Nice job... Every time I fish the AR I worry about my car... We usually park out on the street in a neighborhood... walk in to the river.. Still worry though.  My buddy Steelie Mike knows everyone there in cordova.. He is usually talking to the neighbors when we park...  makes me feel a little more comfortable.

if anyone is interested the AR is covered in salmon fry... the shallows are loaded down to Rossmoor...  i have been using a one inch smolt fly with an egg sack just below the head...... used it in mostly faster water on a nymph rig.  6 fish to the shore.. largest landed was 16" but we had some nice fish in the air.

I'd say juvenile steelie..  Dont think the king fingerlings and juveniles stay in the river to that size...  Adipose fin looks intact......... wild one

I guess this is turning into a " dumb illegal s.... i did as a kid " subject but I gotta beleive alot of us were crazy and slipped into closed waters some...  The kids here at the back end of Upper San Leandro are still doing it years later so time has not changed the  right of passage know as trespassing.  By 16 Briones just looked too good.. we would park our cars on the road.. run into the bushes and land on the lake.. got caught twice both times with the rods in the bushes as we approched the car... he was waiting there....heeeelllooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had to learn the hard way that a fenwick rod and zebco reel cost a little more by then...

Ya know a Zebco open face spinning reel and rod were probably 20 bucks.. My poor dad had to hear from the ranger the last two times I got caught and I had to work for the next rod... 13 brought my firstfly rod with a Pfueger reel.. Ah the clicker style drags .... useless

fact was back then you could catch all the fish you wanted with just about anything.....After it opened to the public the best bait was crawdad tails casted and drifted until they hit the bottom... Super large bluegill.....

Couldnt find anyone to do sturgeon tomorrow so Im going to the lake I grew up on... little lafayette.. In 1965 I moved to Lafayette and I used to sneek into "the pond" from my buds house just above on the hill.  Lost three rigs to the ebmud guys from age 12-15 and caught some of the biggest bass of my life in the process..  Havent fish it since I got back two years ago.  Gonna throw some plastic worms, some rapalas and maybe troll some flies.. If all else fails Im gonna dunk some Herring for catfish...
Should be at the office at 830 am.  Love some company

Hey fellas... I went to Benicia B and T and the lady recommended I stay far away from the waterfront from san pablo to sherman I.   She claims the boat traffic this weekend is the worst of the winter.. I am considering doing an airport run as most of these derby folks wont go that far.... the weigh in is in pittsburg...  Anyway.. I got to go somewhere so if anyone has bay or ocean ideas let me know.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: steelie flies for the American..hand tied, no vice
« on: February 01, 2012, 07:38:56 PM »
Ended up hooking two fish on flies and 8+ on worms and plugs.   Worms caught this one right at Watt..
Lots of small smolts 10-14"  and this larger one.  I fish with crazy Mike at least once a month... He gets me to water that just doesn't get fished as much...

Hey Ryan.. the AR is a killer and looks like a mellow fellow but it punishes many a kayak and shore angler alike..  My buddy Steelie Mike has pulled out dozens of folks over the years, gotten folks to shore, returned boats to their owners and the like.  My experience has always been good when on rivers.  Power boaters are a little different breed but most are good folks with the same goal in mind as you..  Boats with motors really dont belong on the upper AR but thats a whole other can of worms we dont want to open up..

I'm still laughing... someday we'll learn to vote the whole bunch out in a 4 year period... a whole new bactch of fools couldn't do worse.

Thanks Tote..  Thats a Dr. Slick wood whip.. first time with wood.. always use the metal one.. this one is nice but I'll know when I get home next week in Utah.  I know I can tie big weighted jigs no problem without the vice but the smaller stuff requires one.  I'll post pictures if we catch anything nice.
