Safety First / Surfer drowns at Linda Mar
« on: November 10, 2022, 03:43:55 PM »
Happened his past Sunday.  Lindy surf report has been all over the place.  Be careful out there,  nothing wrong with making the call to get pancakes at Breakers.

Found this video about Pacific halibut habitat.  A few other gems on the channel.  The number of lings is insane in this video, wherever this is.

Recipes / Recipe- Fish Head Salad
« on: August 17, 2021, 12:12:03 PM »
I was lucky enough to have 3 big fish heads and wanted to make something different. Happy with the result and wanted to share.  I used Ling and Hali heads but I think Cab/RF/ling would be best due to the additional fat (tenderness) in the meat.  Inspiration and flavor profile is Texas “mix a bunch of canned stuff together” and North African.
Enjoy!

Part 1
1 cup Mayo
2 tsp paprika
1 Tbsp smoked paprika
Cayenne pepper
Harissa paste- if you can find it use it!
Salt
Black pepper
2 Tbsp caper- rough chop
1 lemon juice

Part 2
1/3 cup dill pickles- rough chop
1/4 cup peperoncini- rough chop
1/2 cup castelvetrano olives- rough chop
4 egg hard boiled- rough chop
3 medium Yukon gold potato 1” dice- boil until tender and chill
1 cup carrot 1/2” dice- steamed to tender-chilled
1 cup celery 1/4” dice

Part 3
1.5 lb. Fish head/collar meat, boiled then picked

Mix part 1 together well, add part 2 mix to coat well,  check seasoning then add fish and gently mix to coat. We like to keep the fish in chunks as big as possible.

This one is better the next day after the flavors have a chance to get to know each other.

Serve on Safeway’s finest box ‘o lettuce with grilled bread.

Safety First / Storms and seafloor
« on: January 21, 2021, 04:36:40 PM »
Learnt a lesson today!
Was at Rockaway yesterday looking at the flat surf and after seeing the conditions were similar today, dropped a couple pots in the evening for an overnight soak.
I launched today, got my pots (half dozen keepers) paused on the way in to let a surfer get out of the way in a spot I would usually stow the drive and switch to paddle but waves started breaking 5 feet  in front of me as he pushed by.  I was in a pickle, so I tried to push through but got turnt by the next wave, flipped, and got a good gulp of sea water. I was able to get the boat right side up and got on top then made it to shore in one piece (most important). The traps didn't stay on the boat by design, I had the ropes free and buoys loose so they could do their job. The surfer grabbed my PVC holder which was awesome. Big thanks to a guy on a Zodiac who was able to pull up one of the pots.
After warming back up and reflecting on what I did right and where I went wrong. First and foremost I thought about Tedski asking if I practiced self-rescue in HMB harbor (Thank you sir, lucky I did).  I'm lucky I took the advice about managing what to keep on a leash (paddle, drive) and what not to (crab traps, pot holders), otherwise I might have been tangled and wouldn't have been able to move let alone get the yak right side up. I was dressed for immersion and had a knife on my PFD.
I think the recent weather has changed the seafloor and all the usual staging areas and launch/landing spots of the past didn't work. Pausing where I did was a mistake. As I was getting on the boat I was being shoved into a HUGE set of rocks recently exposed by the storms on and would have ended up there if I didn't get back on the boat as quickly as I did. I should have recognized this and been more cautious/delayed/called off my launch.
With the golden advice of 2 out of 3: 1. Knowledge of area/ 2. Trustworthy buddy/ 3. Perfect conditions I would only add that recent knowledge of the area above and below the water is really what is needed.
My overconfidence of a beach I visit multiple times a week could have cost me my life today. Fortunately I listen to people who know more than I do, and will continue to do so. Thank you very much sharing what you know.

General Talk / Winter fishing?
« on: December 17, 2020, 11:23:46 AM »
It's my first winter fishing on the kayak for me.
Just curious what do y'all do when RGC is closed? Crabs? Try for Winter halibut? Go for freshwater? or just bicker here until April?

Craftsmen's Corner / Fixing a flat, Hobie Trax 2
« on: December 06, 2020, 09:08:09 AM »
Got a flat going to the launch at HMB yesterday.  After looking it up the suggested method of fixing is to gently melt and reseal the cut. Has anyone done this before and have any pointers?

For Sale / WTS NRS Freestyle boot size 11 brand new
« on: November 20, 2020, 03:54:09 PM »
Hey y’all,
Got a brand new pair of men’s size 11 NRS freestyle shoe.  Super comfortable and solid I just got the wrong size and don’t want to pay $25 to return it to the east coast because carbon (my fault for not shopping local). I payed $60 for them and because they are brand new (still have the cardboard inserts) I’m looking for $45.
Pick up or meet local in Pacifica, no delivery.

Thanks,
nick

General Talk / Coastside #2, Pacifica
« on: November 02, 2020, 02:19:50 PM »
Since the passing of Marque at Coastside a couple months ago, sunny Pacifica lost a gem of a local tackle shop.  The man was sharp, direct, and a fountain of knowledge.  He fixed my crappy poles that I’d drop on the rocks (before I got a kayak) too many times. I probably could have fixed it myself, but why?  It was the best reason to mull around in the shop and ask questions to an OG Pacifica angler. I know I’m not qualified to write a eulogy for the man so I won’t, but damn I learned a bunch listening to him and the folks at the shop and am grateful for it.
Posting this because as I check the store for updates (no Facebook for me) and they are looking for a buyer for the shop.  Figured I’d post it up here and maybe someone has the itch for their own shop I think they still have the inventory too if that can persuade you. Let me know and I’ll send you the contact.

1604 Francisco Blvd, Pacifica, CA 94044

Thanks,
Nick

Recipes / Cabezon Ceviche
« on: October 26, 2020, 03:38:57 PM »
It was beyond belief.
5, yes 5 fat Cabbies hooked by Tedski at HMB this past Saturday. Dom and I bore witness and cheered him on that sick streak.
He offered one to me under the stipulation that I share what I make with the forum so here it goes:

Leche de Tigre (aka ceviche juice)
4 each limes, juice
Jalapeno, small dice (Mild-remove seeds, Hot use a serrano seeds and all, Fire use a habanero)
1/2 TBSP Salt

Add
1 Fat fillet of Cabezon, 3/4" dice
- Combine all in a stainless bowl and mix to coat. Let this soak in the fridge for an hour to firm the fish, can be more or less based on your preference.

Garnish
4 small cucumber  3/4" dice
cherry tomatoes, cut in half
1 red onion, Cut in half, shaved thin, soaked in ice water 20 minutes then rinsed well, drip dry
Cilantro
Avocado

Mix Garnish into Fish/Leche de Tigre 5 minutes before serving, adjust seasoning.

Serve with sliced cabbage, tortilla chips, and your favorite beverage.  Better eaten in the sunshine with friends and music.

Thanks Tedski!
