Anyone planning on being out in Santa cruz this week? I'm planning on fishing Monday- Wednesday, hoping to have someone else out there as there is saftey in numbers. Also any advice on area would be appreciated, it will be my first time in the area. Targeting halibut and rockfish unless I find evidence of salmon in the area. I will be on channel 69TIA

I’d recommend you start heading towards the mile buoy which is a mile in front of the boardwalk. On that route it’s fairly common to get a butt. Pass the buoy and head west. There’s been a lot of red tide so I’d recommend staying 60-80’ of water. Most reef is under 60’ of water.  More sand is deeper. I’ve gotten several butts in front of the lighthouse around 70’ of water the last few years.
If you see Casper “the friendly white dolphin” he’ll point the bait out for you.

Thought I’d give those who use trailers a heads up that there were signs posted about the ramp being closed next week for repairs. I would think they’d find a way to do a section at a time so one ramp can be open but this is what I read on the signs.

On a brighter note I managed a 32” trout in front of the green can today.

Safety First / Re: Shark Shield vs. GWS
« on: August 21, 2019, 08:04:01 PM »
I don’t think it would cover two kayaks unless you were literally within feet of each other. Unless it went by the ss first and it detoured him from the general area. It’s easier to say this because I’m on an AI but I keep mine next to me in a dry bag. I found the battery doesn’t last as long as I do out there, creates extra drag I don’t need and I just don’t worry as much. I keep it with me in case one comes around or I’m still on the AI after being hit. I could deploy fairly quickly. My biggest fear  is a hit strong enough to knock me off and watch the AI sail away. Especially because I’m out there solo frequently. With the amount of sharks rising quickly along with their size I have considered strapping it to my ankle like a diver so I can turn it on if this happens. So far my laziness has out weighed my fear.  Odds of getting a full attack is very rare. Odds of him sticking around after realizing your not food even more in your favor. Unless he’s protecting something or just having a really bad day. I will say just having it does give me extra peace of mind which has made it worth it for me. Expensive placebo though

The wife wants to go out on a smaller boat targeting salmon.  We are considering the New Captain Pete on Monday but would prefer a smaller boat.

Any suggestions?

Que Sera Sera is 5-6 people but I’m not sure of their schedule. Hmb harbor.

Leaving me out?
It was dark and I didn’t realize you were filming. Thought you were just very interested in the AI. Lol

Yes. It’s Mark. Good memory Nick.

Introductions / Re: Hitch extender question
« on: July 08, 2019, 09:46:09 PM »
Hello everyone, im new to this forum just bought me and my wife our first kayaks and i decided to start of using a hitch extender to transport them  while i save up for a bed rack i drive a 2019 Tacoma . My question is when transporting the kayaks i have the hitch extender on and tailgate down wich blocks visibility to my license plate .. anyone here use hitch extender if so have you had any issues getting pulled over?

I just ordered one myself. No experience yet but what I read was 4’ past bumper needs a flag. Didn’t consider the license but if it’s an issue I’d be looking into a paper license on the side like a new car would come with. After that see about a normal license on a window?  I’ll probably wait and ask the cop that’s writing me up for suggestions.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Monday?

Gonna hit HMB at sunrise and troll around until the wind comes up at 10ish.  Me and my buddy will be on 69 if you change your mind.  Win, lose, or draw, I'll post up a report.

Saw you guys on the way out. Hmb was lifeless for me today. Went 100’ of water in front of Mavericks. No salmon, no sign of bait, no active birds.  But turned out to be very nice conditions so that’s a win. Hope you guys had success.

I’m wondering if that odd thread ever existed in the first place?

I went out yesterday and today and did well both days. Identical catches is what it seemed like. Yesterday felt as predicted which was calm. Today the wind blew in the morning then it laid down. Between the two days I got about 18 dungies (about 8 of them were big) and kept about 7 rock crab. Threw back several shorts of both species. Some traps around 40’ and some around 25’. The deeper ones produced better sized where the shallow produced more.

Hope that helps.

Awesome Jae!  Keep them coming.
