Safety First / Knowing when to call it...
« on: April 27, 2019, 05:52:08 AM »
Kids are on spring break, salmon are biting, wind and swells perfect. Time to break out the portabote and go trolling, hopefully put my kids onto some fish! 6 mile run in good conditions...yup....doable. But I forgot to bring my dang VHF radio....somehow left it at the house. ARGH!!!!! Stare at the water. Stare at other boaters/kayakers. Take a deep breath and do the right thing. Kids, we're going rockfishing instead!

What would you do?

Smiles says it all...

General Fishing Tips / Salmon first or Rockfish first?
« on: March 20, 2019, 09:10:46 PM »
Hi guys,

Salmon season is supposed to open on April 13 - 30, and I was wondering what NCKA'ers do when rigging up for a combo salmon/rockfish trip. I understand that when fishing for salmon other than trolling that you must use barbless circle hooks between Horse Mtn and Pt. Conception. So, do people troll first for Salmon, and then switch over to circle hooks for rockfish? Or do people go first for rockfish using the standard rockfish tackle (J hooks, 3 hook limit, etc.) and then go trolling for Salmon? Decisions, decisions.......

General Fishing Tips / Mooching for rockfish?!?
« on: August 10, 2018, 12:40:38 AM »
Hi guys,

I don't know why, but sometime ago, I ended up with an Okuma Canadian-style mooching rod. A 9 footer. It's been collecting dust in my garage, as I hardly mooch for salmon anymore.

Been thinking, has anyone tried mooching for rockcod? The action is just like jigging, no? I guess the issue is trying to hookset with that soft tip....

Otherwise, anyone want a mooching rod? ;-)

Hi everyone,

Checking the forecast for this Sunday, looks to be pretty calm till noon. Anyone else thinking of HMB? I'll be in a portabote with a co-worker....hope to scratch some silver.

Hello everyone,

Long time lurker and appreciate what this forum is all about. Not a kayaker, but do occasionally go out in a 14 foot portabote. I was inspired by Rudyakahalibu77's youtube videos, but I don't fish nearly as often. If it's okay with the forum, I'll probably never get a kayak, but I'd live to "buddy up" with you all. Safety in numbers and all that. Thank you.
