Anyone heading out in the Lost Coast this weekend for Salmon or rockfish. I would like to join you and get my feet wet for the first time. Thanks, David

Sunday's forecast looks pretty nice - I'd like to get out there for a few hours of trolling for a salmon.   :smt001

Perhaps I could head up to Trindad on Saturday and just rockfish, but I hear finding the fish in that area is not easy. And then go out for salmon Sunday. That would be a great trip!

My advice, Dave, is to run herring or nice sized chovies near the bottom with a barbless mooching rig a few feet below a 4-6 ounce banana weight.  Try the area about 1/4 to 1/2 mile south of Flat Iron Rock.  You can also troll from there out past the buoy into 120 - 140' of water (that's about 3 miles off the Head though - only on a calm day).  You can catch rockies and lingcod doing that, and you'll have your salmon chance too.

Did I mention that fighting a salmon is about 100x more exciting and challenging than fighting a lingcod?!

Oh yeah, you can hook a Pacific Halibut up doing the mooching too.  Last couple years there have been multiple hali's picked up from 100 -150 FOW at Trinidad.

Hope to see you out there, but I don't know if the wife will let me.   :smt001

Looks a little bumpy for me to take a banzai trip over so I wish you guys luck.  Looks like I may be able to get out 8/1 or 8/2 if the weather cooperates...I feel a case of salmon-itis coming on!

Thank you for the intel! (Dr. Dave glances out the window excited he is heading out of town and pauses to wonder about the possibiliites) Ok...so how bumpy is this going to be? (DrDave becomes nervous not wanting to get his azz kicked the first time out)... I could go next weekend (thinking to himself the local lakes are becoming too familiar)... I just kept hearing good weather reports from last week (jealous of wanting to live closer to the ocean).... and want to get my first saltwater fishing in before the school year starts (He thinks to himself, "I am tried of making excuses why I should not go"). Itchy to get in the ocean (he pauses once more in the light of the evening sun) and wondering what to do :smt001

Good luck Dave, I'd love to head to the coast but it's not in the cards this weekend. :smt012
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.
