Hey everybody! I've held off on putting up GS13 as I formulated some new details. The event will be essentially the same as the past few years with a few exceptions:
- Grand Prize = A full charter on the Sea Hawk on Sunday, May 19th - this will be split between the winners of the tourney and the raffle - 1st place gets a seat and a guest, 2nd place gets a seat, and the other 3 seats will be drawn in the raffle. If it's blown out then Captain Jake Mitchell has offered to do a halibut seminar that day.
- only one lingcod can be retained this year due to new CDFW regulations;
- competitors will be limited to 200; and
- the raffle proceeds will go to the newly formed Shelter Cove Fishing Preservation Inc. (more info on that later).
Hopeful news: it looks like we should get a pretty good salmon season, and it's almost assured that Pacific halibut will be open again. I'll revise this post as I get more info.
Gimme Shelter has a ton of history - if you want some background or to re-live past GS weekends then check out the threads of past events.

A few tidbits:
- the GS weekends since GS3 in 2009 have seen more Pacific halibut hooked and caught by kayakers than at any other time or port in California;
- salmon and halibut can be caught in as little as 10' of water near the Cove;
- lots of AOTY entries and personal bests for NCKA members come in on the GS weekend;
- Shelter Cove is going through significant changes, and the kayak community is poised to be in an excellent position in terms of helping the locals to keep the fishing tradition strong;
- this is a family event where we celebrate each other, the NCKA community, the Cove community, the animals and the beauty of the Lost Coast.
I hope to see you there. :smt001

So Eric; what's the clinic gonna be this year?
With so many new people joining NCKA, maybe a second, afternoon clinic, an 'intro to the ocean/Shelter Cove clinic'? My first trip to Shelter Cove was a clinic with you and it really set my mind at ease to get a first hand tour of the layout on the water. I now know where to fish to improve my chances of catching several different species and stay safe while doing so. Tides, currents, swell, wind, growlers, all information I gained while also learning to target specific species. Throw in seasons, limits and general ethical fishing behavior that rounded out the clinics I attended and I'm a much better and safer kayaker today. THANKS!!!
-
Shifra and I are in!

:smt001
So Eric; what's the clinic gonna be this year?
Jerry - Thanks for your post. I will do the same trip as the past few years. I wish I had time and energy to do an afternoon trip, but I've got a full schedule. The trip is fantastic for newbies to the Cove, and it's a great review for people who have done one of my earlier runs. I review the presentations and techniques that are my primary means of catching all species at the Cove, and, perhaps more importantly for some, I give info on the current trends for the season. I will have already been salmon and halibut fishing for over a month by the time we hit the Cove for GS, so the current trends/where the fish are is a big piece of the puzzle.
I already have a couple of people signed up for Friday's trip. PM me if interested in that day or Thursday.
Thursday trip still has open spots. PM me if interested.

Opening day at the Cove last June...

I'll be there. I can't fucking wait !! I just got my room reserved from Verna. Registration to follow. This has always been my favorite event of the year. Extremely beautiful coastline, totally pristine and loaded with the complete plethora of fish. Like a naked lady laying on the beach with a cooler full of ice-cold IPA, The cove calls me in..I have to have it. I missed it last year cuz of my stupid job. This year I seek to make up for it.

