Fines up to $50,000. It would be nice if poaching fines here in California had these kind of teeth.

These are all aimed at trophy poaching.

We are doing oysters again on Friday night.  The local lighthouse committee in shelter cove will be offering pulled pork sandwiches for sale at the lighthouse, an easy walk from the campground.  There will be grills available for grilling your oysters at campsite 6 and environs, and a gear swap will be located there as well.  It is directly across from the campground patio.

Kumomoto oysters are $7.75 $8.50/dz.
Pacifics will be about $1 to $1.50 each.  I will get final pricing the week of the event.

Please post your order by the dozen for kumos and each for pacifics.  I will collect on Friday night.

Please place your order by Monday May 15 at 9pm.

The old threads here are informative, but is there anything new on the home security front?  I never followed through on getting a new security system, but my neighborhood has seen a new rash of thefts.  I'm looking for a security system that does the following:

* Wireless cameras, battery operated, reasonably long life or solar powered.
* wifi connected through my home router
* On site recording to secure DVR or hard drive
* night vision
* motion detection
* 3mp or better cameras
* 4 cameras, with ability to expand number of cameras
* push notification to iPhone for activity at unusual hour on street camera, all hours in the alley
* under $1,000

Does such an animal exist?  I'll hardwire if I have to but its 2017 and all of this seems like it should be possible.

I don't need to know how to deal with the tweekers, only to catch them on camera and be alerted in real time.  Property crimes are out of control in my neighborhood right now.

Santa Cruz / Stand up bar DIY project, ideas welcome.
« on: February 26, 2017, 08:14:11 PM »
I'm spending the next 2-3 weeks modding my G2 and I need a stand up bar.  Talking with baitman earlier I think I'm going to mount it forward of the cockpit on the gunwales rather than put it on the rails.  I don't want the mounts to interfere with the wheeleze wheel and Ideally the bar would fold away, although using pins to hold it and remove it is an option also.

Has anybody installed one?  Used a premanufactured one and had good results?  I'm open but need to move soon, I want it done by weekend of March 18 and I still need to do all the electrical install, which is first up.

I've googled around and got some ideas, I'd love to hear what you guys have done.  I'll update this thread with progress and pics.

Wanted To Buy / WTB: Backpacking trout spinning rod
« on: February 23, 2017, 06:31:42 PM »
I'm on a rod buying mission after breaking two of them in the last 5 days.  One of the rods I broke was a small, inexpensive telescoping backpacking rod that I'd broken once before and Sasquatch resurrected for another season but it's given up now.

What are you guys using for backpacking rods these days?  Not looking to break the bank, something with light action that will go with a shimano sedona 2000 for flipping lures in the marbles and trinity alps.

Something that is light, compact, and durable would be great.  Telescoping or a 4 piece?  I had an old 6 piece Eagle Claw once that I didn't like but that was like early 90s or so, but i'm assuming that backcountry spinning rods have come a long way since then.

Thanks.

This article is troubling, looks like a developing story:

http://www.sacbee.com/news/state/california/water-and-drought/article131743014.html

"At the fish hatchery just below the dam – one of a handful the state counts on to sustain its $1.4 billion commercial and recreational fishing industries – 4 million salmon were being trucked to holding ponds adjacent to the nearby Thermalito complex, a system of downstream reservoirs. Those ponds would be safe from the cloudy water conditions, said Morse.

That represents just half the baby fish at the hatchery. Morse said the Thermalito facility can’t accommodate all the fish at risk, so more than 4 million will remain in the hatchery while filtration experts try to devise a solution.

Each year the Feather River Hatchery releases 7 million baby salmon into the Central Valley’s waterways. Last March, state officials estimated that fish raised in the Feather River accounted for 63 percent and 76 percent of the state’s recreational and commercial ocean catches, respectively.

“The loss of hatchery-produced salmon from Feather River Hatchery would be a major blow to salmon fishermen in California,” said John McManus, executive director of the Golden Gate Salmon Association.

At the hatchery Thursday, workers waded waist-deep through concrete holding ponds filled with water the color of chocolate milk. They used screens to push baby fish toward tanker trucks that would transport them a few miles southwest to Thermalito."

Does anyone have any better information as to what is going on?

CA Regulations / California Campfire Permits available free online
« on: January 13, 2017, 08:07:49 AM »
Campfire permits are free and required in a lot of the state's public lands for overnight camping, backpacking, or having any sort of fire including propane stoves.

