AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY« on: January 23, 2024, 06:02:16 PM »
Funny how sentiment seems to have changed over the question of even putting an elec motor on a yak...
I've had my torqeedo motor since 09. I basically use it as a paddle assist. It sure helps with my arthritic shoulder. Does it give me an advantage catching fish ? I think not. My Electric is quiet,,, quite opposite of a noisy, stink pot gas motor and nowhere near as fast. About the same noise level as a peddle kayak.. about the same speed... so I don't see any reason why not. I've seen lot's of guys flip all sorts of yaks,, some just never learned to get back in on their own.. Anyone getting on the water in a kayak needs to learn and practice that skill. The more crap you pile on only makes it more challenging . So practice with full gear on. Don't wait till the wind is howling and waves building to find out. 3

General Talk / Re: With popularity of kayaks, how come no company put a motor in it yet?« on: March 27, 2023, 10:26:23 AM »
Here's an interesting mod someone did. I just did some searching for video's I've done in the past and came across this for the first time. The Fin drive makes for a great keel. Bixpy makes a motor that would drop into place where the Pedal drive is..
I've tested the Bixpy ,, liked it. I have a Torqeedo mounted in place of the rudder. I've been using since 09... it still works great. 6

Kayaks / Re: Can I test kayak fishing with my whitewater kayak inside the SF bay?« on: March 22, 2023, 09:03:34 AM »
Why Not ? Go for it. If you whitewater , you probably know your limits.
Here's an article on Dave Lamourex In November 2009 the man cashed in a 157-pound bluefin, at the time the heaviest paddle-out kayak tuna—a feat that has yet to be equaled in Atlantic waters. https://www.mensjournal.com/adventure/bluefin-tuna-kayak 8

It's not so much about challenging competition.
By far the worst part of buying product made in China is THAT is supporting a Communist Regime. A rapidly expanding military that now is aligned with Russia. Supporting Russia in it's war in Ukraine. Today they are conducting military exercises with Russia in preparation for.... ? WW3 ? Invasion of Taiwan ? Defense of N.Korea... In 30-40 years, every American made product has shifted production to China. It's disgusting how America is willing to support an adversary to save a buck. We've become " The Great Mall of China " It's about supporting US Labor / Jobs / Democracy / Human rights. What America has defended for so long. No way are we going to compete with the .67 cent/ hour labor that China has. 9

General Talk / Re: Free Firewood« on: December 05, 2022, 08:12:49 AM »Drive up access to the wood? I could probably start planning for next year early. Yup,,, real easy access. 11
General Talk / Free Firewood« on: December 01, 2022, 10:03:54 AM »I recently bought some land up in Mountain Ranch. It's 14 acres of Butte Fire damaged trees. I had a masticator crew go thru a few months ago and clear the land where I plan on building. Now there's tons of wood on the ground ,, it'll just rot if not harvested. I hate seeing it all go to waste. If anyone is in need of firewood there's a lot of great burning Oak available. Some is already cut into rounds, it splits easily with a Maul... A lot of trees still standing, all of it is well seasoned Black Oak. All of it is easily accessible.. 12

Have you tried acetone to remove the paint ? I have had success putting parts in a bucket with a lid on it. just a small amount of acetone. The fumes seem to soften and melt away the paint.
I'd contact the anodizier and ask them if they have a suggestion. It might not be an issue. 14

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Woodworking questions on stabilizing cracks« on: March 03, 2022, 02:05:42 PM »
Don't heat the slab after pouring the epoxy. reverse of that. You need to warm the wood up first, then mix and apply the epoxy letting it slowly cool back down. Warm the epoxy during the mix. The warmer it is the faster it will set up..
Reason for this to prevent bubbles. That cooling down phase will draw the epoxy into the wood. Of course not cool down to below the curing temp. To get that fine texture you're looking for, rather than sanding it you may consider using " Peel Ply cloth" . Once cured the cloth will peel off,, leaving an imprint from the cloth. ( that cloth is a super fine weave ) You could do a light first coat to impregnate the wood,, then the second coat using the Peel Ply... Or even top coat a brush / spray on a satin finish of varnish. I've had epoxy set under colder temps ( 60's ),, it just takes much longer to cure. Avoid if possible. 70 should be no problem. Also remember you can fill that crack with sanding dust and epoxy mixed into a paste. for color match... https://epoxycraft.com/top-tips-best-ways-to-use-epoxy/using-peel-ply-to-best-effect/ Good luck ! sounds like a fun project |
