I only use a game bag on the kayak and hang it overboard in between hauls.  I've never had not-clean crab, so I don't know if it's helping or not an issue in the first place.  Regarding crab being lively, they're cold blooded.  The whole point of putting them on ice (for me) is to make them not lively.  No tongs needed, no complicated bubblers or large volumes of water.  Either way, the crab splits in half when I smash it on the side of the bucket.

Happy Thanksgiving, NCKA!  I was able to sneak out to HMB on Wed morning to pick up a few crab for appetizers.

Then, Murphy's Law struck.  Oven decided to not work on Thanksgiving day!  Troubleshot it and found the bake relay gave up the ghost.  So, there I was... amidst food prep and the hustle and bustle of the day... desoldering relays from the oven control board to swap in the broil relay figuring it has been cycled a lot less and probably has more life in it.  It worked... we were able to use the oven all day.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Advice for keeping dungeness fresh

Dredging this one up to get advice.  Got 10 crab today, not enough time to cook them tonight.  Have them in about 20 gallons of seawater with an aerator going in an open 27gal black storage bin.  They seem happy and active, but what do you guys think?  I am hoping to cook them in the morning.  Should I suck it up and steam them tonight, or do you think they will be fine in the am?  The temp should stay between 50-60 all night.  Anyone do anything similar?

For just overnight, I keep it simple.  Bag of ice in the cooler, wet towel or burlap on top of that, crab on the towel, block of wood taped on the rim of the cooler to keep the door slightly ajar (a rolled up rag works just as well).

CA Regulations / Re: Crab Hoop Net Service Interval Regulation?
« on: November 17, 2023, 12:09:05 PM »
No change.. CCR 14 § 29.80(b)(3) still states:

It is unlawful to abandon or leave unchecked a hoop net for more than 2 hours. Any hoop net left unchecked for more than 2 hours shall be considered abandoned and may be seized by any person authorized to enforce these regulations.

Keep in mind "may" is the language used on seizure, not "shall."  This means that even if reported and responded to, the warden will have discretion on whether to seize gear or not.

By now, any bad entries that were cached in DNS servers should be purged and we should not be seeing any issues with the site redirecting to domain for sale or error pages.  If you are still seeing any issues intermittently, please update here.  (No, it's not lost on me that those who can't load the site can't read or post to this thread)

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Maker motivation. Greenland Paddle

That's going to be a fun project.  I recommend you prototype this on cheaper wood.  Get yourself a 2x8 of Doug Fir half the length of the desired paddle.  Prototype half of it on the cheaper wood and you'll have a reference for when you start making sawdust on the cedar.

Recipes / Re: Salmon Poke!!

I know this group is prone to making questionable decisions, so....
Anyone brave enough to use storebought salmon (not sushi grade, not frozen) for ceviche or poke?

I do.  Not necessarily store bought, but when I get local salmon from SeaForager, I often eat sashimi and poke with it.  I know it's not advisable.  I probably wouldn't do it with salmon that has spent time in the supply chain, though.

long time rider...currently own an '07 KTM 990 ADV...getting a little long in the tooth, but still rips.
had a Triumph 675, speedmaster, a couple XRs dirt bikes, and started my moto journey on an 82 Yam Virago barn bike.

Nice... those 990s are a gem.  I say they are still the best large displacement adv bike KTM made.  The 675 is a fantastic bike... the transmission is a bit annoying... not much difference between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th given the range of that motor.

My current stable includes the '17 Yamaha FJ-09, '16 KTM 390 Duke, and an '09 Suzuki DR650.  I've been getting an itch to add a grom to the stable, but we'll see.

Hope to see ya on the water or in the twisties or on the trails!

Sad thing though..I haven’t bought my Cali license for the year  …yes I know … I’m thinking there’s at least a Perch walk in my future..LOL

At least they have that 365-day license now so you're not blowin' money on a month.

Isn’t ocean whitefish what is used to make imitation crab?

As far as I know, pollock is used for most imitation crab.

Nice work Eddie!

Whitefish does really well smoked.  I often make up a quick whitefish salad to put on sourdough toast with some thinly sliced cuke.