Every year around the beginning of January, I would trudge down to the fire department or forest service office to get a permit. Not any more though!  They are available online for free.

http://www.preventwildfireca.org/Campfire-Permit/

I'm probably the last one to know this, I just found out last year from a ranger in the Russian Wilderness. She sort of chuckled at my permit being the old yellow slip of paper issued at the fire agency. At least they are still available there if you need one and don't have access to internet or a printer at the time you need one.

General Talk / Recommend a bluetooth wireless neckband for iPhone 7
« on: January 10, 2017, 08:11:51 PM »
I want one, I want to use it in the salt with my iPhone safely in the dry bag.  They run anywhere from $15 to $eleventy bajillion.  Anyone have any luck with these while fishing?  Comfort is more important than durability because I can always replace them when they corrode/wear out.

I was looking at these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015IEW1AY?ref_=ams_ad_dp_asin_1

Amazon #1 best seller and only $25.

There's a bunch more on amazon in the $30-$35 range but I have no experience with them and no basis for comparison.

Appreciate any and all recs.  Thanks.

General Talk / Some discouraging news on the domoic acid front, Fall 2016
« on: September 26, 2016, 01:40:56 PM »
This does not bode particularly well for the upcoming crab season, at least from Mendocino north.

First, Oregon has closed razor clams and mussels along its entire coast due to domoic acid.  It had been closed from Florence south until this news yesterday.

http://odanews.wpengine.com/news-release-entire-oregon-coast-closed-to-razor-clam-and-mussel-harvesting/

Crabs in California have been tested all summer and one of six tested at elevated levels at both Crescent City and Usal this month.  A single crab over the limit prevented us from reopening for several weeks up this way last year and I'd expect no tolerance for a single crab over this year as we go along.

https://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/Documents/fdbFrSSda76.pdf

Frustrating.

It's been a few years but I want to cure some lingcod skins and I really would like to retain the blue skin color after curing.  There is scant information online.  Kirk at MFN has a blog post that says it might not be possible.  A search here yielded not much.

Anybody have any ideas?

Fish ID sub-forum / Irongate sunfish ID (ID'd as Green Sunfish)
« on: July 02, 2016, 12:47:49 PM »

Like a bluegill but with orange tipped fins and tail. The mouth is quite a bit larger than a bluegill too.

Kids caught half a dozen of them, a few dozen bluegill and redears, a couple yellow perch and two spotted bass. Wondering what the mystery fish is.

43
A family friendly yellow perch fishing day, no license needed. We will be on the south side 2 miles from the hatchery, fish fry on site. My family and Sasquatch family in so far, no kayak or fishing license needed for this far north hookup.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / yakattack might bolt problem
« on: May 13, 2016, 05:45:35 PM »
I've set up a downrigger on my kayak.  I want it on my left, with the rod on a ram mount on a gear track on my right.  THe problem is when the downrigger pulls on the rod, it torques the ram ball and unscrews the ball, moving the rod.

Can anybody think of a quick fix?

The thing I'd like is a bolt with a left hand thread, but I haven't found such an animal.  WIth a left hand thread the torque would simply tighten down, so it would not move so long as I had it already sufficiently torqued down.

This problem also happens when I run a rod without the downrigger.  If I run it off the left side across the yak, it's fine.  Again, it just torques the bolt tighter and isn't an issue.  I don't want to set up my rod on that way though, I want to run it the other way.

DO you guys have any ideas?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / QRAS setup questions
« on: May 13, 2016, 08:46:28 AM »
Installing a QRAS, mostly for use springer fishing on the Klamath and points north.  So swift current and plenty of debris potential.

I've read Tote's tutorial and I have some more questions.

I's there a reason to add an eye pad instead of attaching a carabiner to the line attaching the t handle at the rudder end on my revo 13?  Will this interfere with rudder operation?  Will I even want to have the rudder deployed when sitting on anchor or recovering the anchor line?

I haven't drilled any holes for this yet, probably will be drilling tomorrow.

Won't the cord winder just be something that catches more debris?  They break easily too ime. Does anyone have a better solution than a cord winder?

Why a bungee loop?  paracord should work fine here, no?

Instead of a loop at the end of the rope attached to the float - the one that the yellow floating line runs through - what about a brass or stainless ring?  Less prone to catching on something I'd think, thoughts?

I'm sure i'll have more questions.  Thanks.
