My office in downtown sj  is normally a pretty desolate place after dark, actually with the hobos living in the guadalupe creepin around all night its really kinda shady.

Been grinding all day and barely got to leave, as im driving out if the lot theres about 100 souless beings walking around aimlessly and  bumping into each other in the park accross the street.  Turns out theyre all just playing pokemon go lol.

Wtf is happening to society.

As professionals on the perch tournament circuit, the perch slaying duo of Angle and master chef Omar needed a photog to chase them around the beach recording the carnage.....I invited myself along to fill that role.

With a morning low tide, stained water and high surf the prospects were looking pretty grim.....for everybody else, but the perch pounders were optinistic, these conditions separate the men from the perch punks.

They got in and chucked away, hucking heavily scented grubs.

After a few hours of the slow wind and grind Angle and i lost focus.  As we're bs'ing on the sidelines Omar hooked a decent perch reeled it in, all the way up to the rod tip, and hoisted it 8' in the air and walked out of the surf victorious.

The MORF, getting it done.....bait is for rooks.

Shortly after, I got one in on the sandworm.  It was small, something I'd normally refer to as bait, but in this day it fended off the skunk. I'll take it.

Considering the conditions, we figured omar might be in the running.....till we got to the weighin and he came up shy of placing by a few ounces.  Didn't matter, he got it done on plastics while everyone else (juniors and adults) was soaking bait.

At the raffle, Omar commented that they should have solicited a spa cause he needed a massage.  Angle asked if he was sore, Omar replied that his back was hurting.  Angle asked what happened to his back and his response was an instant classic...."Its sore cause I've been carrying the weight of this team all day."   Samartass....

Bushy throws a hell of a party.....till next year.

Who else is in?

Gentlemen.......the time is upon us.  Let us discuss the matters of our 3rd annuall celebration of joy, goodwill toward our fellow man and semi-drunken buffonery.

Just to recap.....for those new and those not manly enough to have partaken in past events....

Year one we celebrated at pizza and pipes in Santa Clara.  We essentially invaded the joint spending hours eating pizza, drinking beer and, the highlight of the night, watching a half dozen warriors risk an ungodly night of digestion in the big ass pizza challenge.  You've never experienced sympathy till you've stared into the desparate face of a person that's halfway into eating a pizza the same diameter as bro dozer tire.  I can't remember if it was sc trace or dry bones but one of them reigned supreme.

Year two was Harry's hofbrau.....where a bus load of senior citizens arrived for dinner at 3 pm and ate all the ribs before we got there.  The rest of the grub was still pretty awesome and Antonio almost engaged in fisticuffs when some old bird wasn't respectful of the ncka reserved table and tried to move in on our territory.  Some claim he would have mopped the floor with the old gal but she had fire in her belly, I think she would have put up a few good rounds.  Later we had an awesome white elephant in which that jerk Pablito scored the sweetest  I Heart Pandora shirt you ever laid eyes on.  The rest of the night was a blur but the drinks flowed and the women trolled.

So what say you ncka......where shall we host event #3?

Shall we do it on a saturday to give out of towners a shot at attending? If so, which day?

Post Party entertsinment?  Should we find that salty old hag and have her bare knuckle fist fight CDM in the parking lot?

(On a semi-related note.....I tried to find a midget tossing service but apparently it's illegal in some states and generally frowned upon by society.....wtf.....if a midget consents or is compensated, shouldn't they decide whether or not they shall be thrown head first into a freakin target. What happened to letting man decide his destiny....get it together USA....off soapbox)

Any way.....let's start spit ballin some ideas people.

Couldn't sleep last night....wound up bumping around YouTube till the wee hours. I came accross these videos and thought both were pretty cool.

A general introduction to the CA Uni fishery. I'm a little envious of the lifestyle some of these guys have lived.  How sweet would it be to living off the water, commercial diving and surfing some of the wildest places in the state. Especially during the heyday when the $$ was really flowing.

This one is a long but interesting historical review of commercial abalone diving.  If you're sensitive to carnage pics you might want to skip this one.  Piles of abs......these guys raked the floors.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Ditch Your Weight Belt Offer
« on: May 21, 2015, 03:58:17 PM »
I was reading Big Jim's post earlier today about a buddy that wisely decided to ditch his weight belt when he got into some trouble on a dive.

I've been in a few sticky situations in the past where I contemplated doing the same.....but letting a $100 bill sink to to the seafloor isn't always an easy decision to make.

I have about 6-7, 2lb dive weights laying around collecting dust.  I'm offering them up as a replacement to any member here that has to ditch their belt this season. Hopefully having a backup will make the decision to ditch a little easier if you're caught in a bad spot.  The only caveat, you gotta share your story with us.