Shelter Cove Fishing Preservation Inc.
As some of you may know, Shelter Cove is going through changes that will affect anyone who fishes there. NCKA is very lucky to have Eric and Verna Kaai living at Shelter Cove and acting as advocates for the kayak fishing community. Eric has recently helped to organize a non-profit group at the Cove which is readying itself to step up and take control of management and administration of the fishing facilities including the launch and access road. This is a huge deal.
Check out Eric Kaai's post here:
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=86546.msg985220#msg985220
I've been fishing at Shelter Cove since the 70's, diving there since the 80's, and kayak fishing there since the 90's. It's 75 miles from my home, so it's not exactly my back yard, but I consider myself one of the locals down there - especially after almost 5 years of guiding with the Cove as my top destination. There have been many changes that have occurred over the years with the cleaning station, launch, breakwater and the overall fishing facility including ice service, tackle and bait availability, and various basic commercial fishing 'amenities' (like a big scale that used to hang for anyone's use - that was great). The changes have happened separate from the input of the kayak fishing community up until now - that was a natural progression based on long-standing use by recreational powerboaters and commercial interests as well as the newness of kayak fishing. When the Humboldt Bay Harbor and Recreation District stepped in to manage the launch and facility for a few years it became apparent that the wheels were falling off the bus - they reportedly went deep into the red due to mismanagement and are going from just last year announcing big improvements and investment to, now, abandoning the Cove and potentially leaving all fishing communities in a lurch regarding needed maintenance as well as basic day to day operations of the Cove's fishing infrastructure.
The new non-profit will be the driving force for the foreseeable future of Shelter Cove fishing issues, and the kayak fishing community is now a much bigger part of the picture. With Eric's participation on the SCFPI board we will have a voice, and we should all appreciate that. Thank you, Inn Keeper!
With GS13 I want to support SCFPI by giving all of the raffle proceeds to the newly formed group. I put much consideration into this and have always been very proud to support PIF and HOW - I think over the past few GS's PIF and HOW have received around $5000 each. This new opportunity for the Cove to realize some self-sufficiency and for the kayak fishing community to earn a full spot at the table is absolutely worthy, timely and warranted of the change I'm making.
Jake Mitchell of Sea Hawk Charters - arguably the top charter in the Cove the past few seasons - is president of SCFPI and an ally of the kayak fishing community. Jake has very generously donated a full boat charter on May 19th - the day after GS13 - for the Grand Prize in the tournament and part of the raffle (1st place gets a seat and a guest, 2nd place gets a seat, and the other 3 seats will be raffled off).
My hope is that we show the Cove some NCKA generosity by investing these raffle proceeds in good will toward the place we love and the community that needs the support. I also hope that 6 of our finest get a great day with Jake where Pac 'buts and salmon fill the hold. :smt001
Thanks for taking a few minutes to check out what I'm doing with GS as it relates to Shelter Cove and the kayak fishing community.

Great idea to donate to the cause keep The Cove available for all.
-
Thank you for the info and great works Eric & Eric :smt008

Sounds like fun, I think I'll check it out.

I'm gonna start now, saving for raffle tickets.

With the increased Pacific Hali Quota for 2019,
I'd like to offer up for the raffle a Kaai Custom Halibut Spear with release tip.
The picture below is just a sample, the actual donation will be much improved.

Nice. I’m happy to go over how I make them. Hickory axe handle, doweling jig, threaded ss stock, paracord, and a rattlecan of marine spar.
Doubles as a kage if you grind the tip to a point. Kage are supposedly illegal in California. Supposedly.

Fellas,
My buddy Cody who attended last year won't be making it this year so I need a sponsor as it will be my first GS. Will be coming up from Sacramento.
I've fished the cove with Eric and Cody (after GS 12) last year and it's an amazing fishery with a lot to appreciate.
If you can help, and I can use your name it would be much appreciated. Promise to bring something good for the potluck and you can have your share!
Please PM!
Best regards,
Tommy

Kayakfish7 and Snipeworm - I look forward to meeting you guys.
Greg and Ryan - glad you're coming. :smt001

I'm certified salmon-obsessed, but I think the thing I'm most excited about is the fact that 3 Pacific halibut were hooked during last year's tourney, and then two of my good friends brought Pac buts to the yak in the off season during the summer too.
Sooner or later someone will get to fight a huge one, and we will all share in that glory and excitement!

the shack will be back
I will supply a limit of ling and rocks again as usual.

No, you have to call in to the campground to make a reservation.
Phone: (707) 223-7224
Tell them you are coming for the kayak tournament for the 'special' rate.

