New to NCKA! Just looking to meet more folks with the same “addiction.” I’ve Been seriously fishing for 20 years (mostly fly fishing) and used to dive for abalone out of a kayak but I’m fairly new to kayak angling. I recently drug some nice rock fish into my older Wilderness Systems Ride and instantly acquired this sickness, and had to upgrade to a nice PDL. I found a new 2019 Old Town Predator 132 PDL and pulled the trigger! Can’t wait to get her in the water.

If there are any kayak anglers in the Ukiah/Fort Bragg/Mendocino area who need buddies to peddle out with, hit me up! Im currently set up to focus on Lings/rock fish. I’m a Fire Fighter and typically get 4 days off every week so I have time to fish and can get out if the conditions are decent.

One question I do have for the savvy veterans: When looking at the ocean conditions ahead of time to try and decide when/if to go put your boat in the water, at what wave height and interval do you decide it’s just too rough? I’m sure this question will spark a variety of answers but just trying to get an idea what conditions are generally considered too uncomfortable or flat out unsafe.

Thanks!
-RJ

Plenty of us in mendo co.
Welcome my friend.
Wind matters a lot ,  especially S wind... NW Swell 2-4ft 8-10sec is doable. With wind lesser then 10mph. But you have to account for SW swell and wind also ... if S wind is around 5+Mph  it’ll get choppy.

Don’t forget tide swings also. -0ft in the AM +5ft in the PM, that’s a big tide swing.

But if you decide to go, and it doesn’t look appealing or out of your comfort zone . It’s all good to call it.

Lots of variables in determining comfort and safety levels. As someone who has spent time plucking snails off rocks, you should be well set in facing the madness. Different pucker factors for sure with kfishing, but also plenty of joy and goodness as well. Some serious pucker factor getting salmonoids  :smt003
