Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Cambria 5-16
« on: May 16, 2010, 05:29:26 PM »
Another good day of fishing off Cambria.  The wind and swells died down today making for a easy paddle.  I caught and released 7 short lings before finally landing a keeper, which with lots of small gophers and a few decent bolina, kept the action hot all morning.  It's fish tacos for dinner!

Had a great early morning outing in Cambria today.  OTW before 6:00AM to beat the wind, and off by 10:00 as the wind was starting to pick up, with a few good meals in hand.  Released two underlings and a bunch of small gophers.  I had the camera all set up in it's dry case and left it on the front seat of the truck, or I would have had some OTW shots as well.

If anyone is planning on going out for rock fish in SLO County this Sunday and could use some company, please let me know.  The ocean conditions look great for Sunday!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / SLO County Sunday 9-6-09
« on: September 03, 2009, 10:15:15 PM »
I'm planning to go out on Sunday, 9-6-09, probably from Leffingwell Landing in Cambria.  The marine forecast is looking pretty nice so far.   :fishing2   Let me know if you are interested.

Arrived at Leffingwell about 7:00 with my pal Jeff, started paddling out and found ourselves in the middle of a pod of dolphins just under 200 yards off the shore.  We had to stop and just enjoy watching them for a while.  I have heard dolphins are a good omen, and now I'm a believer.  The fishing was a little slow with a few decent blues, some mini-gophers (about 3" long, and almost a s big as the jig I was using), and one nice ling.  When the ling hit it just inhaled the jig and laid there.  I thought I was hung up on kelp or rocks and gave the line couple of sharp tugs to try and break loose, and this "rock" started stripping line off my reel.  The ling was 33" long and weighed 14.5 pounds.

My first time out in the yak this season and man did that feel great!  Met up with JK at Leffingwell in Cambria this morning for a short round of rock fishing.  A bit of a bump and a fast drift this morning, but managed to catch a 27" ling, a 22" underling, and 5 blues.  The underling and 3 of the blues went back to grow up some more.  The keepers will make for a couple of great meals.   :smt004

Recipes / The Best Fish Marinade I've Tasted
« on: May 07, 2009, 07:44:48 PM »
I have been using this marinade for many years now, usually with salmon, steelhead or albacore, but I caught a few fish yesterday (non yak) including a couple of 3 lb. vermilion and a mix of coppers, olives, and gophers, and wanted to grill one of the reds whole.  I would have to say this is the best all around fish marinade I have tasted.

Ingredients:
Salmon, Steelhead fillets (skin on), albacore loins, or whole rock fish (approximately 3 lbs)
1/3 cup Olive Oil
1/3 cup Brown Sugar
1/2 cup Teriyaki Sauce
2 Shallots of 1 Small Onion Diced Fine
6 Minced Garlic Cloves
1/2 Stalk of Celery Diced Fine
2 Tablespoons of Grated Fresh Ginger
Juice & Zest of 1 Lime
1/4 to 1/2 cup Tequila
Directions:
Heat oil in a small sauce pan, add onion or shallot & celery and cook on low medium heat until softened (3 to 5 minutes), add minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute.   Add the brown sugar, teriyaki sauce, ginger and cook until the sugar is completely dissolved.  Add the lime juice and zest and remove from heat and allow to cool completely (refrigerate or cool in ice water).  Cut 4 to 5 scores through the skin if using whole fish.  Add the tequila and marinate fish for 2 to 3 hours.  Grill fish until done but not overcooked.  The whole fish cooked for about 12 minutes per side.  Reheat the marinade thoroughly and spoon over fish portions and cooked rice.  Enjoy! :beer3

Here's a great recipe for rock fish with a South of the border flair.  This is one of my favorite rock fish recipes.
Ingredients needed:
•   1/4 cup Spanish olive oil
•   2 cups chopped yellow onions
•   Salt
•   Freshly ground black pepper
•   2 tablespoons chopped garlic
•   3 fresh jalapenos, stemmed, seeded and finely chopped (more or less to taste)
•   1 1/2 cups fresh tomatoes, seeded and chopped (canned tomatoes will work too)
•   1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
•   18 large capers
•   18 large green olives, pitted
•   2 bay leaves
•   6 red rock fish fillets, about 6 ounces each
•   3 tablespoons fine dried bread crumbs (reduce or omit for wetter sauce)
•   3 cups cooked long-grain white rice, warm
•   1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves
•   6 wedges fresh lime

In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the oil. When the oil is hot, add the onions. Season with salt and pepper. Sauté until lightly caramelized, about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and continue to cook for 1 minute. Stir in the jalapenos, tomatoes, parsley, capers, olives and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and continue to cook for 15 minutes. Season both sides of the fillets with salt and pepper. Lay the fillets in the sauce, covering each fillet completely with the sauce. Cover and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until the fillets start to flake. Remove the fish and place in the center of each serving plate. Sprinkle the sauce with the bread crumbs and continue to cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and spoon over the fish. Serve the fish with the rice. Garnish with cilantro and lime wedges.

I'm getting anxious to get wet and catch some rock fish and planning to launch a few miles North of Piedras Blancas Lighthouse on Friday 5/1 or Saturday 5/2, weather and waves permitting.  It's a moderate trek to get to the water here.  Who's ready to wet a line?
