So with my/our usual lingcod/rockfish season done for the year I'm looking to find other options with the kayak on the Mendocino coast.

Tried for CA halibut out of MacKerricher (at bit north of Fort Bragg, paddling north to very sandy Ten Mile Beach) last weekend and zippo. We were the only boats of any kind out there even on a super chill day, so that should have been a clue that maybe that's not the best halibut area, but I was with a buddy there last year fishing (south of the launch) for lingcod when he accidentally pulled in a 32" halibut, so I know they're in the general area at times.

Any suggestions on where else to try for CA halibut (or maybe petrole sole?) on the Mendocino coast?

And what's the typical season for halibut on the Mendocino coast? And what depth, typically?

Thanks,

James

I’ve done okay on sole out of RG. Straight out from the launch and just past the rocks to get 100+ feet over sand. I’ve caught halibut in the same area thru mid November.

Since no RF I would run 2 rods, I with halibut sized offering and one with sole sized offering. If you are getting your baits torn up it means you are over sand dabs and either change to dab gear (large sabiki) or make a decent move.

ftbraggyakfish - I've been interested in the same thing, going to hit up the sand out from Vandamme when the ocean calms down a bit on a weekend, I have been getting out for dabs and sole with good success. I've heard of occurrences of single halibut being caught here and there, but no solid info to share.  With the nearshore rockfish being closed we are going to have to get creative to stay on the water.
