General Talk / Re: Kiet’s Lung Fundraiser
« on: April 13, 2023, 04:46:26 PM »
So I’ll take Friday and Monday off. I can be there before noon on Friday and I’d like to leave at a reasonable time on Monday. Can I bring the dogs?
Hi everyone, I am having a work day/weekend and garage sale at Kiet’s place, Cave Junction. This Saturday, April 15th and Sunday the 16th. I could use lots of help selling Kiet’s stuff and general clean up.
6000 West Side Rd, Cave Junction. I will be there Friday setting up and continuing to clean up. If anyone can make it, let me know how long so I can provide food/drink/sleeping accommodations.
Then…May 13th we will have a get together for Kiet, he will be back from Vietnam then. More info after the garage sale.
Thank you to all who have contributed $$$$ and help for Kiet!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Santa Cruz hali’s
« on: September 04, 2021, 02:56:44 PM »
Hi people,
I haven’t been out in a while, well over a year. I’ve been working on a project that’s just consumed me. But I’m finally near the end…

One of the main reasons I got into kayak fishing is that I wanted to target halibut. In the close to twelve years I’ve been in NCKA I’ve never fished for halibut seriously. (Mostly due to time constraints.)

Anyway, I watched a bunch of Utube videos and developed a plan. (Thanks Santa Cruz surfcaster.) Never fished Santa Cruz before, so I didn’t known where I was going.
I met up with my son at Santa Cruz harbor at six, picked up some anchovies and were paddling/pedaling out before seven.

Pedaled straight out to about forty foot and dropped down. (Did you guys know there’s a reef out there, while I never fished it I have talked to people who have have and was left with the impression that it’s all sand and no fish.) My bait kept getting taken, landed a decent sized brown rockfish, hmmm. Ok, one I’m not over sand and two my fishfinder isn’t working.
So I hit reset on the fishfinder and bumped to deeper water. Dropped in again at around fifty foot. Fishfinder is working again and now showing structure, the weather is gorgeous no wind, glassy conditions, the current is taking us south. It’s a pleasant day.

So around 10:30, at about sixty foot, I get some tip action, I wait a few, slowly raise the tip, it feels heavy, bam, I set the hook and wait, after a bit I raise the tip and feel a protest. I got him. I keep tension on and bring him to the surface I can see he’s legal, I grab the gaff, but change to the net, I pick his head up and thrust the net, got em.

The rockfish got most of our bait, so we were left jigging swimbaits. The wind picked up and we moved closer to shore no more luck, called it about 12:45.

So I landed a 27 inch halibut using a halibut rig with an 8 ounce weight and an anchovy in about 60ft of water. Had a great lunch at Seabright Deli, most importantly got to spend some quality time with my son.

Hey guys, I'm going to make this event, but i'm not entered in the turny. Is anybody going to be offended if I'm sporting a hobie, using a fish finder, and maybe even use some bait. I've never fished OC so I'd like to look around. I'll try and enter next year, if I can make the time.

Problem solved gentlemen. I went out and bought two 3/4" pvc caps and gooped them in. It looks like a perfect fix.

CappyMoMo, Thank You I am good.

AlsHobie, I actually bought it at CCK, cuz they let me demo it and were a great help in answering questions. I was going through Mel Cottons because they are the closest to me.

Eelcram, Salty, Lucky13, Thanks guys, I think it's a good fix. And I will look into the upgraded pegs.

dilbeck, Mike the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. He could have just told me about the pvc caps.

Check fix boat off list, continue packing :smt003

See ya on the water.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will take you up it. I'll see if one of the dealers carries the kit (I'm pretty sure it is limited to the seat peg hole.) I did research the Hobie website and didn't see anything about this type of stuff.

I took out the scupper plugs cuz they seemed to help hold the water in, but I'll put them back and see if it helps.

See ya OTW :smt045
