In my old age, I'm less and less up for hours of hunting but I do enjoy just putting on the wetsuit and go sight seeing in Monterey.  But...  the restrictions on fishing are for boat based anglers.  So if I have a shorty rod and I am swimming around in 60 fow, I presume I can drop a line and pull in a rockfish or lingcod?  The rules are not specific.  I am not boat based.  I am not using spear fishing gear.   Curious as to people's thoughts.

Divers and shore-based anglers are exempt from season and depth restrictions affecting the RCG complex and other federally managed groundfish (sections
27.20(b)(1)(C) and 27.20(b)(1)(D)). Shore-based anglers are fishermen that fish from beaches, banks, piers, jetties, breakwaters, docks, and other manmade
structures connected to the shore. Divers are spear fishermen entering the water either from the shore or from a boat or other floating object. The possession and
transit provisions described for shore-based anglers, and divers are as follows:
• When angling from shore (includes beaches, banks, piers, jetties, breakwaters, docks, and other man−made structures connected to the shore), all
species may be taken and/or possessed year−round (See subsection 27.50(b)(1) for exceptions in the Cowcod Conservation Areas). No vessel or
watercraft (motorized or non−motorized) may be used to assist in the take, transport and/or possession of these species under this provision.
• When diving or spearfishing, as authorized in Section 28.90, all species may be taken and/or possessed year−round (See subsection 27.50(b)(2) for
exceptions in the Cowcod Conservation Areas). When boat−based groundfish fishing is closed, all types of fishing gear, except spearfishing gear, are
prohibited to be aboard the vessel or watercraft (motorized or non−motorized) when taking and/or possessing these species under this provision.

Is winter kokanee a thing?  Just curious as duck season winds down and we have a few months of quiet in our world.  Last year halibut heated up really fast in Feb though.  I'll probably go any ways but was wondering if folks did have some success.

So I took the Stealth Fusion out to HMB on Sat 9/4.  Some observations -

If you have a fishfinder, it is trivial to set up with transponder, battery pack and screen all mounted without having to drill a hole in your kayak.  I used velcro for the screen, a dry bag for the batteries and a few scraps of wood with stainless bolts and lock nuts to hold in the transponder in the provided scupper.  People make this much harder and expensive than necessary. 

The live well works. 

It is a wet ride.  If you are moving, the Venturi effect keeps it all dry, but if you are just sitting there enjoying your coffee... well, you are sitting below water level. 

No coffee cup holder. 

Your reels will get wet due to where the holders are relative to your paddle motion. 

You can't eat and troll.  Your fishing style will be more jigging and drop shotting when bottom fishing.  I'll do salmon trolling to see how it is when the bite picks up. 

I added a screenshot of my paddles on Sat.  7.7 miles.  Nice upper body workout.  1.5 mph into the wind and tide.  I'm in reasonable shape (run 10k's etc...) and it wasn't hard, but I did make a note of the BS claims on YouTube about 3 mph into the wind without trying. 

Less gizmosity.  (yes, I declare that is a real word).  No seat, no pedal mechanism, all the junk just fits in the hatch.  You end up feeling like you are forgetting something. 

Would I buy again?  Yes.

Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) is regularly eaten raw in Korean and Japan.  No freezing, just cut and go.  I've not heard of thousands of Koreans pitching over from stomach pains.

Blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) is generally thought of as a no-go on the sushi side of things for us here in CA but I'm a bit adventurous.  I'm blessed with a -19F home freezer so I've been processing some of the better looking fillets and they make nice sushi / sashimi.  YMMV but freeze according to FDA requirements and enjoy!   

This is my first year with my kayak - a Hobie Quest 13.  I've been primarily on the Delta and a few lakes in the area and for the most part, other than dressing with appropriate external clothing (high performance outdoor wear), I've not considered a wet suit or dry suit.  The other day I launched on the Delta and the water temperature was 49F.  Per the various survival charts, that gives me about 30-60 min in the water max.  In the Delta by default I'm rarely more than 30-50 yds from a bank so I'm assuming with PFD I can reach the shore, but I was curious if you experienced kayakers don wet suits in the winter months.
