We have some bag limit changes and possibly depth changes in some areas.  As always, we get screwed in our section up north even though we have less good weather fishing days and less pressure because of smaller population.

The PFMC just published in the briefing book the depth, seasons and bag limit alternatives being proposed for 2021/2022.

Options 1and 2:   no season change
Option 3           :   Jan 1 to Dec 31

Bag Limits: all three options   
Cabezon    up to 10
Black RF    up to 10
Canary       up to 10
Ling Cod    2
Vermillion  Probably set at 2 for a sub-bag

Depths:

Option 1   No change for any area
Option 2   North - no change: stay at 30 fathom
                Mendo go to 30 fathom from 20 f
                SF       go to 50 fathom  from 40f
                South  75 to 100 fathom
Option 3  All areas - all depths

These three alternatives will be put out for public comment at the April Meeting, the final decision will be made at the June Council meeting.

My parents flew in from Texas saturday so I got my dad geared up and ready for some fast rockfishing.   My friend Tony joined us so we loaded 3 Hobie Outbacks on my truck, gassed up at Bear River, grabbed some breakfast sandwiches in Ferndale and started our over the hill.  We arrived at Cape Mendocino to see the most kayaks I  have ever witnessed on the water out there before on a single day.  There was nearly 20 kayaks on the water that day including us.  Tony, my dad and I drove past where everyone else launched from and launched our kayaks just up the road with a straight shot to Devils Gate.  We had a late start and the conditions were decent when we started.  We started right off the bat getting doubles of blacks or black and a ling, but the current was ripping and the wind started picking up quickly.  My dad and I went in and back to the launch since it wasn't conditions for a 1st time kayaker.  I was disappointed that the wind blew us off so quick, but my dad still enjoyed the fishing catching at least 6 fish that were all released.  I kept one big black and Tony brought home a nice verm and a few blacks.  We saw all the other kayaker head in shortly after we got on the water.  We did get hang out the beach and get some help  bringing our kayaks back up the hill from some fellow kayaker friends that I introduced to Dad.  We drove home talking about the funew experience we had on the water.  Some big lings were caught by the kayaker who got there early.  The biggest was 40.25" and around 25lbs.  Everyone brought home a few good fish.

On Monday a friend texted saying he was going to get the day off from work and needed some company at the Cape so I got the go ahead from my folks since they wanted a relaxing day to go see some sights and stuff.  My dad said they would drive down where we were to check us out and show my mom the area we fished.  When Tony and I arrived at the Cape there was lots of fog, but it was high enough to see the rocks and see shore from where we were fishing.  Our friend Matt was ready and we got our gear together and launched into some bumpy conditions.  We headed south since the drift was fast to the north.  The fish were biting as usual and we began catching lots of blacks and smaller but keeper lings.  I caught a nice verm at 21" that I decided to keep.  We all caught lots of fish and released many more.  It wasnt my day for a big ling though I  almost got it at the end of the day when I caught a 26"er that spit up a good sized fresh octopus that I tipped my swim bait with.  I had a big one on a few times, but they kept shaking the hook.  Oh  well I will get my big ling next time. Tony and Matt both had some big lings at 38"+ as well as some nice verms and blacks.  Matt went in first and Tony came in a half hour behind him and I was a half hour behind Tony since I was trying to get my big ling for the day.  When were at the beach we had some cold brews while we measured the fish, took some fish porn pics, and talked about the day out there.  The day started bumpy with a fast drift , but ended with calm waters and a much slower drift.  Matt left before us and Tony and I finally hit the road just at dark and didn't get home till 10:30.  It was a long day.  My parents made it out there and walked the beach as well as went to the mouth of the Mattole.  On the way they came back thinking we might be back in, but it's hard to get o ff the water out there when the fishing is so good.  It's hard to believe that this was my 4th trip to Cape Mendocino on my kayak already this year in the last 2 weeks.

I'm hoping to get one salmon trip in on a boat if the weather cooperates.  Either way my dad and mom will all get on the kayaks and either cruise Trinidad harbor or Shelter cove harbor so my mom can experience the water up close and hopefully the whales will be nearby like they were on Saturday in Trinidad where I took the whale picture below

There have been 2 50lb WSB caught in the last week in the Bay area.  One from a charter boat out of Emeryville and the second one near the Berkely Flats old pier drifting a live chovy.

So far I have 140+ 3oz & 4oz jigheadswith 8/0 hooks  painted with eyes in 14 colors so far.  I also have, 1, 1.5, & 2oz jigs too az well as 8, 10, & 12oz mooching weights too.

Ben (Sumoco) and I are in Sacramento attending the PFMC meeting until Thursday.  During this meeting three recreational alternatives will be developed for each marine salmon zone within WA, OR and CA.  The same will be done for the commercial fishery within each state.  Yesterday we worked with both the CA and OR state recreational representatives and proposed three alternatives for the CA KMZ (OR/CA border south to Horse Mtn.).  Alternatives were also developed for the Ft Bragg, SF and Monterey zones.  As a HASA representative my focus is the CA KMZ and to a lesser extent the OR KMZ and Ft Bragg.  These adjacent zones directly effect the CA KMZ.

This year there are fewer Klamath as well as few Sacramento River fish available than the last two years, however there are less restrictive impacts on the Sacramento Winter Run Chinook than last year.  We are not directly impacted by Sac. Winter Run Chinook because we are north of Pt. Arena however their abundance significantly influences the seasons south of Pt Arena in the SF and Monterey zones.  I would consider this to be an "average" abundance for both the Klamath and the Sacramento Rivers.

With that background the following draft alternatives were submitted for modeling this morning. Please realize this is a process that will take the week to submit draft alternatives, model them, tweak them, model them and tweak again.  We are attempting to develop a range of three alternatives that comply with the minimum spawning escapement goals for each river.  These alternatives will go out for public comment with the final decision being made during the PFMC meeting in Vancouver, WA, April 4-10th.

Recreational CA KMZ

Alternative 1)  May 1st through September 7th, two chinook/day, 24" minimum size limit

Alternative 2)  May 17th through September 7th, two chinook/day, 24" minimum size limit

Alternative 3)  May 24th through September 1st, two chinook/day, 20" size limit

We will see the results of modeling in the morning and almost certainly the combination of rec and commercial season will exceed the allowable catch.  Also please don't think these alternatives are solid, rather consider them as bookends and we can modify the alternatives as long as we remain within the bookends.  For instance we could have a 20" size limit in Alternative 1 or 2 if there are sufficient fish.

I want to get my halibut video up, but I want to make it look good with music, titles and effects, but Microsoft movie maker isn't going to cut it.  It crashes too much and it doesn't offer much.  What programs do ya'll recommend.  The video is 27minutes long so I need to shorten it up and throw in some still shots with good transitions and stuff like that.  I don't want to throw some boring lame video like some of my past ones up.  It will be a good video once I find the right program to edit it with that doesn't crash.

So Wednesday and Thursday the ocean will be super flat and as of right now the tuna water is about 20 miles out.  I have 2 potential tow boats and the water may be closer by Wednesday or Thursday.  Anyone interested?

Any of yall who have caught albacore from the kayak can you please share your tips and experience.  Also any of yall experienced albacore fisherman please chime in about dead and live bait stops if you have experience with them.  I want any info I can get that may help.
