Heroes On the Water (HOW) / HOW Fishing Gear Flea Market?
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:53:45 AM »
Some questions and looking for thoughts/opinions

A friend of mine who helped start a Maryland HOW chapter also organizes a fishing gear flea market every year to raise money for the local HOW chapter.

Curious to know if this is something members/businesses here would be interested in or is already being done?

Thinking Shasta Ca and NorCal HOW could work together pick a central location - Sacramento Area?

1. $2 or $3 entry fee
2. $10-20 table/space rental
3. Table(s) with fishing gear donated by NCKA members to sell with all monies going to HOW
4. Maybe a Firehouse or some other facility that would let us use space for free
5. Volunteers needed to help, organize, set up, work the HOW tables, sell sodas, water, snacks, clean up
6. Help with getting word out, selling tables etc.

Please let me know what you think and would you attend something like this and/or rent a table.

2nd question, are there any businesses here who wouldn't mind if Shasta CA HOW takes part in something they already sponsor similar to this? Would still ask NCKA members for donations of equipment to sell. I know there have been efforts at some of the outdoor shows in past but not sure if that is flea market type stuff?

Thanks,

I have tried kayaking local lake a couple times this year thinking I would get the first fish but no luck so tried the Sacrament River today before level comes up and turns muddy from rains expected this week.

Took two rods with me, one had orange glo bug and a trailing fly second set up with blue/silver kastmaster. It was raining so couldn't really tell how active river was until I waded out, flow is so low can walk about half way across. Started with the glo bug but as soon as I got out saw small silver minnows jumping everywhere, some kind of fly hatch happening I did try the glo bug three or four times since I was already there with no hits, went back to shore grabbed the rod with kastmaster thinking there was bigger fish underneath and was right.  Let the kastmaster bounce on bottom, gave reel a couple turns and bounce again. Seemed to always get strikes at about 45 degree angle to flow.

Caught four in little over an hour, missed two or three more #1 pic is first fish of 2016, second pic is largest I caught. Nothing like fishing in the rain.

Heroes On the Water (HOW) / Shasta HOW Event Feb. 7
« on: December 15, 2015, 07:58:09 AM »
Yesterday I received a request from Redding VA to plan a HOW trip in Jan or Feb for 6 veterans with the possibility of additional/larger events later in the year.

The first group has asked if we can go on a Sunday, it will probably be Lake Shasta.

Please let us know what Sundays in Jan-Feb you are available to assist.

How does Dec 10th or 11th sound for a Redding NCKA holiday get together? Keep it simple, pizza?

Once we get an idea of how many might attend can find a place, possibly Old Millhouse Deli.

Heroes On the Water (HOW) / HOW Giving Day
« on: September 17, 2015, 02:26:21 PM »
Today there is nationwide effort for donations and a contest between the 36 HOW chapters. If you have thought about giving some money to your local chapter today would be a good day. You can donate at HOW web site, be sure to note which chapter you are donating for.  If funds are given for a particular chapter it is credited to that chapters account to help purchase kayaks, kayak trailers, fishing gear, food and swag for events.

Here is link: http://heroesonthewater.org/

And here is copy of e-mail I just received, would be good to see one of the CA chapters on the board.

Hey All,

The must be some sort of tornado funneling money to the Oklahoma chapter because they are pulling farther ahead.

Current Rankings!

1. NE Oklahoma
2. NE Florida
3. Central Florida
4T. Nwest Chapter and SE Texas
5. SW Louisiana

Keep up the good work and keep pushing to get more donations before the end of the day!
