I've hooked 4 this year already.  Couple years ago I hooked an angry sea lion, that was crazy!

So sorry Ryan.  That sucks.  I really enjoyed hanging with you and your brother.

Hit me up if you feel like getting back on the water.

A couple years ago I'd do 8 - 10 hours all the time.  Then my hips started bothering me.  Now I average around 4-5 hours.

I'm coming!

Hope to be there early Friday afternoon.

This is definitely not the way technology is supposed to work.  I want these people inside, off the streets and out of sight plugged into the Matrix!  Now we have a bunch of vegetables creeping around.  Arghh!

But..... it's kinda fun.  Caught my first Pikachu the other day :smt006

General Fishing Tips / Re: Rod Advice

Thanks for the advice. I see the medium Ugly Stik Tiger has a 20-50# line rating. Would that be the line rating I should look for with other brands and not focus on the medium, medium light, etc. rating?

Get the Ugly Stik.  I like medium action.  The light action doesn't work well with the heavy jigs I use.  I ended up with some high end rods and I still use my Ugly Stik as my go to.

In the ocean we dress to survive without our boats.  What if they sink or are blown away by the wind?  Wetsuit or drysuit.  It's not only about staying warm while on the kayak.

Josh

Josh, first I hear you and everyone needs to do what they feel is the right thing to do, for some that may be way over protected and prepared but it makes them feel safe.

What if it sinks? Well I'll question you, how is it going to sink unless you were attacked by a shark and it punctured the hull? I read about a guy that had that happen and he was still able to get back on and peddle in. I may not be thinking of every possible way but I'm only thinking of the most reasonable possibilities. If your hull is in good shape there is no reason that it could just sink. Second how is it going to blow away in the wind? I'll tell you what if I'm fishing and the wind comes up and I can't return to my launch area I'm going to look for the nearest area to come ashore. If I can't come ashore safely anywhere and feel stranded I'm getting on channel 16 on my VHF and calling the coasties! I'm not fishing when a small craft advisory is reported and I'm not fishing when weather might threaten my safety.

I'm not a novice boater and have been fishing on friends ocean boats for about 10 years and have been a boater for about 20 years owning 3 boats between 21 and 32 feet and have taken the USCG boaters safety classes and was a member of a yacht club in the Delta.

Form my point of view if I get in trouble and think it could be life threatening I'm calling channel 16 from the VHF attached to my uppers by a lanyard.

Some of us are quite ambitious in our kayaks.  I have been 5 miles offshore on my kayak in pursuit of salmon and I am not alone.  A shark attacking my kayak is a real possibility that I prepare for.

Kayaks get old, the plastic deteriorates, hatches don't get closed, drain plugs do not get put back in, shit happens and it has to many on the forum.

The wind comes up, the fog rolls in, Mother Nature is not predictable and can catch you off guard and has to many on the forum.

Guys fall off their kayaks and become too fatigued to get back in their kayaks without assistance.

I love the idea of a kayak because we each are responsible for ourselves.  I don't preach, I don't give unsolicited advice, but you asked and I answered.

Maybe he was in a full wetsuit (good luck sinking in one) and got too hot so he took the top down?

Too each his own,
Josh

P.S.  I always wear my PFD so I don't get shit from you guys :smt006

I finally made it!

Up till now my biggest fish have included a 38" salmon, 38" lingcod & 38" California Halibut.  None surpassing the 40" mark.

Last Saturday I went out searching for salmon in Monterey and after several hours of trolling called it quits.  On the way in I decided to try for a halibut at the same area I caught one last year.   I dropped down my 8oz iron and started pounding the bottom.  It wasn't 10 minutes and something slammed my jig.  A couple big head shakes and I new what I had and it felt heavy!  Took a deep breath, reeled up a bit putting tension on the line, grabbed my gaff getting it in position, opened my big game clip and started reeling it in.

I was only in 60 feet of water so it came to color pretty quick.  Big Cali Butt!!!  I brought it up to just below the surface.  As it circled next to my kayak I grabbed my gaff and stuck it right through it's guts.  It didn't move at all.  I set down my rod, put it on the clip, grabbed my bait knife and went Kiet on it's gills.  As soon as I pulled the gaff out it went nuts so I dropped it off the side tethered to my kayak on the game clip and let it thrash around, pumping out its blood as the water turned red.  It quickly calmed down (died) and I slid it on the back of my boat.

Pat (SinCoast) was supposed to fish with me but sent me a message on the water flaking out so I was quick to send him a text and picture bragging about the 25 lb halibut I had just caught.  At the time I didn't realize how big it was.  As soon as I got home I weighed and measured it and holy shit!  40 1/2" long and 32 lbs!!! New personal best halibut and new personal best fish!  Take that Pat!

Here are the pics,
Josh
