I just made a Kydex keel guard for my TI. Following some YouTube videos, I cut my keel guard from a paper template. Taped it in place and slowly molded it to shape using a heat gun.
Just sealed it off with marine goop, and will clean it up when it dries.

We all know that any little piece of gear dragging in the water can create significant drag. Has anybody else noticed any effect on your boat's speed with one of these keel guards in place?

Thanks,
-Andrew

Not this specifically but I have the berleypro guards for both front and back and I haven't noticed any change in speed on my revo 13.

Nice Andrew,
I just did the same with my Revo 2 weeks ago. Way cheaper than buying the Berley Pro guards.
I sealed the edges with clear waterproof silicone. Gonna see how the double sided 3m tape holds🤔

Nice looks clean. I just redid my pvc guard w some thicker pvc and it was a total pain in the butt but I had run my last guard all the way through dragging it on concrete.

Not my cleanest work but nothing a buttload of lexel couldn't patch up

I wasn't happy with the way the mold wouldn't really stay firm to the side of the kayak, especially around the flared-out ends. I think the silicone will help remedy that by sealing it off from water.
Next time I'll use thinner Kydex. I used .08 and I think .06 would be more malleable.

I previously used some expensive keel tape and it peeled off the bow just from sitting in the garage. Not impressed.

By the way, nice on job on some real clean work. Mine looks messy. And how did you get such a sharp bend in the stern piece? Didn't that cause the edges to swell out away from the boat?

Ooo, this is a good use for kydex. I've got a bunch of extra from some other projects too.

Do you guys add these to fresh hulls, or after you've worn it down a little bit? I'm pretty careful on hard surfaces with mine, but some scraping is inevitable loading/unloading.

It did cause the side to swell but with a little more heat I was able to press them down.
