Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning?

332
Okay I'm about to ask a really stupid question, but has no one noticed a -1.4 ft tide this weekend.
Wind at Tomales 7 mph...
Anyone besides me thinkin' clams in the morning, hali's in the afternoon, crabs in the evening?

Go easy, I said it was a stupid question!

Just a quick report. Paddled around glassy water at the Port this afternoon, 3-6. 3 kayaks out there but weren't from NCKA.

The boy and I jigged for nothing, trolled for nothing and finally drowned worms for a sweet 1.5 lb white cat for dinner.

The 3 yaks hooked up 4 cats that I saw.

Troller in an alum PB hooked up a 19" striper among 3 anglers..

lots of little fish dotting the surface right at sundown..

P.S. Is there some kind of decal for this club I can stick on my canoe?

One thing I appreciate about NCKA is the DIY ingenuity of the group. I know there are several really well organized minitruck campers on here. I was looking for away to hang my rod(s) in the top of my shell. I tried epoxying 3/4" PVC to the ceiling, and sliding the rods in.. but with vibration and temperature, the Epoxy didn't hold very well. Also, I wasn't too keen on the vibration of PVC against the rod.  I've been pondering it, but someone has already solved this question, if you'll just share the solution.

After that, I need find someone who knows how to bend plexigass to replace a window in that shell. Heat gun? Vacuum-form?  Local Tap's said they don't do it... anyone tried it?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Herring Spawn..
« on: February 11, 2013, 12:13:47 PM »
We motored out of Sausalito yesterday (2/10) through raccoon strait and anchored up at the south end of Paradise Beach Pier at about 1:30 under clear blue skies.
There were about 3,000 gulls and a dozen sea lions and seals at Bluff Pt, mostly sitting on the shore and floating in the tide rip. No dive-bombing, fish boil feeding frenzy at that hour.  At Paradise (north end of California City) another 3,000 gulls on the shoreline, and a dozen sea lions, but only one dive-bombing pelican and not much feeding activity. My sense was there might have been a spawning run a couple hours before and the gulls were hanging around picking off eggs in the dropping tide.

I trolled a broken back rapala and a flatfish from anchor for about an hour for no interest, and then tried to sabiki, but with 5 knots of current my line went out sideways.  We had a thrownet, but saw nothing to throw at.

No fish finder on board, and I think we would have only seen junk in the current if we had it.

Saw one other boat (a trophy 28 or so?) looking around but no one hooking up.

Don't know if any of that is of interest or helpful to anyone.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: inflatable???!!! (gasp!!)

Hear hear NEWB!  Its time for the oppression and prejudice against inflatables to end!  We should be free to post fishing stories, go to NCKA events, event get married if we want to!

I've had a bright orange sevylor since about 1980 and I've never had the nerve to pack it with fishing stuff like you did.. in front of god and everybody.
You go, man!

Kayak Sailing / Re: AI Hall of Shame - Lessons Learned
« on: January 29, 2013, 02:32:19 PM »
Second most important piece of safety gear on my boat is the anchor. Specifically for those times I'm being swept a) out the gate, b) onto the rocks, c) into second place.

If you're cramping up, couldn't one drop the anchor until either the current subsided (never more than 3 hours), or the legs recover???

General Talk / Re: "PG&E is happy"- Myth busted!
« on: December 21, 2012, 10:48:30 PM »
This group is pretty good about dispelling old wives tales.. I just read about boletes staining blue and still being edible.

PG&E's profits are largely independent of usage. In fact, PG&E gets incentives to reduce usage (see http://www.pge.com/myhome/myaccount/rateinfo/howwemakemoney/)

This is a persistent myth that should be put to rest.

General Talk / "King Tides" clams and monkey faces....
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:07:31 PM »
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "king tides" this week and wouldn't this be an opportunity to hunt some new ground for clams or monkey faces?

Tides this week of -1.6 an lower.... you experienced dudes want to 'splain why there isn't a flurry to hit the lowest tides of the year?

Just make sure you've bred first. Ever wonder what all that green glow does to the parts of you that sit on that kayak?

Where do you launch?

In a small PB, started out on the potato patch for salmon, but no one was catching and everyone was hurling- so we skedaddled into smoother waters at Muir Beach. Saw 3 kayaks working around the N point.

We hugged the south side of Muir rocks for limits of blacks with 3 going 2.5-3 lbs. taken on live anchovies.

No love on ling baits, candy bars, or trolling for pink.

You guys planning the trip on Tuesday take note. Our Captain said the fish were there a week ago, but busted up and spread out with the weather change.

Good luck.
