General Talk / Re: Pedal Kayaks

Hobie is the Gold Standard when it comes to pedal driven kayaks. There has been several used 2015-2016 Revo 13 and Outbacks for sale lately as people upgrade to the new 2017 models with the reverse drive. And if you don't mind the old style seat a 2012-2014 model will do just fine for a starter.

General Talk / Re: FIRE FIRE FIRE
« on: October 12, 2017, 08:29:24 PM »
Fire burned houses down within 3 houses of my mom's near the corner of San Miguel and Waltzer here in S.R. Took her almost 2 hours to drive to my house just a few blocks away the morning of the fire. There were hundreds of cars trying to get the hell out and huge traffic jams everywhere. My wife and cat bailed out but I decided to stay as did my mom who returned home that same morning when the winds died. At the time she didn't know how close the fire had burned to her house.
Finally got power back a few hours ago and now waiting for the natural gas to be turned back on so that all will be back to normal here. Some co-workers lost their homes so I'll be donating to a fund thru my workplace to help them. I'm really thinking hard how I can protect my home for any possible future fires and will be working to implement some changes soon. Prayers, well wishes, and positive thoughts to all who are struggling now.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: New Model - Hobie Mirage Compass - $1950 MSRP
« on: August 28, 2017, 05:48:30 PM »
Very interesting. Weighs 13lbs less than an Outback with very close to the same dimensions. Says there's plenty of flat space to stand in the cockpit. Looking forward to getting a better look at the rudder system and the bottom of the hull.

Doing away with the rear 8" hatch was definitely worth the weight savings. I never use my rear hatch for anything so it's absence is no loss. For that matter if I could eliminate 10lbs the loss of the forward hatch would be worth it also. I think this might be a winner. Now the colors......not so much.

General Talk / Re: Heya! This CL any good?

That appears to be an older model and I would say it's overpriced. Search for info on Hobie model year upgrades. Just about every new year's models get some kind of upgrade.

I'm looking for a campsite too. If anyone has one please let me know. Thanks!

Dune is a great choice as it looks great for the life of the kayak. Blue and red not so much.

The MD180 will fit in pretty much any year model boat
Are you sure of this?
I was told it would only fit the newer generation boats (2015 and newer)

It will fit in all of the older Mirage Drive Hobie's if you cut off the new drive's drive well guiding spines. This is a newer feature not found on older drives that does help to center the drive as you insert it into the drive well.

Since you already have a MD180 drive you have what was new for 2017. I would look for a used 2015 or 2016 kayak so you can get the new seat. The old fabric seat was very uncomfortable.

Also you should be able to get one of these years for not much more than a used 2012-2014 goes for. I wouldn't bother with 2009-2011 unless you can get one for $1000 or less that is in like new condition. These older model years have less features. 2008 and older I wouldn't buy at all as there are plenty of newer model years available if you can wait to buy.

BIG Thank you's to Ariel, Kieth, Jon, Shifra, and everyone else that helped out. We had good conditions for the tourney and a lot of halibuts were caught. I only caught shakers and a leopard shark but it was a great day to be OTW. Thanks again guys!   :smt001

Hobie Kayaks / Rudder up Hobie tracking modification
« on: June 07, 2017, 08:28:14 PM »
I found this post on the Hobie forum about adding a small glue-on skeg to each side of the keel. Sounds like a good idea for someone who needs better rudder up tracking like for tough surf launches etc.
