No PFDs and they should have stayed home.  My jaw was dropping!

That looks very exciting, but I don't think I'll do it w/o PFD and helmet... and a rescue team readily available.

looks a bit like Manresa on a bad day :smt044

I love those vids. You can tell that getting swamped and washed back to the sand a few times is just part of launching for them. The fishing must be great to punch through all of that soup.

...but yeah, from my own experience getting schooled by big beachbreak surf, I'd go with a helmet & PFD for sure.

Those Durban boys are known to have more muscle than grey matter.
I'm not advocating this to most yak fishers, but a pfd can be a pita in surf like that.

Yeah, I think I don't surf swim enough to launch in that stuff. I'd need months of body surf training. You can see how a PFD would set you up like a cork to be pounded over & over.

I would hope so! :smt044  Paddling back in with 50+lbs of fish would be interesting too. Despite it being beyond my current capability :smt002, I still love the vids.

Dang, all that work and back to the beach.  Man you sure would have to be in good shape to be able to pull that off.

Great clip...

I would call that insanity, doing the same thing, over and over again, and expecting to get dif results! do you think they have pool noodles stuffed in there.

I'm sure those guys were also surfers, so it seems a little more dangerous than it probably was.  Hard stuff (or impossible) to paddle out through, but not that dangerous for a surfer.  That swell was only a little overhead and the water was warm.  Most surfers have had to swim to the beach in similar conditions.

what kind of boats were those?

Looked like he started to "Run outta steam" with his paddle strokes, just as he was entering the big waves!  Perhps thats why he got turned around and ended surfing a bit before tumbling.

They call them "fishing skis".  One manufacturer (MacSki) sent me a couple boats about 5 years ago to introduce them to NorCal.  I had one on display at the NCKA booth the last Fred Hall Show in San Francisco Cow Palace.

Those guys have to have some good surf skills to even attempt something like that.  Most of us wouldn't stand a chance with our typical plastic fishing kayaks.  Most of their fishing skis have flat bottoms like a surfboard.