Hello all! I'm interested in going to GS13 this year and it would be my first NCKA event. I'm pretty knowledgeable about safety etc on the water and I've fished Shelter Cove quite a bit! Anyways, since I'm fairly new to the area and haven't been to a NCKA event, I was looking for some buddy(ies) to sponsor me for this round?
Cheers!

Back in the day... and this is absolutely true - the salmon season started the second Saturday in February. It's only been 10 or 12 years I think since that was the case. I'll tell you, those were the days.
-
Definitely true story. Season went from early February to early November.

March 2007 - I recall that you got a bite on a crocodile, but we skunked as a group.

Gear is still in the conceptual phase, but I'll have it nailed down soon, and it will turn out like my usual simple but traditional vibe.
Here is my concept, and I do not know the color for the NCKA logo yet. It won't be blue - I've done 3 blues.
What color do you want the NCKA logo to be on the black t's, the black hoods and the black rash guards?
-
Might go with white...
-
Black t's with white NCKA logo on front and yakker with orange hills on back. That's where I'm leaning right now.

These look great Eric! I dig the black and white look. Excited to go to my first GS event this year!

Can you try.to change the rectangular shape to half moon shape to see how it look?

I don't have the technology! If I send you the vector can you play with it?
I do like the rectangle though.

Right on, Matt! Really glad you're coming. :smt001

Maybe print on the image the event info? This is just a crude idea of what I'm meaning

Yes, send it to me and we'll see how it looks.

Is this what you're looking for, Sonny?
-
Is this what you're looking for, Sonny?
Not quite. I am thinking half circle only.
-
I'd prefer the silhouette of the guy in the kayak white on a black zipper hoodie with event title underneath also in white.
-
:smt001
-
Know this was not one of your questions but I thought I would ask anyway, are the hoodies going to have a zipper or not. Just asking?
-
Just a few pics of some of the fish Matt and I caught at the Cove last year.
Not much to see here
-
I’d like to see the half circle Sailfish has suggested, it sounds interesting.
I really like the monochromatic idea of it in white.

It's a pullover.

This is just a rough draft of what I've done since I don't have the original high resolution picture from Eric yet. These 2 are just my suggestion but the decision is still rest with Eric.
-
For what it's worth,
I like the original graphic and think white on black is a great idea
;0)
-
Original paddling icon is great . How about the graphics color in neon green ? Something different.
-
Neon green on black?
Rob those pictures are awesome!!! Epic catches right there!!
-
Bring the salmon gear..! Looks like we're in that 6-8 year cycle according to the jack counts we got on the rivers last year. With these rains and the snow we've gotten this year.....I think it's going to start bringing in the toads.
-
Wow! Pine Mountain Pete, that's good news from a salmon whisperer like you.
-
Ah, GS photos - we gotta include Joe holding Randall’s ‘but. :smt003
-
Randall's Pac 'but - 51.5" :smt007
Pete's brace from 2012 or 2013 may have been the best couple of salmon to come in at a GS.
No one's caught a wolf eel since Jedmo I think, and it may be the case that no one's caught an octopus since Andy.
Who's gonna catch something exotic this year?

Does anybody want to sponsor me so I can register for gimme shelter 13?

Does anybody want to sponsor me so I can register for gimme shelter 13?
I think the correct question as a newbie is what’s the best way to go about getting a sponsor for the event? Inn keeper had stated before that you may need to go fish ahead of time with the OG’s so they can watch you prior to sponsoring you. I have the same questions as you as a newbie but from the previous posts this sounds like the best and safest way in to a sponsorship. Maybe the community can comment on this and give some further clarity for us.

I’ve been up there a bunch of times last year. I’m just new to this board. Honestly my motivation in joining is so I can enter the tournament.
-
Anyone sponsoring you is also vouching for your good behavior. I believe that is still the expectation.

