I've been getting mussels in Pebble Beach since the start of the year during low tide (King Tides). There is a resident that has called SECURITY on me and verbally harassed me twice stating that what I was doing was illegal. Security stopped me and asked if i had mussels in my backpack and if I had a license. I said it was legal to harvest there 365 days a year. 10 lb limit. He said he was just responding to a call and let me continue on. I went there again last week and the same female came over and told me it was illegal and called SECURITY again. This time the guard drove by and watched at a distance as the woman continued to harass me for taking mussels. She even went as far as to say ASIANS were coming by the busload and doing the same. I was shocked! I tried to show her the map of legal areas and even the regulations for taking them but she said that that was only my opinion and that she would call F&G who she said she had on "speed dial". I said i would wait, please call, she said she would later.  Long story short, I called Fish and Game. The warden said what I was doing WAS legal and the there was a 2009 law the made her actions illegal and he would look at the Pebble Beach security logs and find out who she was and educate her of the law. I'm sure i'm not the only one this has happened to but if you do go there and anyone tries to stop you or threatens to call Security or F&G please report them, this can't continue! F. Warden Doug Wall will be glad to help protect us from being verbally threatened and hassled by this citizen and private security.  Just a tip...

General Talk / Very sad day today
« on: August 31, 2015, 02:57:47 PM »
This morning we lost a member of NCKA, my brother, Terry Winn, aka (winnterr).
He was the most courageous man I have ever known. He was a skilled fisherman that taught me almost everything I know about fishing and living a good life.I could go on and on about how great a man he was,Eagle scout(White Stag) Army veteran(assault helicopter company commander) Capt. Viet Nam.
San Jose St. graduate and traveled the entire world and every continent multiple times with his wife Rita by his side. He was a mans man and the best friend you could ever have.
Tight lines my brother.

General Talk / Where's my kayak?
« on: September 26, 2014, 09:33:00 AM »
This is what's left of our garage and carport in Baja after the hurricane.
You can see the boat under the tarp but to the right is where 4 kayaks and a windsurfer are buried
in the rubble of the garage. We are going down in 3 weeks to see if we can rebuild or call it a day.
The town got it a lot worse and our thoughts are for the locals. Just a tip...

I was sitting around waiting to go clamming and the neighbor walks over and asks if i want to go fishing.
What's a guy to say? Heck yes! We hopped on his baja bayrunner and put a nice 15lb yellowtail in the box then a nice bonita and couldn't keep the squid off the lines.Sashimi, last night, yellowtail tonight. Anyone know of a good way to prepare the squid? I've heard of soaking it in milk and baking soda so that's what we're going to try later.                  Just a tip...

Arrived in Bahia de los Angeles yesterday! 2 day drive down in WINDY conditions. The weather is warm,80 and calm in the morning, capping in the afternoon. Reports of Bonita out in front of the casita. Heading to the estuary later today for a bucket of clams and then set the kayaks up for fishing tomorrow. Getting excited to wet a line and the wind is supposed to die down tomorrow. We'll be here 3-4 weeks or until it gets too hot for this central coast fog lover. Good thing about windy days,it's good for riding the KTM on the Baja 1000 course.
The best of both worlds!!!   Oh yea, and then there's that new LG RELEASE reel to try out, thanks Chad,i'll let you know how it does. :smt006

General Fishing Tips / Have you tried SALT AWAY?
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:59:24 PM »
I've been using salt away for some time now on everything from rods&reels to kayak straps and pfd straps, The stuff is expensive but seems to control corrosion and makes straps soft and pliable.Has anybody tried it and what long term damage does it do, if any? I use it to wash off my stuff before storing it for next season.  Just a tip...

General Talk / Boneyard garden
« on: March 12, 2013, 02:58:07 PM »
This might be better in the saftey section.I pulled weeds and tilled the planter boxes getting ready for the Spring season. All those fish that I threw in for fertilizer came back to haunt me. The bones were still there and were as sharp as needles! No kidding! :smt044 I could have used them for weapons!I was surprised at how long it takes for the skeletons to break down. The jaws, gill plates and such were still very sharp and poked right through my gloves!
I dislike throwing the skeletons in the garbage and thought it would be good for the plants soooooo....
Be careful if you throw your fish in the garden!!!  Just a tip...

Safety First / 3.04.13 Stillwater rescue
« on: March 04, 2013, 06:52:50 PM »
We were hiking Pt.Lobos today about 3-4pm when a Carmel Highlands firetruck rolled into Whalers Cove, lights flashing. They opened the shed doors that hold their inflatable rescue boat and dropped it in the water, jumped in without saying a word and headed srtaight to Stillwater Cove. We talked to a ranger later who said there was a person about 1000yds off shore that had a compound fractured leg and needed to be resued and a helicopter was enroute to transport.I hope all is well with everyone tonight. This is a dangerous time year with the "sleeper waves" and quickly changing conditions. Please be careful and always kayak, dive or go in the water with a friend just in case.
We didn't stay and see how things turned out but please be careful out there....Just a tip
