copper and canary are pretty easy to identify. no problem there. the vermilion n yellow eye are the 2 that can be mistaken so i rub the lower chin. i caught 2 last weekend that looks like vermilion. it was red and just look like it until i rubbed the lower chin and it was smooth. that's my cue.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Clamming question
« on: September 30, 2018, 11:59:04 AM »
ideally, minus tide is prefer. the higher the minus tide the better. Although, I've dug for them on non minus tide but it's harder to get them. 2 most popular clamming area that people go to are Lawson Landing and Bodega Bay. Boots, shovel and lots of digging are what you really need. Just make sure to cover back the holes,

... I'm going to point the barrel right at him if he gets anywhere near me.

That would be a very bad idea, IMHO.

yup agree with you. we just have to control our emotions. skill some people have mastered and others can't.

welcome!! best tip before you head out on any fishing expedition is to learn self rescue. you do not want to learn out there when you are fishing.

General Talk / Black Turban Snail edible?
« on: August 08, 2018, 12:51:17 AM »
Guys,
I will be heading up north to do a weekend camping and wondering if Black Turban snails are edible. i assume they should be but not quite sure.
my folks do consume water snails from the Asian market so was curious if i could collect some for consumption. last year saw a ton of them during abalone season. not too fund of sea urchin but might give that a try as well.

Boats are nice, but damn they expensive... everyone wants to go fishing no one wants to share the cleaning and maintenance.......
They just grab their gear and run... 😂

Welcome to kayaks anonymous...

I know that feeling.. every time me and my buddy go out, i get the chore of cleaning and storing the kayaks away by myself. he doesn't have anything. it's all on me!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Santa Cruz shore fishing spots?
« on: July 27, 2018, 12:25:25 AM »
I have never fish the Santa Cruz area and this will be my very first time out there.. will be renting a skiff. anyone with helpful tip on which direction to go?  are there any reef close by? would be nice to have a google map of which area to try out. maybe just fish by the kelp?

Safety First / Re: Good safety video to watch
« on: July 22, 2018, 12:17:17 AM »
To be honest, i never thought about this happening but now i'm a bit concern. i have no problems launching on rough surf, self rescue and overall good kayaking skills.  the guy in the video is very lucky he was with someone. if he was solo, things would have been very different. also reading the comment, some people bring extra paddles? has anyone have their paddle broke and become unless? never cross my mind to bring spare.

Welcome to the community.  Safety is part of the culture here, so expect to get lots of advice after stating that you've never been on the ocean and are heading there this weekend.

Here's my advice:

- make sure you can self-rescue before going out;
- dress for immersion;
- take a fully charged VHF radio and navigational aids like compass and GPS;
- don't underestimate the wind, swell and current - not to mention fog.

Best of luck.  :smt001

We launched at Markley Cove and you can't camp there but you can at Putah Canyon or Steel Park.

i have never been to this lake but have seen a YT video of fisherman catching big crappies.  is there any fee to fish the lake? fishing permit, maybe launch fee? from their web site i don't see any fee.
