Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Hull Protection
« on: Today at 10:06:12 AM »
I've seen lots of hull protection posts and none of the solutions seem permanent.  Some kayaks have that replaceable skeg, that's probably the only solution that I've seen that looks permanent, but still needs to be replaced depending on use.

That said, I'm also not sure why people feel they need hull protection.  I'm careful with my kayak, not perfectly all the time, it has some scrapes for sure, some gouges.  But I'm not wearing away any spot on my kayak, because I don't drag it except on sand or dirt.

When I wheel to the water I get the nose as close to the water on my wheels and then lift it off on to the ground.  When I launch, I lift the back end and walk out, not scraping and the nose floats the yak until i'm ready to jump in and go.  If i'm at a launch ramp I do the same, except facing backwards.  I have hullavators, so it comes off the side of my truck, and on to the ground, with the rear of my yak already in the water.  Launching by lifting the front and walking out and then I either launch backwards or turn it.

4.   Vermillion limit reduction to 2-sub bag limit in all areas except Northern Groundfish Management Area, which has a 4-sub bag limit.

Is there a data based reason for this change?  I have a feeling that it's exploratory management.

Curious, why do you have that feeling?

Just for me personally, I've caught a lot more verms in recent years than prior.  Last year probably more than any other single year. But, I could have just gotten better at fishing  :smt005

I really like this design, although you have to BIY: https://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/recompression/docs/FishGrip_HowToMake.pdf
(Thanks to 3$j in: https://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=89347.30)

The videos on its usage just looks like what i'm imagining doing on my kayak:

I have some thin poly-rope and I want to mount it on a spindle or some way I can just clip the rockfish and then descend it by dropping overboard

Thanks for the info!

SFD looks super-simple. But, are we really supposed to use a descending device, even if fish are caught in relatively shallow water? I usually fish for for bigger game, and generally barbless. I've released vast numbers of RF bycatch, and it's always no-touch--just grab the hook and shake. It seems to me that a descending device will have a lot more chance of harming the fish than what I do, with no possible benefit, at least in shallow(ish) water.

No I'm sure if it goes down easy like you said a few shakes and it goes , that's the best way anyway. As far as harming effect if its bad enough its lingcod/shark bait.
Can you imagine the look on that lingcod when it sees a large fish being shaken as you yank on the descending device. LOL heck it might be worth putting a lure on above the descending device and leave it there after you yank the other fish off eh? never know.

This will work with smaller fish.
I don't think that will work if the fish has barotrauma.  You wont be able to send a bloated fish down with only a couple of ounces, you need something over 6oz and more is better/easier to descend.

General Talk / Re: Scammers

What a scam!

Personally, unless I recognize the number, I let all calls go to voicemail. Most of them won't even bother to leave a message, and if they do, it's a lot easier to ignore, as you're not caught off guard.
I'm in this camp as well, most of the time.  But I've made a bunch of appointments recently and have had people actually calling me for things.  But this might inspire me to use my google voice number for things that I care about.

I can't believe you called the number. Felt guilty? :)
I called back the number, they called me originally and wanted me to stay on the line.  But it is true they had me a bit concerned that I did actually have some failure to appear for jury summons, because I know that I missed at least one request during 2021/covid.  It is embarrassing afterward, but they really did get me in to a state of confusion up until they started trying to get me to go get a bail bond.  While on the phone I tried googling the number and wasnt' coming up with anything.  So when I hung up and called back and the voicemail box wasn't a receptionist or a IVR system I knew it was a hoax.  I'm not falling for anything like that again, and hope no one else does ever.  My dad was scammed by people claiming he won the Publishers Clearing House claiming that he won a million dollars.  Scammers that prey on people like this are the scum of the earth.

I'd love to have a chat with whomever designed those seps containers cause the same thing happens to me every time  :smt044

I had some other baggies (no, not those kind) for swivels or weights or something and I put them in there.  There is a hole in the bag just the right size to pop one out when I need it, so I do that.  Still, I keep everything in a container when assembling, cause those mf's go everywhere if you drop them.

Had someone call from 408-963-5952 and say they were from the Santa Clara county Sheriffs department and said I had two warrants for failure to appear for jury duty summons.  They were very insistent that I was in serious trouble and needed to prove that I wasn't the one that signed a certified letter for the summons.  They started instructing me to stay on the phone and get ready to drive down to the office while still on the phone.  I started getting suspicious there, but as soon as they said that I had a bail that would need to be paid I decided to accidentally drop the call, and then try and call the number back which went to a empty mail box. They called repeatedly and asked why I got disconnected and I confronted them as scammers, and hung up.  They texted a lot of profanity in response.

Dang, I cant believe that I belived them for a minute there... Hopefully no one else falls for this.

Thank you Paul and AlsHobieOutback !
If you want to test the import in Navionics I can try converting the file if you are willing to let me know if it works.

13
Yep, we have the new 20fa line and 50fa line tracks with mlpa zones.  I don't actually have Navionics, but I believe Paul does and probably has the process down to import them.

I searched the web but can't find a map that shows the devide line between California Central-N and Cetral-S of 36degree.  Appreciate if someone can post it here.

Referring to this:

Quote
Within the Central Groundfish Management Area, seasons and
depth restrictions may differ north and south of a line extending west of 36° N. lat. (near
Point Lopez, Monterey County). The areas north and south of this line are referred to as
the Central Groundfish Management Area – North of 36° N. lat. and the Central
Groundfish Management Area – South of 36° N. lat.
(b) Central Groundfish Management Area – N

https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean It looks to me like the middle of Central is Lopez Point.

Google earth shows 36 N is right about Limekiln SP

General Fishing Tips / Re: Freshwater Line Choice

On my powerbait rod, which is a 4' UglyStick I use 4LB mono.  My trolling setups though I use 10lb braid, and 8lb fluorocarbon top shot.  I feel like braid does better while trolling cutting through the water.  Can go up to 10lb fluoro since it's invisible in the water and some of those are big mofo's.  But 8 feels right to me most of the time
