Craftsmen's Corner / Hobie Fishfinder Battery Upgrade
« on: August 29, 2019, 08:34:19 AM »
It was time to replace the battery after noticing I was only getting 3 hours of use out of my 12V 9AH Gel Cell battery that came with my Hobie Fishfinder Kit. On a full charge the voltage topped off at 12.1V! The thing about these battery’s is that they don’t like to be discharged and my Lowrance Elite 5 TI drew 1.2A, virtually damaging the cells by running them dry on every outing.

The solution: Buy a bigger battery! But the downside is you would have to carry the additional weight. So even better, buy a Lithium Iron Phosphate “LiFePO4.” Not only lighter but they don’t mind being completely discharged!

Time to salvage the cover and connector using a flat blade:

Great job Hobie! :smt011

Now let’s clean up those wires and remove the plastic covers so we can use them on the new battery:

Use a good flexible glue for the connectors and let’s fill up those covers:

Make sure the opening is completely sealed off to prevent corrosion and then clean off any excess:

Finally let the glue dry for 24hrs and install in the existing Hobie tray.

I opted for the 12AH to give myself ample time to enjoy using my Fishfinder. It’s wider so it won’t snap into place but nothing a bungee cord can’t fix.

Another added benefit is that lithium battery’s can be mounted on its side if you want to avoid the wires being pulled by the battery tray:

Here are the specs from the battery app and the voltage from the Fishfinder:

This lithium battery cost $79.00 and works with the existing Hobie charger. At the price of just $9 more than the Hobie replacement battery and a 5 year warranty, it was a no brainer. I hope this helps anyone out there looking to replace or upgrade their existing Hobie battery kit. :smt006

Introductions / New"ish" Member- Vallejo
« on: January 11, 2019, 12:17:36 PM »
Well, this is 4 years past due. Born and raised in Vallejo, I've fished since I can remember but I'm still fresh to the kayak scene. I use to own a Tarpon 140 but then sold it for my Gregor to take my buddy's out fishing with me. 4 years later and now I finally got the kayak I always wanted. Safety was first on my list so I picked up the appropriate attire and equipment, just waiting for some good weather to help get rid of this itch. Looking forward to meeting some of you on the water. LETS GO SLAY SOME FISH!

General Fishing Tips / ABU Garcia Veritas 2.0 Top Section
« on: August 06, 2015, 09:23:21 AM »
Hey guys,

So I recently lost the top section of my Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 rod while out on the water. Damn thing went overboard and went straight to depths of Davey Jones' Locker :smt011. I called ABU and put in a claim and within a week, I received a whole new rod :smt007. Now here is my dilemma:

What do I do with the bottom section of my older rod?
I tried calling Abu to purchase a new top section but they said that they don't carry spare sections of the rod to try to match them. They referred me to Jann's Netcraft and Mudhole but had no luck with them either. Would hate to just have to use it as a nice looking Beatstick. :smt044
Any Suggestions?

For Sale / WTB Hobie Adventure/Tandem Island
« on: November 20, 2014, 01:36:30 AM »
Hey everyone!

So i'm looking into getting a Hobie Adventure or Tandem Island, Preferably used. I enjoy fishing alone from my kayak but a tandem sounds tempting because i'll be able to share the experience with friends and family, since they love fishing as well. I can pick up just about anywhere in the Bay Area. Thanks :smt003

Hey Guys,
This past Sunday I fished out of Berkeley and on my way back I was asked a few questions by the Wildlife Fish and Game to check my catch. After an hour discussing unrelated topics :smt002 she eventually gave me her Fish and Game jacket and was cool with me assisting her with checking other boats for data. Very beneficial because I immediately knew where everyone was hooking up. Striper and Halibut was extremely slow in the Bay except for 4 Leopard Sharks ranging between 40-50 inches. All the action seems to be out of the gates from Bonita Cove to Duxbery Reef. Lingcods all above 30 inches and 4 salmon off of duxbery reef in 50ft of water.

Seeing that the action is out there, i'm looking into leaving tomorrow in the morning from either Fort Baker to Bonita Cove or Bolinas Bay to Duxbury Reef. If anyone if heading out there tomorrow, or would like to, let me know. It would be my first time out in the are and would definitely like some company to help navigate the trip.

Introductions / New to the game, coming from Vallejo
« on: May 24, 2014, 01:58:22 AM »
Hey guys!
So I recently suffered an ACL tear playing competitive soccer and had to take some time off. Since fishing is my second passion, I picked up a kayak 2 month ago and began to go to work. I picked up a Tarpon 140 and began with a stern mounted trolling motor installation, along with a live baitwell. Don't get me wrong, I understand that kayaking is meant to be manually paddled,  but after a rough experience in the bay and the amount of ground I would like to cover halibut fishing, I saw it more of a necessity. Don't know whats going on with Berkley, but apparently they're not selling live anchovies anymore, which is a bummer. Other than that, i'm really loving the hobbie and i'm looking foward to coming across a few of you who have had great experiences in the water on your yak. So far i've experienced Berkley flats for halibut fishing and Santa Cruz for some awesome Ling Cod action.
I should be close to finishing my Yak in about a week and graduating from college next month, after that I should be out on the water a little more often trying to hopefully cross off the last fish on my list (Halibut) :smt003 while still waiting on the healing process to finally go back to playing the sport I love most.
