General Talk / Fishing is a right? or not?
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:24:49 AM »
If you look at the California Constitution Article 1 Section 25 it says fishing is a right, which means they can't charge for a license cause it's a right....right? Hmmm....who do I call?

CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE 1  DECLARATION OF RIGHTS

Section 25.  The people shall have the right to fish upon and from
the public lands of the State and in the waters thereof, excepting
upon lands set aside for fish hatcheries, and no land owned by the
State shall ever be sold or transferred without reserving in the
people the absolute right to fish thereupon; and no law shall ever be
passed making it a crime for the people to enter upon the public
lands within this State for the purpose of fishing in any water
containing fish that have been planted therein by the State;
provided, that the legislature may by statute, provide for the season
when and the conditions under which the different species of fish
may be taken.

It goes like this.....

I was fortunate enough to get high enough on last years AOTY to receive a couple of prizes, to include a $50. gift certificate from Hook 1. Since I'm going on the Islander trip next weekend, I thought I would use my gift certificate to purchase a couple of drift chutes (one for me and one for Andy).

I placed my order on Wednesday (9-23) and in the check out section, it has a place for gift certificates. I put the gift certificate number in, my shipping address, and my credit card info and hit the purchase button. I immediately notice the $50.00 gift certificate wasn't credited at checkout. I figured they would catch it before they billed my card, so what the heck, I'd just sit back and wait for my order.

On 9-24 I received an email confirming my order and advising it had shipped, but it still listed the full price. I sent an email to Karen, which was the name on the email and the name on the gift certificate advising that the gift certificate didn't show up on the order.

This is what I sent.....

"I have a question about the coupon that didn't seem to apply. The coupon number is norcal08, and I put it in the coupon spot, but apparently it didn't apply. Your thoughts....."

I immediately received an email back form Karen advising...

"Hi Dan,

I'll take the 10% off for you.

Thanks for the order,
Karen "

So, I replied with....

"Thanks anyway, but it was a $50 gift certificate.

Dan"

Then she replied with.....

"Hi Dan,

When did you get it?  We sent it to be used back in Feb of 2008...

Let me know and we can work something out.

Thanks,
Karen"

So, I replied with.......

"Karen,

I got the gift certificate as a top finisher in the NorCal Kayak Anglers Angler Of The Year fishing tournament. The gift certificate shows an expiration date of 01/2010 and the coupon number listed is NORCAL08. The authorized by portion of the coupon reflects "Karen".

Dan"

I haven't heard anything back yet, but the drift chutes arrived today.

I must say that they are real fast with shipping, but this is likely my last purchase.

Mahi out!

I don't know if any of you are addicted to Youtube, but my son developed an application called The Desk Tube and is in talks with Adobe to purchase it from him. It's a desktop program that searches Youtube. You can check it out at http://thedesktube.com . It's a free download.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Klamath solo run 9-30-08
« on: September 30, 2008, 05:20:54 PM »
I packed my yak on top of my truck last night and headed up to the Klamath River this morning at 4 AM. It's about a 220 mile run and I got on the water at about 7:40 am.

I didn't make it too far from where I launched before I started seeing salmon jumping. I cast once, twice, three times is a charm.......I'm ON! I fought the salmon for about 15 minutes and she got tired, so into the net she went. I was shaking with adrenalin. She went 33" and was nice and fat.

After about 10 minutes of trying to burn off the overload of adrenalin, I was able to record it on my card and start with the phone calls!

About 45 minutes later I was on again, but this fight was tougher. it went up and down stream, then up and down again. It made one last long run up stream and then the line got real loose. I though NO!....it came unbuttoned!...I started reeling fast, and to my surprise, it was still on. It made a fast run under my yak and down stream, but I wasn't able to get the line around the front of my yak. It pulled and pulled and then slack again. I thought....NO! unbuttoned???........Yep........Damn it!

Oh well, it still ended up being a great banzai trip, even with the $120.00 diesel bill.

If you have time.......I wouldn't wait!

General Talk / Coyote Hunt 9-3-08
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:01:45 PM »
I hooked up with a pal of of mine and went to a local ranch to hunt for a coyote. I've been talking a lot about killing a dog, so I thought I'd put my money where my mouth was.

We got to the ranch at about 6 pm and set up in the area where the ranch owner had been seeing the coyotes entering his property and killing his goats. We started with the injured rabbit calls and the coyote challenge calls, but we got no takers. At about 7:30 pm I was looking at the goats and noticed that they were not looking at us, so I turned to see what they were looking at and saw a coyote out of the corner of my eye, behind us. I trained my 260 Remington at the coyote, which was only about 35 yard from me, and took the shot as my pal was calling a challenge call.

The coyote dropped to the ground with a single movement. I hit him in the chest and the bullet came out of his back, severing his spine. He gasped for air a couple of times, but life was over for him. The goats can live another day under the umbrella of the freedom I provide. Ha! Ha!

Anyway, I got a big rush and a 6 pack of Red Seal Ale as reward. I have a new addiction!

General Talk / Google Maps
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:08:08 PM »
Ok,

I recently found something new (to me) on Google Maps. Go to http://maps.google.com/ and zoom into an area close to where you want to look. Next click on the "Street View" tab in the window. It will give you a street level view of the area. The only areas that are covered right now are the ones outlined in blue.

Apparently they have someone driving around in a vehicle with a gps antenna and a 360 degree camera on top of the vehicle.

It's kind of cool and scarry at the same time.

General Talk / Geocashing?
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:41:25 PM »
Has anyone done and Geocashing? I had no idea what it was until Tuesday when I ran into someone who was geocashing. I guess you sing-up online and download Lat and Long's for locations were stuff is hidden, then you drive around looking for the treasure. Once you find it, you sign the list of people who have found the treasure and leave it for the next guy.

Sounds like something we could do with our fishing locations. Like burring something or hiding it real good and giving clues as to where it is. I don't know, but it sounds like it may be fun, until gas prices get too high to leave your house.

Safety First / Driving Skills (or not)
« on: May 10, 2008, 08:50:48 AM »
On Thursday morning I decided to hit Lake Mendo for some smallmouth action. I parked my truck next to this Toyota truck with a boat trailer, but no boat.

I spent the day fishing a caught a couple bass. I left my yak at the South boat ramp and went to retrieve my truck (the one I just washed on Wednesday). I hopped in and started backing up. I saw that I had cleared the Toyota and started my turn to point the front of my truck up hill. All of a sudden I hear a CRASH! I stopped and pulled forward. I went back to look and saw that I had turned too early and smashed into the trailer hooked to the Toyota.

I must confess that I yelled the "F" word fairly loud, as my truck is a 2005 Dodge diesel with only 18000 miles and in perfect condition (not any more). I saw that I clipped the left rear of the trailer and broke the crap out of the tail light lens.  I took out one of my business cards and wrote a note and placed it on the window of the Toyota and waited for the owner to call me.

Well, it's been a couple of days and no call. I was checking the site today and saw that I had a message in my message box. I opened it and saw that I had rammed Juan's trailer.  Wow! Now I really feel like an idiot!

SORRY AGAIN Juan!

To add insult to injury, I just happen to to be a driving instructor for my department and harp on the guys that backing is where they are most likely to have an accident. I guess do as i say, not as I do.

Let the beatings begin!