I believe you can still attend the event if you can't find a sponsor, just that you can't participate in the tourney portion...unless that has changed. :smt005
You'd still be able to fish and chill with members. Or you can try to attend some of the other events between now and GS and meet some folks. If you haven't met any members yet, its highly unlikely anyone will sponsor a complete stranger.
-
I haven't attended any ncka events yet, but I have been fishing from my kayak several years now & have met some of you otw. Ian is my regular fishing buddy and I can thoroughly vouch for his behavior, always careful to be aware of regs and not be wasteful of the resource.
We fished the cove together half dozen or more times last year, and believe we met Inn Keeper and Lolita Eric on some of our trips (maybe you would recognize us in person?)
If my schedule allows I hope to register and attend GS13, right now trying to work it out with the lady. If I attend I would be happy to team with Ian.
Sorry if this goes against normal protocol / maybe some of this would have been better in PM?
And to Ian- about time you got on board, now you won't have to hear everything from me ;-p

Getting a sponsor isn't very hard, but getting more people to sign up before the last 10 days or so seems to be.
I think it will be most effective to make a separate post in NCKA, introducing yourself and asking for a sponsorship. It's all about vouching for someone's behavior - the sponsor will get involved if there's any confrontation or other unfortunate occurrence involving the sponsored participant.
Another route would be to go on the Lost Coast Kayak Anglers page on Facebook. I'm an admin, and I add pretty much whoever requests an add. Introduce yourself there and ask for a sponsor - that's worked for a couple people recently.
I don't sponsor people myself, or I'd sponsor all you guys - you seem like good guys with ocean experience to me.
Strangers do get sponsored - happens all the time. Just having the sponsorship program has resulted in having no unfortunate events like fights in camp, super drunk people disrupting or confronting other camps, guns brandished in camp...etc. The expectation that, as a community, we do not tolerate disruptive, belligerent, confrontational, shit-faced, rude or aggressive behavior is a good one and has led to having success with large groups.
Thanks for trying a little harder. :smt001

Sponsoring is vouching for someone's character. Character is defined by fishing ethics, personal safety on the water, and probably most important is social skills in a group living environment. We all live close together for days. Little things, like loud music after hours, cursing around the wimmen and children, drunk AND disorderly, etc are just not going to be tolerated. Not just the individual, but the sponsor is going to be held accountable for behavior. If someone hasn't seen you in a social situation where drugs, alcohol, families and close living for days is involved, then don't expect them to sponsor you. Most times this is done by attending an event without registration, then getting out to meet people. There are lots of events throughout the year, fish-n-chills, smaller tournaments, etc can get you introduced to folks who have the ability to sponsor someone for GS.
I think this screening is the main reason GS is such a successful event. Everyone knows everyone through everyone else. It is family. My camp is your camp. It's a level of trust that the person on the water next to you or in the campg next to you is going to respect everyone and not be a burden by not understanding the risks on the water by preparation, or loose control in social situations.
My first trip to GS was sponsored by a lead in HOW where I volunteered my help at several events. This person knew my character enough to take responsibility and risk his own reputation that I would not disappoint him. Thanks Racin' Rob!!

You can also try fishing with someone and let them get to know you. It doesn’t have to be at the Cove. The fish and chill at Berryessa is 3/29 and you have till 4/20 to register. Go to Berryessa and hopefully you can get to know the guys.

Yes I plan to go. I haven’t decided if I’m camping yet. I still remember the year it rained on my gear on the way up there. Setting up for tent camping while it’s raining sucks. I’m waiting for the weather report.
-
This was a reply to me from someone that I had met a few times but didn't know his history of experience on the ocean.
Gladly sponsored him.
Shelter Cove can have some challenging conditions to say the least.
" Hi Alex,
As far as my experience, I started off by taking sea kayaking classes 1&2 at CCK and a surf zone class at HMB with River and Ocean, I repeated the surf zone class at Bolinas late last year. In all of those classes we practiced recovery so many times I lost count, with most of them in the surf. I started out in the local lakes. I have been out in the SF Bay six times, Tomales Bay twice, HMB three times, north coast twice, and Bodega Bay once. All of this was in the past year. I have experienced sudden heavy winds at HMB, and fished 6-7 foot swells 14sec at Fort Ross.
For equipment I have a dry suit with fleece layers that keep me quite warm whether in the water or out, a gps radio, a gps chart plotter, a Spot transponder, compass, pump, throw bag, whistle, and a knife on my PFD. I have a comprehensive and liability kayak insurance policy.
I have been fishing in the Bay Area for over fifty years and went on my first rock fish trip when I was about 7. I do realize that I no longer have the physical abilities I had when younger but I’m much wiser and if conditions look bad I won’t go out.
I hope this eases your concerns, and thanks for being concerned "
Alex

