Kayaks / Re: Hobie Pro Angler
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:56:45 AM »
only one place within an hour's drive had a PA in stock, so I went to Livermore Friday and picked it up.  the kid that loaded it on my Jeep trailer insisted on strapping it down upside down and only a few inches from my 09 Tacoma's tailgate.  first driveway I went through it dented my tailgate and scraped the paint on my Snugtop lid.  I should have listened to my instincts and tied it down right side up!
it is the Moss color, would have prefered the yellow for more visibility.
took it to Upper Blue Lakes off of highway 88 yesterday, beautiful day!  got smokey from the fire around noon and started clouding up and sprinkles were starting so we headed in at a fast clip.  the water was choppy and with the clouds I did not see the boulder until we were right on top of it.  bent both masts and tore one fin on the drive.  I think I can straighten the masts and have a pair of fins ordered.   :smt013
the PA is super stable!  my son was in a Hobie Sport and in a race I could just start to pull away from him.
the only thing I don't like about the PA is the weight!  on the water you don't notice the weight and with the turbo fins it pedals easily.  the seat is super comfortable!  lots of storage room for gear and the "ice chest" in the bow is the cat's meow!  I am 6'3" and 205 lbs., plenty of room to stretch out, had the pedals set at #7.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Thule "Hull A Port"
« on: July 31, 2009, 08:37:25 PM »
I bought two sets of the Hull A Ports for two Hobie kayaks and when I tried to put the Hobies on them I realized they are not big enough, especially for my Pro Angler.  it is 38" wide.  ended up stacking a Hobie Sport on top of the PA on racks on my Jeep trailer.

just bought a PA from Adventure Sports in Livermore.  got a decent deal I thought. that thing is HEAVY!  going to try it out at a Sierra Lake on highway 88 tomorrow.
it is the olive color, wanted a brighter color so I would be seen easier while on the water.  Sierra Sports were the only place that had one in stock within an hour's drive from me.

UPDATE:
tried it at Upper Blue Lakes off highway 88 Saturday. super stable and super comfortable!  very easy to pedal, as per the GPS we went a little over 4 miles.  I raced my son who was in a Hobie Sport and I could just start to pull away from him.  the only thing I don't like so far is the weight when trying to load it and move it around off the water.
it was starting to sprinkle when we were on the water and the wind picked up  (10 to 15 MPH wind did not bother the PA at all)  so we pedaled in at a brisk pace.  the water was choppy plus with the overcast I could not see the huge boulder until I was right on top of it.  ended up bending both masts and ripping one ST Turbo fin.
the rudder is very sensitive, you have to make course corrections all the time but I have gotten used to it.  can't wait to get the drive repaired and hit the water again!   :smt003

I've got one. But I only use it when transporting 2 kayaks.
Unfortunately, I also know of 2 instances where the Thule Hullaport racks broke.

more info please............
is there anything better out there? especially for heavy Hobie pedal yaks

Steve, what kind of prices did they qoute you at CCK in Rancho?  I too am trying to decide between a new and used Hobie.  so far I have tried an Outback and Sport.  did not like the Sport at all!  too tippy and tiring to pedal.  my son and I pedaled for 9 miles at a high elevation lake and I was not tired afterwards.  very easy to cruise at 2 mph.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Silver & Caples
« on: July 25, 2009, 06:50:35 PM »
Didint they drain Caples lake last year? Are there still fish in there?

they did several fish rescues and moved a lot of fish to Silver and Red Lakes last fall.  they were not able to catch many macks because they are deeper water fish and the DFG shock boats could not reach them.  I caught a lot of decent macks, browns, rainbows, and brooks last fall after the fish rescues, just about every trip I had a limit with the above mentioned species of trout.  a good majority of the fish made it through the winter and there are some big fish in that lake still.  they just stocked it several weeks ago with some brood stock and you can see them swimming near the shore often.  these are 10+ lb. bruisers!  finding a place to park can be a major pain on the weekends.  Caples Lake Resort charges 10.00 to launch your yak and park your vehicle in their lot.  Silver Lake is free to park your vehicle and launch your yak.  Caples is 20.00 to launch a power boat and park.  Silver is 10.00 to launch a power boat and park.  they are building a public boat ramp/launch on the east side of Caples lake.  projected opening is september of 09 the last time I heard.
my son and I were on Silver lake last weekend when it was 100+ degrees in the valley it was a very pleasant 80 at Silver Lake.  I trolled for a bit and only caught one small brown that was a bleeder so I kept it.

I did read a couple of threads about the PA but no one seems to own one?  maybe because most of the people here are more salt oriented?

Kayaks / Hobie Pro Angler
« on: July 24, 2009, 08:46:08 AM »
Hi Everyone,
newbie here...........I want to get a Hobie pedal yak. due to two torn rotater cuffs a paddle yak is out of the question.  I have tried a Hobie Outback and Hobie Sport at Silver Lake on highway 88 a week ago.  my son and I switched the yaks back and forth and I did not like the sport model, it seemed too cramped and harder to pedal than the outback.  the outback seemed more stable to me.  there was a 10 mph wind with maybe a 1' chop.  the outback handled the wind and chop with no problems other than an occasional spray over the bow.  per the GPS we pedaled 9 miles that day and except for a bad sunburn we were not all that tired even at the 7200' elevation.  I am going to try the Hobie pro angler soon, my only concern with the PA will be the weight especially if I am by myself.
I will be transporting the yaks on a 1/4 ton Bantam "Jeep" trailer so no problem with lifting the yaks to the roof of a vehicle.  my only concern about the jeep trailer is that the bed is only 6' long so I might have a bunch of yak hanging out the back end of it.  I was planning on using the Thule "Hull a port" for each yak.
I am 6'3" and 205 lbs.  I have fished for years mostly in the high sierra lakes along highway 88 (Silver, Red, Caples, Upper and Lower Blue, etc.)  and foothill lakes.  I would be using the Hobie at the high elevation lakes that don't allow gas motors.  I presently fish out of a 15' Gregor aluminum boat.
any advice anyone?  does anyone here have a Pro Angler?  will any of the shops offer a discount for NCKA members?  all of the hobies are expensive but seem to hold their value.
