Throwing topwater and swimbaits for monster peacocks in tbe amazon has been on my list since I was a kid. I was hoping to do this trip in 2024 but it’s looking like 2025 may be the year. Who did you book through? Any advice on timing, gear etc?

Ron,

I’m not sure how long you’ve been fishing, but you appear to be severely misguided on alot of subjects and I have a hard time understanding how you’re coming to such drastic conclusions.

Abalone are “gone” because there was a mass die off attributed to a red tide and algae bloom that plagued the intertidal coast for several weeks.  Then the kelp forests that were the food source for the survivors got hammered by storms and urchin, whose population went unchecked because of a seastar dieoff.  You can read about it online from any of the Sonoma based news organizations.  While poaching was always an issue, it was not THE issue. Considering that there were bad actors around when I was actively diving, there was still a ton of abalone all over the sea floor and getting a limit at any spot was easy.

I also wouldn’t consider a handful of old dudes at the pier, the best barometer for measuring halibut populations.  The fish are gonna be fine bud, take a breath.

………gnar.

I didn’t realize it until I’d watched it a couple times…….dudes leg was dangling in the water behind the impact zone.  If that sucker had zero’n on a flailing foot, leg would have been gone for sure.  Glad he’s okay.

Is this Ugly Stik the all-around option talked about above?  I see even "Ugly Stik Tiger" yielded a few different rods (at least by the name).

And, it seems to me most technical data is missing the most critical - how heavy can the load be, before the stick breaks.  Is this not important?  Seems to me this is equivalent to the weight capacity of a kayak, which is very critical data.

A few rods I have now are very thin and bends easily; if I hook a 20 lb halibut I think the rods might break.

Alright brother……normally there are no circumstances in which I’d recommend an ugly stick…….but ……..you should get an ugly stick.

And ironically enough, I heard a recent suggestion that rod manufacturers should adopt a more uniform rating system based on the maximum drag pounds it takes to shut down the rod blank. Your post kinda implies that same concept……maybe it needs to be adopted lol.

Budget?  Drifting or trolling?  Kayak, boat or both?  What reel will it be paired with?  Existing rods in your quiver?  Will it need to pull double duty in another fishery?

General Talk / Re: CDFW Considers CaliHali Limit Reduction
« on: April 16, 2023, 11:50:03 AM »
I don't think it is the number of fisherman that determine the overall catch but it is the efficiency most anglers have now. GPS mapping , color depth finders, the ability to mark and return to spots. In the past, offshore fishing depended on reading rock outcroppings, the color of water, and accepting that current with fog would push you off a hotspot into dead zones and one had a hard time re-locating where the fish were. We have entered the electronic era and it is easier to catch fish so yes, reduce limits to whatever makes fishing sustainable.

Plus one. Today if a fisherman is on a hot bite and conditions are just perfect he can pull the cell phone out of the pocket and relay that information to a friend or family member and from that friend or family member it gets passed on again to a couple more people in the blink of an eye.
In the not so long ago past you would have to wait till you were at a payphone to relay that information which could be at the end of that day's fishing or the next morning .
Today everything's real time kind of like watching the news it is not recorded from a couple hours ago or from yesterday like it was 25 or 30 years ago. :smt001

Everyone should read The Unnatural History of the Sea by Callum Roberts. In it he discusses how as fish have become harder to catch, our fishing methods have become more efficient, so we still catch (more or less) the same numbers of fish even though populations are declining, leaving us unaware of the damage we are doing to our fisheries. He also covers "shifting baselines," the phenomenon by which we normalize declining fish populations so much that we've forgotten how productive our fisheries were 10, 20, 50, 100 years ago, etc. It's very interesting. Highly recommended.

Well, knowing this information about your ticket, the Asian delegation will take you.   :smt044 :smt044

Does this mean Wu Tang is still up for grabs? cause I'm about to diversify these bonds

WU TANG WWWWW

Very controversial subject…..the custody battle following the racial draft has been pretty nasty.  Everyone knows that they were officially signed by the Asian delegation but previous agreements, as negotiated by Ol Dirty Bastard, aka Dirt McGirt, aka Russel Jones, has the Wu officially committed to The Children.  Sources close to the group say that he was mentally unfit to negotiate the terms.  The group points toward incidents like his escape from jail, only to be re-arrested later….on stage….while performing in a rap show.  That, or, him rushing the Grammys in protest of Puff Daddy receding the rap album of the year award…..when the whole world knows it should have been the Wu for the Wu Tang Forever double album.  Others that  witnessed that event, myself included, think it was evidence that he was thinking clearly as it was an injustice to the group and hip hop in general…..and the truest words spoken that night.

Not sure how it’s gonna unfold but safe to say, they ain’t up for grabs.  :smt005