When I first heard of the sponsor requirement I thought it was a little much. After searching out a sponsor Sonny agreed to sponsor me as long as I stuck near him on the water. Score for me! Hahaha... It's always a bit awkward being the new guy and trying to get where the fish are and not step on the toes of those in the know. Having Sonny tell me he knows the area, has been there every year, and wants me to stick to him, how cool is that for safety, friendship, and sharing local fishing knowledge! The sponsorship idea is pretty cool. It encourages people to interact and support each other. I imagine there was some negative events that ultimately put the rules in place making for a friendly event for all. I'm pretty excited to be heading up there and fishing with my new buddies! Hopefully next year I can pass on the good will.
-
Hey Slappy, track me down at the Berryessa event if you still need a sponsor by then. I’ll be easy to find...look for the guy handing out awards for Angler of the Year. In the past, I’ve sponsored people I barely knew and now we’re good friends.
The sponsorship rule is a good one...and it’s there for a reason. Just imagine if you had to be responsible for 200+ people at your favorite fishing spot. Although, the nature of kayak fishing seems to weed out most of the jerks. :-)
-
I was planning on attending this year .
I’m gonna register back issues or not , at least come up for the day or find a spot to camp just to chill at the very least ....that being said ,if I do fish.....I need a sponsor.... :smt044

Unfortunately I'm going to missed the GSXIII, I've turned in my vacation and just got informed we have clients that need support for their upcoming trial beginning April to mid June. All vacations are blacked out. :smt010

Folks - The roster is building...
If you sent in registration, be sure you receive a welcome email from me with a review of your order.
Salmon season will be open!! :smt007

Ripped and sanded the first big Trophy Trough for the event - the Fat 45 has some character! Sometimes it's not so bad to NOT be clear oldgrowth.
Sprayed, acid-dipped and shellacked the tens for AOTD, Killer Catch and other prizes.
The Functional Forty is almost done... and it's spoken for! :smt004
Last pic: half a dozen Dollar Store noodles in Food Saver plastic. Flotation in your hull isn't required, but it's highly recommended.

Looks like I may make it to GS this year. Looking forward to it. Thanks eric

Was looking forward to going home, but this Year my time off was denied a month ago,and sadly it looks like I'm not going to be able to attend.
Like Eric and the other local members I have enjoyed the beauty of the Cove. It was the roots to the ocean for me 40 years ago.
Thank you Eric for all you do for the community and the sport. You have made it possible for so many to experience the good life of the Cove.

So after 8 years at the junior college and 2 years at SSU, I just found out that my eldest daughter is graduating from Sonoma state with a bachelors degree in mathematics. Her graduation ceremony is May 18th as will be the after-party at my house. The bad news: This means I won't be able to attend Gimme shelter this year. The good news: She was a offered 6 year full-ride into the phd math program at university of Colorado in Denver. The tragedy: She and her boyfriend are going to give up their positions at the Russian river brewery and move to Colorado. I still would like to get the hat I ordered somehow and donate my registration fee to the Shelter cove preservation fund.

