General Fishing Tips / Re: Russian Steel

Thanks for the intel, Rockroach.

Just to make sure I’m understanding you about plunking... You’re saying fish by your feet as in right up against the bank and out of the current? That makes sense. I understand that steelhead like to stay out of strong current, so it makes sense that they’d hug the bank when the river is raging.

Is that what you were getting at?
Exactly!
If the location is right all you need to do is throw out 10' in front of you.  I didn't believe it until I seen it.

The feeder creeks are dropping fast so there might be a chance the upper section will be fishing this weekend.
The Russian takes forever to clear. I fished it twice last winter and I only live 5 minutes away.
If you're gonna plunk, literally fish at your feed.
Good luck.

Kayaks / Re: Inflatable kayaks for river fishing
« on: March 24, 2017, 01:53:28 PM »
Have you checked out the Outcast Commander or Water Master Inflatables?

I had a Dave Schadden/North Fork outfitters pontoon for years.
It was too heavy to be carrying around without wheels but it was super maneuverable, pulled plugs easily and got me into spots that were too tight for driftboats.
I looks like he's making inflatable kayaks now too. Might be worth checking out.
Don't trust his ratings when it comes to whitewater though. He's full of shit

Another option is a Jackson Kayak Coosa. It isn't inflatable but it's a badass Steelhead Slaying Kayak.

Not much fun.
I came home (well tried anyway) from work last night to find my road looking like this.
Hopefully not couch surfin' tonight.
Hopefully you can get through Sweetwater.
You're welcome to stay at our house Chad.

Thanks Eric.  Great discription on tackle and technique. We are headed up to the Navarro and Gracia. Maybe a little time on brush creek or alder creek. Smalll water is my favorite. I love the hiking. May look you up in a year or two when I'm comfortable with Andrew handling a kayak on his own. He us 11. He has been in the ocean solo twice. Dont tell his mom. He has the confidence and smarts just needs to be a little stronger paddler.
Are you planning on kayaking down those rivers?
If so, be careful out there.
All those steams you mentioned are overgrow and the switchbacks are dangerous.
Good luck
