General Fishing Tips / Re: Hobie Outback Sailing?
« on: August 09, 2021, 11:09:03 PM »
Just curious if anybody sails their Outback? I had a nice following breeze this weekend on the hour+ pedal back to the launch and though it’d be nice to catch some wind and save my legs. I feel it might be one of those thing where conditions rarely line up for it to be practical but I wanted to get your opinions.
Yup with no amas, however I do a couple things to help.  One, I never cleat the main.  I'm always ready to dump it if a big gust hits.  Two, I throw my leg on the windward gunnel to help stabilize the force.  I also add another pulley up front, so I pull to sheet in (like a sailboat or AI).

General Fishing Tips / Re: Santa Barbara from the beach?
« on: June 07, 2021, 11:42:51 AM »
Will be in SB next week for a few days, won't be able to bring the yak but wondered if it's worth while to bring some gear and fish from the beach? Anyone have experience?

Thanks!
I tried the beach area on both sides of the wharf downtown for butts last June, with no luck.  Saw guys catching corbina and sandbass though soaking bait.  You could always hop on the Stardust too.

Looking forward to going orange now...

They only have red and "sand" in gore-tex. I reluctantly went for the red as it's more visible. But, the thing I don't like is that it'll make me look like those expendable guys in the landing party on Star Trek...

I talked to Kokatat today and...

The good news:
Kokatat is going to warranty my drysuit, and I'll get a brand new SuperNova Angler gore-tex.

The bad news:
That model is out of stock, and they don't expect to have any more for 12 to 14 weeks.

Looks like I'll have to bring my FJ wetsuit out of retirement...
Hahaha, I waited too long to decide and now it's OOS.  I opted for the same SuperNova Hydrus 3.0 again.  I figured if it fails again, it's their material not Gore-tex, and would be easier to warranty in the future.  Besides, I don't plan to use it much, so why upgrade  :smt002

General Talk / Re: lowrance power troubles
« on: March 18, 2021, 11:39:40 PM »
When the issue cropped up it was running for probably 15 -20 minutes before it kicked off. Since then it will only run for a few minutes at most before shutting off. Once it does shut down it takes a while before it will start back up or even respond to the power button. Just now it ran for about two minutes and shut off and then won't get past the start up screen before turning off.

Brad
wasn't there a post about disconnecting the card reader cable (can't remember the details) to get it to work?  i actually did that, but it didn't help my issue since it was the cable.  you are welcome to plug it into my yak if you are ever in the southbay.  oh, i also have a spare cable i took off the boat recently that you can test with too.

fwiw,  i was ready to throw away my hook 5 and go shopping, but ended up cleaning the red connector on the kayak side.  i used corrosion x, a pick, and q-tips to clean out the inside wall of the contacts.  once i did that, it fired right up and continued to work!
