General Talk / MERGED - Shark attack on yak 3/18- Monterey Bay
« on: March 19, 2017, 10:19:59 AM »
copied from another forum, FYI - sorry if its a duplicate

It was a bit past 4:30 Saturday afternoon. I was in my kayak. I had paddledfrom the Breakwater ramp to Shell St PG and was on my way back. I was hitoff the end of San Carlos Beach about 100 yards or so off the Monterey Bay Inn- probably over Metridium. So, I was near the end of a great paddle - Iencountered dolphins off Point Cabrillo and a large group of very young harborseals close in to Hopkins Station.

Suddenly, I heard a loud Bang as my kayak and I flew into the air. I landedoutside my boat, look back to it and to my horror saw a large great white sharkno more than three feet away had my kayak in its mouth. I could clearly seeit's 2-inch teeth and it's black eye that looked lifeless.

I scrambled away from my boat as fast as I could and started kicking towardsshore - really wishing that I was wearing fins! In between yelling "No GodNo" I was shocked at how many thoughts about how to survive ran through myhead - don't splash, don't let your legs hang down, keep your eyes on the sharkand swim away, don't act like a panicked seal. After Five minutes, maybe fiveyears - it was hard to tell, I pulled out my Nautilus Lifeline and called in amayday to the coast guard. They were having trouble hearing me. I spotteda sail boat and started frantically waving to them with my right arm as Ioperated the radio with my left hand.

While this was going on, the shark was using my boat as a chew toy. I saw itspin with the boat at least three times. It started pushing the boat towards meand then left the boat and headed for me. Suddenly it dove. I put my face inthe water to see if it was under me, but I couldn't see anything.

I looked up and saw the sail boat approaching me. After some very quickexplanations I said that I needed to get into the small boat. There was noladder or transom. I had been in the water for about twenty minutes. I waswearing a 3-mil, but had forgotten my booties and was bear foot. My feet werenumb and I was running on nothing but adrenaline. I could not get up into theboat or stand up on their motor. I asked them to call 911 and ask for coastguard assistance.

The coast guard showed up 5 minutes later and pulled me into their boat. Allmy gear was floating and was recovered. They took me back to the Breakwater..

In the parking lot I spoke with the people from the sailboat who came to myrescue. They were a young family who attended NPS. They were taking their youngdaughter out on her first sail. According to them, the shark was as big as myboat. I have a 14-ft kayak. Bite marks show that it had the whole girthof the boat in its mouth. My boat is covered with bite marks from end toend with multiple punctures. People told me that they could see the sharkslapping the surface of the water with its fins as it mauled my boat.

I had always thought that great whites hit a target to test it and thenbacked off. This was a prolonged attack on the surface.

I've just gotten back from a steak dinner with Scott and Nancy and a verygood bottle of wine donated by their neighbor. That's why we didn't make it toMember Night at the aquarium. I'm still not sure if I will sleep tonight,or want to try. I suspect that I just joined a very small club - one I neverwanted to join!

General Talk / Some pots in bad spots - HMB crabbing - move 'em or lose 'em
« on: November 10, 2012, 05:51:08 PM »
There are several pots too close to the HMB entrance.  I assume its one of us.

Khanh wrapped somebody's gear (yellow line) oround his prop at the entrance and had to cut it loose so you are down a pot.  http://forums.coastsidefishingclub.com/showthread.php?33155-line-weight-is-cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a couple of photos of floats one was a white float with 'BEAL' written on it and it had a yellow smaller float on it as a tandem.  A totally unnecessary rig on a kayak.

A) it's frickin dangerous as it was a jackass day on the outside.  Somebody loses power in the jaws with a good swell running and it a lost boat and maybe lives.

B) its inconsiderate and give us all a bad name

Get them moved (even if you have to hop on a power boat) as they aren't likely to survive long.  Someone will cut then off out of general principle.

General Talk / Cleaning up the Fjord Queen off the rocks at Pillar Point
« on: October 28, 2012, 10:12:26 PM »
The Fjord Queen is on the rocks at Pillar Point under the radar dome.  It's part of Fitzgerald Marine preserve and an MPA.

She'a wooden hull and the grounding broke her back.  Capt. Barry Day is looking at a big (guesstimate mid 6 figures) bill from the agencies to clean it up.  But they are giving him time to get it done himself.

This is from my post on Coastside after yesterdays efforts.  There will be another one in a couple of weeks on the next big minus tide.  We could use more help on that day.  I'll keep you posted.

Had to wait until the game was over to get my post in. Here's a few photos from Saturday's clan up effort.