CONGRATS! Sorry you won’t make it to GS...
Was hoping to catch up with you at FNC here at Berryessa but missed ya.
Sin Coast and Tiny thank you for the Sponsor replacement...
still offering “dish duty” for you guys or some IPA to get outta dishes LoL.
Kayakjack hope to catch up with you soon

Eric,
I'll be there Thursday to Sunday. Fishing Trinidad and HBO on my way home. I have some experimental pac butt and salmon lures I have been working on as well as a new harpoon design. Harpoons are legal, right? :smt007 Looking forward to catching up with some old friends. Pot is legal too, right? :smt044 So many changes since I left Cali. LOL If anyone wants another team-mate, let me know. I promise I won't fall in and need to be rescued.

I'll be signing up again this year, this will be my 7th GS. That's good luck right?
-
After weeks of corresponding and feeling all run-around over trying to make a t-shirt out of a photo (my avatar here), I finally had a breakthrough when I hooked up with an old friend who knows his way around Illustrator and Photoshop. We worked together for a bit at his studio, then he worked more last night, and today we finalized what will be the art for GS13! I'm so relieved to get it done - what a challenge!
All of the tournament shirts over the years have had the common themes of the "yakker image" silhouette and basic one color print. This year I wanted to put a little more in to it, and I'm happy with how the final product turned out.
The picture below was the closest I could find to the original picture from 2007 where I captured a shot of my guest, Art, a mile off the Cape in October. The ocean's surface, the mist and the hillside contrasted with the kayak and Art's "I just hooked a nice ling" body position combined for a memorable image, but "digitizing" or "vectorizing" the image couldn't yield good results unless an expert worked on the color separations. Now I know...
Registration closes in a few weeks, so please put a stamp on it! :smt001

I can't figure out what the rock shaped thing on your lap is in the silhouette.

Slimee Gelter!

I can't figure out what the rock shaped thing on your lap is in the silhouette.
It's not my lap. It's my friend Art out at the Cape with me in October of 2007. It's probably some of his gear.
I just like to stay consistent with my image that's been on the gear for eleven years.

Well after 7 straight years of attending this absolutely amazing place we unfortunately cannot make it to the cove this year for GS.My dad and I joined forces this year and now have a Construction company together, unfortunately work calls and we are slammed busy. Hope to make it up sometime this year. Good luck to everyone and Hopefully the weather cooperates as well.

The Barnbacks and a story from my community.
I went looking for a piece of wood to use for the end pieces on the two big fish troughs I'm building for this year's Gimme Shelter 13th Annual Kayafishing Tournament. The troughs have always been redwood, so that's what I hoped to find at the local lumber yard. I've bought wood from other local lumber yards for past trough projects - a full 2 inch by 8 to 10 inch clear redwood board has become something that's increasingly hard to find, and if you do find it, it's likely to be pricey. No problem, I gladly pay what I have to.
I walked in to Valley Lumber in Ferndale, and within 30 seconds I was talking to the long time owner of the business, Troy Land. I told Troy about my project and that I was just looking for a board that's an inch thick and at least 8.875" wide. He listened to my description of my needs, and he knew right away that he didn't have any redwood that fit the specs. He then took me out to his yard and led me right to a stack of cedar boards at the bottom of a basic shed that housed many other stacks of lumber of varying sizes and species. Partially pulling out like a 12' board, Troy said the cedar was the closest thing he had available. I told him I only needed a foot of it and asked how much he'd charge. No charge, he said.
Troy pulled the board the rest of the way out and flopped it up onto a nearby cutting area, and as he routinely donned his ear and eye protection and turned the big saw on he said, "might as well just cut 2 feet so you get what you need."
With the saw turned off and safety gear hung back in place Troy went on to ask me about the finished thickness of the board - it was a bit wavy, like it was a bit of a misfit board in its day! I told him that I was shooting for an inch to 5/4 thickness, so he fired up his planer - another fixture in this well used and historic shop that looks like it's seen many generations of cutters - and he ran it through until my board was ready for my final trimming, some sanding, finish and attachment to the troughs.
As I left the shop I wore a wide and deep smile. I don't relish getting something for free - everything has value, and I always want to compensate for what I receive. This was different and very special. This was an instance where a community member came looking for possibilities, and another community member, after quickly hearing the need, realized that a very minor bit of his resources and time given could fulfill that need. There was no haggle. There was no second thought at all. This was the gift of community.
Soon I will take the completed Barnbacks in to Valley Lumber to thank Troy again in person.
-
Great story and community effort!
-
Enjoyed reading your story, it used to be like that when I was younger. Now days everything has a price on it. I was even told by a friend that runs a small store that" nothing is free". Took my wife to Ferndale once loved that town, people were great.
-
Thanks for sharing the story Eric. Mailed out the GS13 registration today.
-
Cool story! Humboldt area is pretty tight knitted and has some real cool old timers! Thanks for sharing yours and others efforts and WAY TO GO VALLEY LUMBER!!! Maybe etch their name in the back of one of the boards as big thanks? Idk...