I bought this boat from headwaters as a project boat.  It was a demo yak that sustained significant damage when a customer didn't tie it down to his rack before driving away.  Angle was in Lodi picking up the green machine (sitting next to mine on the beach).  I bought it sight unseen after Dan gave me a run down of the damage.  I'm glad he extended the offer.....this boat is slick.

It sat in the garage for a few months before I started hacking away it with a knock off fein and various dull razored utility knives.  From there on it was fun with fiber and methylcrylate.....good times.

There were multiple cracks in the stern of the hull.  I wanted it bombproof, so I took it a notch beyond.  Cut a partial chunk off the deck, between the handle and stern to get at the backside of the crack.  Glassed over the inside.  Reinforced the two sidewalls where the deck would hang over the hull.  Drilled a hole at the end of each crack, put a bevel the whole length of the crack to increase the bonding area and filled the cracks from the outside.  Put two plates beneath the area where the deck would have seams.   Used a thickened glass fiber/methylcrylate mixture to fill in all the voids.

Expert color matching.....

New life.....

Since it was a demo.....it had a sticker on it that said "DEMO"......which earned it the nickname, the demon....,or el demon in espanol.  In the tradition of naming your craft after the fine ladies you encounter as a man of the sea.....I'm gonna keep the demon name as a tribute to my ex.  Unlike her, these yaks are easy to fix and worth keeping around.

General Talk / Open Face Line Counter Reels
« on: February 17, 2015, 06:52:04 PM »
I've never seen or heard of one......nor have others it seems.......do they exist?

I'm not a fan of level winds for most applications, when fish take a long run the line often smokes off the spool and the guide either designed to be stationary when drag is being pulled, or line smokes off the spool faster than the line guide can keep up with and you end up with a ton of extra stress on the line from the line guide.

It'd be nice to have a have a non-level wind version for salmon or striper trolling, where fish often peel line like crazy after the strike.  I'm not a fan of super light drags for this, I like a moderate light drag to ensure hookset but light enough to let them run. This gets kinda hairy with a hot fish.

Every line counter I've ever seen operated off the line guide so it seems a non-level wind reel would be pretty unique. Have you seen one that was factory offered like this?

Feel completely free to discuss..... :smt001

General Talk / Solid Work FasTrak
« on: January 06, 2015, 12:07:01 PM »
I had a meeting in Sonoma County mid November and ran through the City, crossed the gate to and from.

Sunday I check my mail and Find a notice from FasTrak with red warning bars and immediate attention notices accross the front.

Shazaaaam! Toll Evasion baby, notice date of 1/2/15, I owe $7.00 for the toll and $25 for being a scumbag scofflaw.

My initial reaction....wtf, never got my 1st notice, which I was waiting for. Monday, go to mailbox. Sure enough, there's my bill for the Bridge Toll, dated 1/5/15.

And mailed to me the day after they send me a $32 bill for being a scum.  Sweet.

Obviously I will contest......or will I?

Just got off the phone with the number on the back of the notices, according to the automated phone message, FasTrak is too busy to answer my call and directs me to the  website.

I'll be emailing them shortly :( I wonder if they'll figure out the coded swear words I include letting them know what I think of their service.

In lieu of an insurmountable eating challenge I'm proposing that we gather somewhere with good beer, somewhat edible food and a management team that doesn't mind us completely taking over the joint with our raucous behavior......till the place closes.

I'm thinking a Thursday/Friday so as to not interfere with fishing.....or whatever it is your wife has planned for you.  Another white elephant with gifts of the fishing/hunting/outdoors persuasion (anybody that brings sabikis will be treated as a xmas tree and wrapped with the offending sabiki as if it were a string of lights).

Anybody:
*Interested,
*Available early December'ish
*Have suggestions for a house of dubious reputation which caters to the likes of scalawags, heathens and hooligans.
*have ideas for a non-eating challenge to engage the masses and entertain via foolish behavior

Edit

New Date: Friday 12/19 @ Harry's Hofbrau in San Jose 6:30pm

Now that we got time and location squared away.  Who's in?

General Talk / Toyota Mechanic - South Bay
« on: July 03, 2014, 02:27:35 PM »
Anybody able to reccomend a good mechanic or shop in the south bay?

Toyota Hilux 22re engine, started randomy hard starting, losing power/stuttering underway, overheating at rest, billowing white smoke from exhaust.  Head Gasket?

Either way, I need this thing back on the road and have zero time to even entertain the idea of doing it myself.

For Sale / Clearing Out The Garage
« on: May 27, 2014, 02:08:22 PM »
I have too many toys that just don't get used anymore. Gonna be posting a few items for sale.

Up first:

9' perception Jazz
Bought it for my daughter and it was a great paddler for her.  I've also used it as a light weight, quick in and out yak for ab diving.

It's got your normal scuffs, scratches and could use a good scrubbing but its a solid little yak.

Sold..........keep checking, got more random stuff coming.