Here she is shortly after grounding:

Here's a shot of her from the hill this morning. The sea has been breaking her down.  The tide was in. Debris scattered from here up the beach about 1/2 mile.

Several of our stalwarts have chimed in already but Mikeys Connelly and Velasquez were there too:

I got to man a chain saw most of the day . It was sad to get started on the transom which had broken loose and washed up right side up. I asked Barry if he wanted the name cut out but he said 'no'.

Before:

After:

A lot of work done with the chopsaw. Several disks used to cut up the steel fuel tank:

Also had a couple of plywood 'sleds' to move the collected piles:

Here the skipper himself making little ones out of big ones so we could get it up the hill:

About 50 people from their church group rolled in about 11:30. They headed down the hill, helped gather debris then formed a human chain to bucket brigade the pieces up the hill to the truck and trailer. They wrapped up at about 1:30 after moving about a ton of stuff up the trail. They were life savers.

The two Fitzgerald Marine Preserve rangers were very impressed with how clean things were when we were done.

On Sunday there were some pots dropped right at the harbor mouth.  Its getting attibuted to kayakers who were out Sunday.

I know one skipper who had one with floating line hang up on his outddrive in the entrance Sunday.  He cut it loose quickly so someone lost a pot.  Luckily it didn't end up with a power boat on the rocks.

The quotes on the Coastside Fishing Club site thread were things like: Yes, yesterday the kayakers were hanging out in line between the green can and the jaws. Get a clue guys-- you're in the path of something that can kill you if the captain doesn't see you.

I know most of our people are too well versed on safety and etiquette to do something like this but if you are new to crabbing please make sure you are well clear of the entrance.  When the swell is running, like it was on Sunday, the power boats go well inshore to the South and come back out to the entrance so they are quartering into the swell and not running down it trying to surf in on a left hand break.

While it usually looks calm Pillar Point can be a killer.  It was only two years ago we lost two experienced watermen when the Good Guys rolled just outside the jaws.  There's a lot of names on the plaque across from the Harbormaster's office.  Don't contribute to adding the next ones.

General Talk / Cart question
« on: June 02, 2011, 10:46:20 PM »
My old cart that was stock with my 2005 Hobie Outback (that goes in the scupper holes) bit the dust at GMS.  Time for a replacement.

It had the cheesy wheels so its time for the Wheeleez upgrade.  Should I get the Hobie Trax so I still have the convenience of mounting via the scupper holes or go with the standard cart and strap it on?

I've heard the stories of the Hobie carts cracking the hull inside the scupper but I've never seen any wear and tear.  It sure is convenient but not versatile when it comes to the other two kayaks and the canoe.

What is the collective wisdom of this NCKA brethren and sistren?

Well actually it's Harwich on nearby Cape Cod where we are on vacation.  Yak fishing after dinner on the pond is a family favorite.

My son, daughter and niece get the yaks relegating my brother and me to the canoe.  Targets are CPR largemouth, smallies, white perch and pickerel.  All on ultralight gear with 4 lb test to keep it sporting.

Well I thought I started it off ok but really wanted to show that I was flying the NCKA colors on the Cape.

Then my daughter ties into something that is towing her 90 lb frame around in her 10 foot Wilderness Pungo.  We all gave her room until it settles down.  Here is a shot of her prize that was the largest kayak fish of the holiday.

Here is her non yak fish that was also the largest fish of the vacation period.  Charter skipper Bruce Peters (former local S.F. deckie) is helping to hold the fish.

The really intersting thing is that we were using butterfly jigs to pull them off the bottom from under the bait balls.  THis fish was not hooked but managed to get the jig jammed in its mouth so it was an easy release once we unwedged it.

General Talk / Elkhorn Slough revisited
« on: February 16, 2010, 11:04:16 PM »
I took my new (to me) Outback for a pedal on Valentine's day.  Luckily my wife likes to get out and she wanted a family paddle for 2/14.  She and I and our 12 yr old twins.

It has been several years since we were down there.  Great place for kids.

There were more otters than I can remember that started as a big raft of about 15-20 males near the launch ramp and then smaller groups and then singles all the way up to Kirby's (about 4.5 miles) and back.

Sea lions now own the dock by the restaurant, It was covered with them from end to end including some really big bulls.  The harbor seals were hauld out on the East side of the Hwy 1 bridge and a little further up.

Probably 20 different water and shore bird species sighted as well.

Great day.  I would recommend it to those of you with youn 'uns.

The new/old Outback did fine although it did squeak some when I towed my son in his Scrambler for about a mile so he could take a breather.

Now what is the 1st mod and wher should I drill those holes?