Great story Eric !!! Troy and Skip are two of the best people you will ever meet. He knows most everyone in Ferndale and treats everyone as if they are family. That lumberyard has a lot of history, and used to love watching them change over the belts to run each piece of equipment. They are truly the kind of people that will change how you look at life. It's like stepping back in time when people cared about each other. Glad you got to meet them !!!

10 more days to register. Hopefully this weekend we'll get a preview of what salmon season should produce.

Rebuilt the Mirage Drive
Tied a butt load of leaders
Poured a bunch of weights
ReSpooled and lubes the reels
Then got the news .....
Verna has to leave town for a memorial service on the 13th. (Salmon Opener)
I will be land locked till Monday or Tuesday playing Inn Keeper
Good news is ...... All of you have a head start and a fighting chance!

Secret to success ...... pleated vacuumed bags .... 5 noodles per bag. Fits nice and snug in each side of the hull.

A couple dozen more entries will trickle in by mid next week when I make my gear order, and my focus will switch to bulking up the raffle.
If anyone has a donation for the raffle it's highly appreciated. All proceeds will be donated to the Shelter Cove Fishing Preservation Inc. - this is a newly formed non-profit group led by fishing interests in Shelter Cove such as charter boats, kayakers, commercials and sporties. The Humboldt Bay Harbor District is abandoning the Cove, so it's up to the locals to take over maintenance and operations of the tractor launch, the fish cleaning station, access and upkeep - including the road down the hill and where we park for launching and landing.
Please feel free to call me directly with any ideas for raffle items or other event issues. My number is right under the message body on each of my posts. Thanks! :smt001

Just wanted to tell everyone that I talked with Eric and he gave me approval to sell decals at GS. I will bring my decal cutter and can make pretty good size decals. All profits from sales will go the the Shelter Cove Preservation foundation. I'm going to try and work on a few ideas to have ready for the event.
So if you want your name on your kayak and want to support the cove bring some cash!
Here is a quick run on some vinyl I had on hand. The butt decal is 22" wide for accurate reference. Haha

For sure! I just found out we will be in site 42 Thursday night so come by! If any of you have an idea of what you want in the way of a custom decal let me know asap so I can start working on it and grabbing some images. Not sure on pricing just yet but I'm thinking 5-10 for smaller decals and 30-40 for 3 footers for the kayak name decals. Any ideas let me know, all profits go to the cove!
Thanks for doing this Snipeworm.

I love your crema sauce and will eat as much as I can!
But the sad news is that Jack and his shack can't attend - his daughter is graduating from college that day.
I'll make fish tacos Sunday afternoon - please bring some crema! :smt001

Hey all-
I am chaperoning a canoe trip on Friday for my daughters 8th grade trip. I won’t be able to get to the cove until after dark. As such I am not going to be able to bring oysters for after the safety meeting.
See you all next weekend!

Bring your rain gear it's been dry for a month and mother decided it's going to be a wet GS this year. Hopefully that's not the case, but we are overdue on the last rains before a dry summer.
-
I don't trust the weather forecast that long ahead. We are due for a beautiful weekend weather this year!

