Don't trust this guy... first two were correct, it's definitely a fish.  ;)

The area from opal cliffs to seacliff beach is kinda like an anomoly due to the warm water that gets trapped inside there.
Here's another exotic...from 2010 in 25fow off New Brighton on live sardine, during the striper bite.

Is that really an exotic?  I saw one in monterey bay aquarium this weekend so I would have guessed we're in their historical range.
You know what, I'm probably wrong on this one, depending on how we define "exotic".  The aquarium also had seniorita and a garibaldi which are pretty rare for up here.

Senoritas are definitely not rare.  Due to size of fish/mouth/habits they're not part of normal fishing bycatch, but they are very common up here.   :-)
However you're right about the garibaldi; I've never seen or heard of of those orange goldfish being found up here.

Have heard of a couple shot in Stillwater over last decade.  Maybe lost ones up here with the El Niño other fish (opaleye, calico, sheepshead).

alright so what about a  mako predator 2nd generation railgun
with these options (they ask me to select )

60 cm
single 20mm band
mini shark fin shaft
blue butt pad

If you're going to buy a new gun, go for a Rob Allen 70cm.
IMHO, it's the speargun most suited to norcal diving.
Accurate, durable, and a local company.
Plus they support DOTY.  ;)

As norcalslayer mentioned, use a floatline (vs a reel) to start.  It makes a lot more sense.

A railgun is a pipe-style speargun that has a full rail on the barrel supporting the shaft.

For example - Rob Allen, Mako, and some models of european brands like Omer, Sporasub, etc.   :-)

This venue is a certainly a step up from the typical parking or dirt lot that NCKA accustom to. :-)

Is the parking lot large enough?  Or is there overflow parking?

Carpool as much as possible.  There is overflow parking and dirt parking available, but the less vehicles, the better.  ;)

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Warmest freediving suit questions
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:21:57 PM »
Hola divers,  I am on a quest for a new free diving wetsuit for the Northern California coast. I have been diving the coast for 37 years, have worn out many suits, including my last, about a 8 year old Bear suit. One IMPORTANT  note....I am 5ft 9in and...145 pounds...super fit with very low body fat.  I freeze!
Looking for the best, warmest suit available... and where to buy it. Heard about CRESSI, any others? Thanks for any input, Ron

A size 50 or 50L would be your best bet... check with the freediveshop in Sacramento.

Fit is crucial, so go in and try on different suit brands to find the right match.
Getting the right suit makes a world of difference.

I seem to remember a not cuts rule for the fish. If a hole is torn due to the shaft that's ok but no cuts.... after you shot the halbut. It appears that you cut the body for no good reason. I feel his fish needs to be disqualified.... :smt005 :smt005g

Lol! Stabbing a fish to subdue it is not against the rules.

I dunno... Nathan has a point.  ;)

The shot was good, so subduing isn't a good excuse.
Looks to me like you started gutting the fish prematurely.   :smt011
