure to get it all rigged up. Is there a simple plug and play attachment to get my Hook 5 in it quick and easy? I think I saw a lot of them mounted on an attachment in the center.

Links to what I need would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

General Fishing Tips / Tackle for Alaska/Baja
« on: May 14, 2017, 07:15:37 PM »
Yeah, I'm a terrible kayak rod fisherman. There I said it. I've basically only ever tied on hex bars and bounced them off the bottom for ling.

Besides an assortment of those, what should I get for Alaska and Baja? Is there anything besides live bait to go after salmon and halibut with? I don't think I'll do much rod fishing in Baja, but if theres a cheap assortment I can get I'd rather have it and not use it than wish I had it. Thanks.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Shimano rod and reel question.
« on: May 13, 2017, 04:12:13 PM »
Stupid question but I'm not sure I have his right. Just bought a shimano rod and tekota 500 LC reel. Are they all right handed? If the line counter is facing up, the logo is upside down. And it only attaches where the eyelets are on top of the rod not underneath. Is this right?
