Little Chief Electric Smoker

Dirty but works great. Comes with 5 racks, 2 pans, and a spare heating element. This will make amazing hot smoked salmon.

Local pick up in San Mateo.

$60

Wire trace!  A lot of the local fishing is just chunks of bait, at least where I was in the Peruvian Amazon.  Lures that you’d use for bass work well for peacocks.

Thanks. I will definitely be bringing lots of wire leaders.

General Fishing Tips / Fishing in the Amazon?

We are doing a family trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon in October, and I will have a chance to do some fishing. Any recommendations on what to bring?

I was down there many years ago but was clueless and hadn’t planned for fishing, so the piranhas kept chewing me off. I finally solved that by making a bite leader out of a chain of safety pins.

If you like to stay busy (managing reefing, trim, rudder, rod, downrigger, etc) and don't mind being wet or dealing with all the schlepping and setup, AIs are great. As far as bad conditions, your confidence will likely falter before the craft will. Except for in the surf zone. It is pretty easy to get an AI sideways in the surf or break a ruder pin.

Glad to hear you are recovering. It is nice to read your posts here.

Crispy salmon skin on the outside, kimchi and cauliflower soaked in salmon grease on the inside. Delicious.

For your saline are you doing 35,000 PPM for the salt like the ocean?

I figure ocean salinity is a good starting point, but I've wondered it higher salinity would give a nice pre-brine.

KPD, where did you get the pipette tip?

This was just a squeeze-bulb style dropper. Not sure where I got it. The desired size depends on what you are connecting it to.

Pressure bleeding is always going to be tricky on a kayak - you are either waiting to remove the bloodline until you land or you are carrying extra stuff on the water. I think a simple squeeze bottle is probably the best option on the water, but I'm still looking for one I like.

I thought I saw a note about a paddle kayak that runs as fast as a Stealth at a much lower cost.  If I recall, I think KPD mentioned that?  I forgot the alternative paddle kayak was, maybe KPD can chime in.

Not I. Maybe Charles who commented earlier in this thread?

Here is one of the best guides I have seen on pressure bleeding, with detailed pictures of where to insert the pipette tip.

You don't have to cut the head off or even cut the throat if you stick the hose in through the mouth.

I've been experimenting with pressure bleeding and I am impressed so far. I normally clean salmon on the water, but last weekend it was rough and I was close to home so I bled them but didn't clean them.

When I got home I used a clean garden sprayer (only ever used for water) with a pipette tip and a salt solution. You can see the blood that came out of an already-bled fish, and how there is almost no blood in the meat when cut.

Obviously you want to be very careful about the cleanliness of the water you are bleeding with since it will permeate the meat.

Hey Paul - Nice to meet you this morning and thanks for the report on the class. I took a class like that long long ago and it was useful and fun.

Totally fine to have barbed hooks on board.

But once you have salmon in possession, you can no longer fish with barbs, even if you are "fishing for lingcod".

I would favor removing specific regulations for striped bass so they would just fall under the default bag limit of 10 fish with no size limit. The small ones are the lowest in mercury, after all. Unfortunately, there is a very vocal contingent that opposes any loosening of size or bag limits for striped bass.
