I did try those crab snares with squid one time, and apparently it was easy for a crab to take the whole thing out because I came back with nothing after only a couple casts. The whole jacksmelt worked well - maybe fill it with chicken breast or something? Douse it in crab attractant maybe too.

I could probably write a book on this subject since Ive been doing both for 20yrs before I bought a Kayak. Crab snaring simple cheep rod 10-11 ft decent backbone for casting,
think Ugly sticks, 50 lb Braid use a glove depending on where you go based on currents and tide 6-12 oz snares, anything less in weight it won't stay on the bottom. Sometimes I'll use a 6 oz triangular weight with a 6 inch piece of heavy mono to hold it attached to my snare so it holds bottom. Use Squid it's a crabs favorite food although there are many
things they will eat. Over many years I've caught limits of crabs at ocean beach with my techniques. Go at low tide you don't need to cast a mile, maybe 50-100 yards let the trap sit 10 minutes on the bottom, reel in your slack line raise your rod up to take up any slack, You'll feel the weight of a crab on your snare trust me you'll know. Quick hard pull upwards and constant reel in. that should do it. As for surf fishing well that's a different subject way too much info to go into here but if people want I'll do a write up.
cheers,
G

I'd say I've probably been fishing the surf for 15 years now.  Problem is I only started catching a few years ago  :smt044

I use a 11ft Ugly Stik and it casts fairly well.  A little heavy but overall works great.

For somebody named spinal tap, this has got to be the right choice because ... wait for it .... this one goes to 11.

Is this some kind of "inside" joke?  :smt003

I keep this in the 5er in case.
The 1 time I tried tossing a 6" lure it felt stiff.
Have not thron a snare with it yet.
