Title: My new idea for crabbing.
Post by: IceColdChuck on November 20, 2012, 02:00:41 AM
So I was thinking I would drill holes in gatorade bottles, and make my own bait jars to fill with pureed fish leftovers. Then I will tie masonry line and a float to each of my small bait jars. At this point I will take 10-12 of these things out with my kayak, I will drop them, take some time to go spearfishing ab diving etc and then come back and freedive for crab that may be hanging around the jars. I just figure I could throw a lot more bait jars in the back of my kayak if I didn't have to carry those heavy crab traps. And I really like diving anyway. What do you guys think, will this work? Will the crabs hang around the jars if there is no cage to keep them trapped? Thoughts.

The only problem I see is they might not be weighted enough. With a float attached to something that light weight they might not stay in the same place yo drop them.
Otherwise I don't see why it wouldn't work.

If you put the bottles in shallow and calm water this idea should work!

Good call, perhaps some led in the bait jars would keep em in place.

yep....better to "melt" the holes (vs drill) you can use a soldering iron or a hot nail. drilling tends to crack the plastic.

Yup, 27.05 in your reg book. Chumming including chumming with live bait is permitted.

I think worth trying for sure!

Couple things to consider...when I've dove for dungies they are pretty darn fast!

I imagine if you have 3 or 4 around your bait bottle you can maybe grab 1 or 2 and the others would spook and run away.

Watch out for the claws too cuz as soon as your grab em underwater they will try and bite you!

Good luck, take pics and let us know how it goes!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Could you put loop snares on the bottle? Yank on the float line and snare any on or close to the bottle. grab one or two crabs on the bottom near the bottle and then bag the bottle and any snared theron, before they can escape - or would that take too long breath wise ?

I'd skip the puree and use a whole carcass in a mesh bag full of rocks.  Easier and gives the crabs something to keep them busy.

I'd skip the bait bottles altogether. Just find a buoy, swim down, and grab any dungies near the trap.  :smt005

Better yet.....go to doran beach, pop an ab limit off bodega rock then pull any of the buoys you find out front.  Be sure to shine a light directly on the float to glare out any spy cam shots, wear leather gloves to get past the barbed wire and if you're lucky, there will be a free gopro in the trap along with a limit of dungees.   :smt003

Those crabs do not like to be pick up and when they are in the water they are fast and furious they will get you.
TRUST ME, IT HURTS...I should know.

good Luck

I have picked up dungies while free diving before it was incidental but I didn't think it was that hard, and I didn't get pinched.

Just grip real hard around the claws while trying to put in bag. if your holding the claws shut how can they grab you. just don't let them pinch your hand between the body and claw arm.

Maybe fill the bottle halfway with cement to weight it down

Any law against pinning them with an ab iron first before you grab em?
