Recipes / George Foreman Herring(fresh)
« on: January 22, 2023, 03:05:51 PM »
After cleaning, the fish were liberally salted in a large mixing bowl. Placed the fish in ziploc overnight in fridge.

Removed from fridge. Rinsed and pat dry. Placed fish to be eaten in a dish uncovered back in fridge to dry age. Decided to try some after 3 days.

Mini-George Foreman grill for maybe 5-7 min. till lightly browned and crispy skin.

Eaten fresh hot off the grill with rice... sooo good  :smt006

No issues for me if eating the pin bones when thoroughly cooked.
The George Foreman seems to compress sear the flesh and easy clean up with a wet paper towel.

General Talk / Vehicle donation
« on: April 12, 2022, 10:51:19 AM »
Looking at donating a used vehicle that I think would be good with a little work. Any recommendations on a reputable place? Ideally something that helps Veterans would be preferable. Located in Marin.

Thanks

Pulled these out of the water and some of em are quite mangled. Tears and missing brail lines etc. I think all of them have the weights intact. If I remember correctly all the main pull lines are gone.

5ft. clear net w/ blue collar 1/2" mesh
6ft.(2) blue 1/2"mesh
4ft. 3/8"mesh
5ft. nylon super spreader 3/8"?
7ft. betts green collar3/8"

Total of 6 nets I think. These are approximate descriptions from awhile back. Located in Marin

EDIT: NETS GONE!

Craftsmen's Corner / Merino wool salvage
« on: January 03, 2022, 09:36:28 PM »
Been using merino as a base layer and layering for quite some time. Works great but the material can be somewhat delicate and they're quite pricey.

Finally got around to repairing/patching some holes to prevent further tearing and such. On one of the bottoms, the rear had torn from waist to crotch and although the gaping exposed rear could be viewed as a ventilation point, sometimes when donning, my foot would just go right through. Other times, my toes would get caught in one of the holes and tear and such.

Just repaired, so don't know how well they'll hold, but seems solid...

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Surface rust on gaff
« on: September 09, 2021, 02:33:28 PM »
My gaff has light surface rust that I sanded off and it just returned after a single outing or so. Is there a solution to stop this. My primary concern is contamination if that should be an issue..

Or maybe it is patina? It is smooth to the touch/nail rub. Doesn't rub off with vinegar. I have no idea what kind of metal the gaff is made from. I did let it soak w/ a coating of magica rust remover for a couple hours.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / wheeleze strapping
« on: February 04, 2021, 06:31:28 PM »
Finally got around to some maintenance on the cart and took some pics.

Some carts I assume already have straps attached, but mine didn't so I zip tied on some dog harness/collars from the dollar store. Straps can adjust for kayak width. Seems to work out decently so far. Metal D-rings rusted so were replaced with zip ties.

Also, lightly sanded the axels and applied some silicone lube.. hopefully the wheels won't stick while so much for a bit during removal for hull storage.

Introductions / Back into kayak fishing times
« on: July 31, 2020, 05:58:58 PM »
Trip 1: Limit of rockfish at the fort. Easy peasy, fine day.

Trip 2: Bolinas, one hali.

Trip 3: Muir skunked 8 hours on the water, not a single nibble. Launch/landing was cool :) > A plethora of beachgoers, a couple gave me kudos at being their entertainment for the day... I wondered if they saw me taking a leak out the drysuit.

Trip 4: My humbling and harrowing tale. Not having exercised much in the past few months and feeling out of shape, I decided to give a go for some water time therapy and fish. Said my prayers.  No swell and light to moderate winds. Made it out near the dux reef and where the boaters were fishing. Drift was pretty fast but got some rockfish and a couple good unseen fish-on that came unbuttoned.

Wind was picking up and I had just recently gotten the good hits, so I thought one more drift... drifted a little past the south end of stinson. Oh boy, the paddle back was kinda rough.  After about 30 minutes? I was noticing little to no forward movement progress. Anxiety was creeping and whitecaps had formed, I could feel the bonks coming on, and sciatica was flaring. I thought about a quote I had learned in back rehab therapy -once you think you're done, you can go further. Well, shortly thereafter I said no way and went in to land at the southerly end of the beach.  Unbent the back, had a stoge, and ate and orange on provided lawn chairs. Call an uber? The shame.

Looked at my watch, and sundown would be in like an 1-1/2 hour. Crap better get moving. Relaunched and the wind had died down.  Still a steady into the wind and my body was feeling it hard.  Thought about triathaloners, 13 hours benghazi, mariners of old, and the good Lord Almighty. Land ho! Arrived back at the launch shortly before sundown. Thank you Jesus!

:smt003 Kayak fishing is bombdiggity.  Be safe out there!
