Hi All,

Bought my first yak last fall (jackson cuda) -- I'm primarily a fly fisherman, and have found the yak to be an outstanding way to fish for stripers on the Bay.

But alas, fly fishing is not generally a great way to catch salmon. It's time for me to learn some new tricks -- like what exactly is mooching and how do you do it? And, when, where, how does one fish for salmon? Trolling vs mooching? What gear (I have a fair amount of conventional gear).

Anyway, I live in San Rafael, and would love to find someone with the time/interest/patience who'd be willing to educate me in the ways of Salmon fishing along the Marin coast.

Thanks!

John

You could also check out the Jackson Cuda 14. It's not quite as roomy as a PA, but it has a super comfy seat designed to let you sit up a bit higher. It also doesn't weigh or cost nearly as much.

Ugh, sounds like I will need to bite the bullet. Will the Wheeleez mini do the trick, I found one for $119.

Thanks.

Wondering what most folks do when they need to move their kayak across a beach/sand. I'd love to just buy a beach cart, but they're damn expensive — are there any cheaper alternatives? I don't really want to drag my yak across 150+ yards of sand...

Thanks.

Crabbing here was slow in general but it's "perfect" weather wise.  I enjoyed spending time camping with friends and OTW.  We ate delicious BBQed crabs for dinner and crab omelet for breakfast.  Hope the crabbing there will improve next week.  Here are some pictures of the trip...

Wait... Is it common to BBQ crabs? I've often thought about trying it, but couldn't find anything via Google so assumed it was not doable. Looks like you just tossed 'em on the coals -- any reason I couldn't cook them on a charcoal grill?

Just noticed something cool -- I was studying the SteveS's post from a few years ago regarding the Marin Islands (thank you SteveS!). Decided to look at Google Maps to get a better look (first photo). Then zoomed-in to get a close look (second photo) and to my surprise, there's a kayak parked just off the East island fishing the NW ridge. Damn! That's pretty cool!

Wow! I wasn't sure how active this forum was — but man, what a great resource.

Throwing flies seems really similar to lures (I think). I'm no snob, just happen to have been born with a fly rod in my hand.

Toygoata, that info you provided is really killer. And it's super interesting reading it in light of the three excursions I've made so far. I'd never been out to the islands before, but it seems like I managed to put myself in pretty much the right areas. I had one solid strike on the outgoing at the NW rip.

I'm gonna be out there this weekend at some point — just waiting to see which day I can get a hall pass.

One question about this forum, does one just reply at the bottom of a string/page, or can you reply to specific posts?

Thanks all! Really psyched to meet some of you out on the water!

John

Hi All,

Newby here — well, I've been fly fishing for 35 years, but just bought a Jackson Cuda, and this is my first post on NCKA...

I've been out to the Marin Islands a couple of times the last two weeks, really awesome to be out there, but the only stripe I saw was the skunk.

Anyone else been out in the SR area recently? Very open to any and all advice as this is a new twist for me.

Thanks.
