General Fishing Tips / HMB Crab Newb
« on: November 24, 2017, 10:03:20 AM »
Hey everyone, after getting pretty much skunked at on the crab opener at Bodega, I'm looking to potentially try crabbing at HMB for the first time.

Does anybody have any baseline tips they can share in terms of where to launch, where to drop traps, etc? Are there crabs inside the jaws or do you have to go out further than that? I've never been to HMB before but I've seen the positive crabbing reports lately so I think it's time. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Once you get a little bit back every creek and river is oaded with trout and they will bite anything. I brought a couple flies with a few feet of line and just hand tossed them in. A fish almost every throw.

^ Either he's talking about 1987 or this guy is much better at fishing than I am. I was just there fishing the Merced for 2 days and couldn't catch anything. I saw plenty of fish, but couldn't get any of them to accept my dinner invitations.

Sorry for the confusion, but I'm not referring to bait fish. I'm talking about sizable fish feeding on the surface. Bait fish were jumping all around, and large fish were crushing them...

I've never seen anything like it, and I want to go out again tomorrow night to try to take advantage.

As I've pointed out in previous posts, I'm pretty new to kayak fishing (and fishing in general) - so with that in mind, here's a question:

I decided to try for some stripers tonight in Sausalito (houseboat area), and on my way back in after an hour or so of nothingness, the fish started to go nuts all around me (I'm assuming they were stripers, but I could of course be wrong). First it was 100 feet ahead of me, so I rushed up and started chucking my lure at them... then they were 200 feet behind me, so I turned around and chucked my lure at them again... The action was fast and furious, but I managed a single bite and not much else...

When these fish start to go nuts, what should I do to increase my chances? I'm assuming topwater baits (poppers?) are the way to go, but beyond that I have no strategy and I definitely missed a golden opportunity tonight. Is there a strategy to approach these guys?

^ definitely nice, but far more boat than we'll need.

Maybe some more info would be helpful: probably 80% of the time it will be used for pretty casual lake fishing, and we car top so something pretty light and easily transportable would be ideal.

I'm looking to upgrade and wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good fishing tandem?

I know a tandem isn't really ideal/efficient in many ways, but the wife loves it and it suits us well. We currently have a Hobie Kona which is incredibly stable (a big factor for us), but it's a little short and not very fast or maneuverable so I don't love taking it into the salt.

Any suggestions?

It's pretty smoky, but not bad enough to chase us away.

Great advice threemoneyj, thank you!

I'm here right now camping at Miti Campground and will be fishing around here tomorrow. I tried a little shore fishing when we first got here and pulled out an 18" largemouth pretty quickly on a swimbait. I'm extremely new to bass fishing and that happens to be my personal best, so i have high hopes for the rest of the weekend. If you're around tomorrow I'd love to tag along and try to learn a few things. I'm here with my girlfriend on a blue tandem if you see us.

Awesome, thank you. I did a search before posting but I don't think that thread showed up because it only says "Mendo". Some good info there for sure.

Planning on taking the kayak to Lake Mendocino this weekend but I've never been there and don't know much about what to expect or what species to target this time of year. Anybody have any intel or tips?

I decided to give it a shot this afternoon, and rockfish felt like it would be a good saltwater cherry-popper so I headed to a nearby jetty. I don't have much saltwater gear so I rigged up a swimbait that I had found on the rocks at some point, and after 45 minutes or so of low confidence trial-and-error, I managed to hook into my first saltwater fish (by hook and line) - a nice lingcod! About 21.997 inches long. It was right on the edge of legal so I played it safe and let it go. Needless to say I'm hooked.

What you are already doing (poke poling) is probably the most productive method of saltwater fishing from shore in Norcal. A bunch of people on this forum chase surf perch, so there are plenty of posts that have all the details on how to do that.

Being on a kayak makes catching fish in the ocean so much easier though. You can spend all day casting from the rocky shore for a few small rockfish, or you can fish a quarter mile offshore from the same spot in your kayak and come home with a 30 pound stringer.

Fishing from the shore is a lot less of a hassle though.

You really should buy Kirk's book if you haven't already: https://www.amazon.com/Foragers-Guide-Northern-California-Coast/dp/159714357X

I actually have a copy of the book beside me as we speak, and I'm on my 2nd reading. Awesome stuff - KillBait, you won't be disappointed.

I hear you about the benefits of the kayak, so I'll keep that in mind. The big thing for me (aside from still trying to learn about tides/current/wind/etc) is that I don't have the recommended safety equipment, and I likely won't be living here for long enough to warrant buying it. We'll see though.

I'll search around for some more info on surf-perching, and I'll definitely stick with the poke-poling as well (just had some monkey-face tacos tonight and they were amazing as usual)

Thanks to you and the others who have posted so far for the words of wisdom.

Hey everyone,

I've learned a lot from this forum about crabbing and freshwater kayak fishing, but I've yet to do any saltwater fishing (outside of poke-poling, which I also learned about here (and love)).

I'm looking to leave the kayak at home for a while (for safety purposes) and start to get comfortable with some saltwater fishing. Any tips on a good introductory species or method? Obviously I'd love to start hauling in trophy salmon and halibut, but I imagine something like perch, stripers or rockfish would be more appropriate for a beginner, yes?

I wont ask you to give away your favorite spots, but generally speaking what would you recommend as an introduction to the salt? Species? Location (beach/pier/rocky shore)? Rig? Bait? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks guys. Is there a good resource for newbies that might help me distill these things into 'good/bad'?
