I have a 2013 Outback and the rudder deploy function has failed.  The recover rudder system works fine.  When I deploy the rudder,  the rudder does not lock in place and as I peddle the boat faster, the rudder swings back and I can't steer.  The deploy handle has a little cord showing when retracted.
When the rudder system first failed a few months ago I looked inside the hull and discovered the bungee that retracts the deploy cord had failed so I replaced it with new and reassembled it as close to what I originally found.  It worked but the deploy handle still had a little slack in it when the rudder was retracted.
I've refered to Youtube for some help but find little on an older Outback rudder repairs
What are your thoughts?  Do I take it to the Hobie dealer or ?

Maybe a dumb question but are you cleating the down rudder line? Here's the repair manual for the twist-n-stow rudders:

The only thing I did was to replace the bungee cord material....I didn't know how to secure the bungee to the boat so I did the wire/carabineer trick.  I've watched several YouTube videos but nothing I've seen shows how to handle the bungee.....the system worked fine until the bungee frayed and broke.  I'm attempting to send photos now.

I was wondering the same thing. Use some force to pull it down, then cleat it. If it pops up, it would seem that there's too much slack in the spectra. I don't think the bungee would make any difference wrt the rudder staying down, as I believe that's just to make sure the pull cord retracts into the hull.
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

There is usually a tension "grabber" near where the line goes thru the hull. Once deployed pull on cord till tight then either lock into the tensioner or tie off. Hobie rudders won't steer properly with too much play in the rudder line.

Yes, secure the down rudder line in the cleat after you pull it:

It appears that the rudder does not "lock" into the down position as per the photos.  The arrow points to the "locking" mechanism in the "locked" as well as the "not yet locked" position.  Once deployed and cleated the rudder does not stay in the locked position.  If you peddle slowly, it will stay down but upon speeding up the rudder will "blow back" and become ineffective.....also if you hit some weeds it will do the same.....I just don't know how to fix this.

Quick thought. You mentioned new, tighter bungie cord. Check the rudder pullup line and make sure it is no so tight as to prevent the rudder from locking into place. Same for deploy line.

Can you lock the rudder in place if you push it into the locking mechanism by hand? If not, then the part that hooks into the locking mechanism may be broken. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like some plastic is missing there.

The bungee is tight when the rudder is deployed so I'll loosen up the bungee and see what happens.

As for the locking mechanism it appears to have enough "detent" that I believe it should hold....after loosening the bungee I'll check it again.

I really appreciate all the help....Thanks.

I loosened the bungee 2 inches from 7 to 9.  It works way better and the bungree is not as taught.  I'll have to drop in the port and see if this improvement is the answer.  I have a little slack in the deploy handle but I can live with that if all else is good.  Thanks for the advice.
I'll post the results soon.

I'll post some pics later....can't seem to upload pics now....very frustrating!!!!

Here's the pics...the first photo shows it "almost locked"
The second shows I lengthened the bungee from 7 to 9 inches.
