I’ve been out of the loop so sorry if this question is out of sync.
I know that the 20 fathom limitation is much better than 50 fathom, but still that’s 120FOW. Most of the rock fishing we do is around 30-90 max. For folks like me (bay area) it means a lot of driving (and paddling) to get to legal fishing depths. What am I missing? 3
General Fishing Tips / Re: best place for beginning kayaker to fish the ocean« on: March 01, 2024, 08:40:13 PM »
Good advice from everyone.
I would add a few things: - get minimal gear, make sure it’s secure. This will give you peace of mind in case you flip, which is actually good, since it’s part of training - go with someone if possible, or to a beach with people. There’s safety in numbers - bays are good, except for The Bay, which is not a beginner place if tides and other things go wrong - do your safety research. The number one cause of deaths is hypothermia. There’s no replacement for prep And after a few outings remember that good seas don’t make good sailors. 4

It’s amazing how one little good thing can make you forget years of hard work.Kind of like how one fish can make you forget all the skunks..

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak loading on tailgate spoiler« on: February 11, 2024, 09:47:05 PM »Thanks for the warning !Thanks y’all. Good advice here as usual.Dont do it, use something like Thule Outrigger or Rhino Rack Universal Load Assist. I used to do exactly that with my Revo 16 with suction cup device ...... you want something that wont fail ....... just take my word for it. The problem with the Revo 16 is that it is so damn long ..... but when you glide in the water, you forget all the loading issues 7
General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak loading on tailgate spoiler« on: February 05, 2024, 09:03:46 PM »I do have an older Yakima round rack, and a Thule square rack. They both have loading bars that extend to the side for loading. The mounting clips would need to be changed for your vehicle if available. Free Thanks! A friend told me he uses the same trick as Alex, except with a piece of old carpet on the spoiler to protect it, and allow the kayak to slide better. No T-bar. But he has a Highlander, and Honda is known to have a lighter build compared to Toyota, so I’ll have to see. 8

I was wondering how long it would be before a DIY PVC solution appears
But yeah - that’s the most solid design. As for the Codinter, I had one in the past, and indeed the kayak either gets out of alignment or the suction cups come off. But both can be avoided with practice and a clean surface 9

Thanks y’all. Good advice here as usual.
I will give the Codinter device a try since it’s the simplest option. My Odyssey doesn’t have rails or hatch, so first order of business would be to install the rails and crossbars. I’ll report when I make progress 10

I want to take my Revo 16 on my Honda Odyssey, and need advice on how to load it.
I’m worried that if I lean the kayak on the plastic spoiler at the top of the tailgate, then the spoiler will break. Another thing is that when the tailgate opens, it’ll probably hit the kayak. Not sure if there’s anything that can be done about that. Just be careful not to open it when the kayak is on. 11

+1 to what everyone said.
Good gear is expensive. My advice is buy once, cry once 12
CA Regulations / Re: 2024 Season Article« on: January 23, 2024, 08:28:14 AM »
Very good read.
It’s interesting that now the DFW is changing tone based on Quilback habitat; as if it wasn’t known before. “The plan is being set up to close all but the deepest waters (over 300 feet) at the start of the season. Then all deep waters will be closed, and fishing will only be allowed near shore, or up to 120 feet. The theory is that both the deep and shallow fishing zones will miss most of the quillback, which tend to live at mid-levels.” 13

If it’s the weekend of the 27th, then I might be able to show up! Any details on the event? Things to bring?
