AOTY / AOTY top 3 link gone for good?
« on: October 22, 2020, 12:23:38 PM »
Hey guys,

Just wondering if the top 3 species link is gone for good or if there's a chance it might be back when you re-build the database for 2021? That's one of my favorite things to check out since you can quickly see the 3 "BIGS" from each species. And when you aren't catching any big fish (me), it's fun to see other folks toads. Anyway, just wanted to mention it since it was a fun option to have available.

Thanks,

Scott

Okay, just saw on FB the free registration might happen today. Very short window to register. From post:

Tentatively it is scheduled to start at 1pm and end around 2pm Central Time (UTC -06:00) on today Friday Jan 16th.

I have to head to work. Can you guys take a look and see if you are seeing the same thing? I'll probably miss it and just help support ($) the site. Good luck.

Well, I didn't do much reporting last year, so this year I'm going to try and do more. Unfortunately no fish porn, but for guys heading out this way it might save you some gas. Unless you just want to do some ice fishing?

Last Saturday I headed out to Stampede to try and get an early kok or mac and there was still a bit of snow/ ice on the road in the shady areas. It got a bit worse as I got closer and when I crossed the dam I could see a lot of ice out there    :smt009. As of last Saturday, there wasn't any at the dam, but now, who knows? I made it to the ramp and could see there was ice out about 1/3 into the lake. After checking it out, it was pretty solid. Didn't see a safe way to launch or get back in. I saw a frozen Rapala or trophy stick in the water and I walked out a few feet for a pic, but there was cracking so I headed back. So overall, last week I'd say it was about 1/2 froze.

This Saturday, I was heading back from Cali and took the turn off for Stampede and stopped at Boca. Last week it had some open areas, but looked fully froze this week. There was even some ice fishing going on. Decided to pass on going the rest of the way to Stampede thinking it had to be worse.

Still wanting to kayak fish, I decided today to head north and try Davis. On the way I stopped to take a picture of some deer. Looking at pictures now, I'm thinking may be antelope? I get to Davis and it's fully froze. At Honker Cove it actually looks pretty thick. Drove up to Mallard Cove and it was thinner, but froze. Oh well, wasn't meant to be. Heading home I said what the hell, let's check out Frenchman lake. Dam area and all around the lake are froze, with about 1/3 in the middle open. While there I decided to be useful and do my first trash cleanup of the year. Also cleared some nasty rocks that were in the road just after a blind cure. That wouldn't have been a fun day for someone.

Wish I had fish porn, but it was still fun to get out and explore a bit on some nice days. I guess I'll half to wait a few more weeks for trout.

My buddy Shirk (Polarcat) invited me down to San Diego for some fishing and I was definitely in. We were only going to have about two and a half days to fish, so we planned on one day to go for rockfish/other big fish, one day for bay bass and the half day we planned to surf fish. Since I had never fished in SD, I was pretty excited to catch anything.

Day 1 we launched out of Mariner's Cove by Mission Bay Park in Mission Bay. We paddled out of the channel and headed south to Sunset Cliffs. What struck me right away was how chilly it was. With the fog and cold weather I thought I was still in NCAL. Okay, it wasn't that cold, but about 10 degrees colder than normal. We fished all the way out the channel, but didn't catch anything. As soon as we rounded the corner we started to smell something foul. It smelled marine in nature, but extremely nasty. Then I saw the brown water (a cross between chocolate milk and diarrhea) and I had my first "taste" of the red tide. We paddled through it, worked our way to Sunset Cliffs and found the kelp. As I fished I felt worse and worse and I knew I was getting sea sick. After about an 1.5 hours Shirk asked me how I felt and he let me know he was also feeling sick. This surprised me because he never gets sea sick. We hung in there for about 4 hours and then had to head in. I couldn't get anything to bite, Shirk got a rockfish and a barred sand bass. It was disappointing, but we had a good paddle and I could see how cool this area would be if we weren't fighting the stinky tide. Next time.

Day 2 We decided we weren't heading out into the crap anymore and decided to have fun with bay bass. So we launched from the Glorietta Bay launch ramp in San Diego Bay and fished towards and past the Coronado Bridge. This was a great choice because we had a fantastic day. We tried a few different swim baits, but the only one that really worked for us was what our buddy JT sarcastically calls the "Pink Lady." All areas produced, but working the grass mats and the docks was the most productive. Shirk caught the most fish slaying the spotted bass and pulling in the biggest at just over 14." I didn't get quite so many spots, but I added a few different fish that kept it exciting. We ended up finishing just before dark after about 8 hours on the water. If you find yourselves in SD and want to have a fun day, I suggest this area with light gear, it's a blast.

Day 3 was a short session of surf fishing on South Mission Beach. We had some things come up so we only had about 2 hours of surf fishing. We also hit the low tide and that didn't help us at all. We did manage to catch about 10 barred surfperch and I lucked out with another guitarfish. Our biggest SP was about 11". Unfortunately with the cold weather we didn't have the usual "visuals" you have at a SD beach, but a few brave girls were out in bikinis and that made the trip interesting. Overall, a fun day on the beach and a good end to my trip.

I learned a lot this trip and next time I'm definitely going to get out there and finally get my sheepshead I've been dreaming about. We did more fishing than picture taking, but here's a few pics from our trip.