Sorry Eric, not gonna make it this year. Wife is in Italy and I've got the dog. If I manage to snag a canceled RV site I'll bomb up there with the Sprinter and fish a couple hours during the tourney.
Regardless, I'd like to donate if you have a PayPal or Venmo. Love this tourney and all the work you put into it.

Rob - Thanks for the forecast. I agree with Sonny. :smt001
However the weather turns out, we're going to catch some really nice fish!

Whoa!

That above picture only proves how wrong the forecast can be!
Today was overcast and breezy most of the day
Felt like mid to upper 50's

The forecast is looking interesting to say the least! I think prospects are good for plenty of fishable water from Thursday to Monday, but we'll have some rain and potential big swell and south wind part of the time...
Woohoo!!!
-
I have to scratch the itch! ... rain or shine I’ll will fish at GS13! See you guys there!
-
Anyone doing a gear swap/sale up there?
I’ve got a bunch of 2 and 3# lead weights I’d like to get rid of if anyone is interested.
Aloha,
Isao
-
Forecast can still change, but Wednesday and Thursday look the worst then the seas come back down. That south wind and 3ft south swell will make for fun rides back. At least the high tide is only 4.9ft at 12:19. The launch will have plenty of beach space with a -1.2ft tide at 5:58. Today and tomorrow look awesome😁
-
Weather is looking great...this is normal weather for a GS weekend! :smt005
I remember the last rainy GS like 2 years ago?? Never seen the campgrounds so empty before. Some people even left in the middle of the night on a Thursday. :smt044 :smt044

The older I get the less I am inclined to go out on bad days. I’m keeping an eye on the conditions. Rain doesn’t bother me but south wind+south swell is not exciting.
Likely going to skip the prefishing if the forecast holds. Wednesday looks marginal and Thursday looks like trash.
Will be fun to watch the landings at the beach in any event.

Regardless of the forecast, I'm still going. My first GS! Hopefully the weather is decent enough Saturday, and if not I'm always down to party!

Safety first but. Party on land worst case :smt006

Last year, many said they wanted to do a gear swap at the Tides ….. NOBODY showed.
If you are looking to swap the lead for any freshwater gear, I have tons that I don't use.
Mostly new in box premium lures and such (I ran a tackle store for 30 years)

Weather window is not looking to good for pre-fishing and unfortunately it is a 7.5 hr ride for me. My grand plan was to be there Tuesday night. It's vacation time to include my father as well. Looks like I may end up fishing locally with my father here in the Monterey bay. :smt001
I look forward to this tournament every year Eric. :smt001 .
Still a few days to think about it. Hope to see you all there. If not... Hopefully I will be posting pics of halibut or salmon myself from the Monterey bay area. :smt004

Friday is not looking too bad, that may be the only window this year. Saturday blows though... going out in 20 knot winds is just asking for trouble.

I do look forward to the fishing but have come to enjoy the area and seeing familiar faces more. I was really looking forward to getting there early, dropping some pots , chasing some pacific halis on my 15.5 aluminum and chilling with my Dad. I couldn't see my Dad being tossed up in some rough sea's as being enjoyable for him.. :smt005

You will not end up on highway 1 at any point on your trip from Sacramento unless you intentionally go out of your way for some reason.

Saturday is a full moon, so we should have good light Friday night, early Saturday. With the window of opportunity at 3 am to 9 am is it legal to fish at night?

Thursday looks to be a doozy, everybody! Strong wind and heavy rain will likely keep everyone off the water for most if not all of that day.
Friday on the other hand... it looks very good!
Saturday - I hope we can get OTW, but it looks iffy for offshore trolling. We may be just competing near the moorings and toward the Bell. I'll make a call that morning about any restrictions that I may need to impose on the fishing area.
Sunday into Monday looks pretty good.
We will figure a way to compete and we will execute the tourney activities in any case, so bring your rain gear and get ready to enjoy the challenge! :smt001
-
Eric,
Thanks for maintaining that safety is a top priority. Stewarding a group this large of varying ability OTW is a huge undertaking. Thank you so much for putting on this event and making our yearly shelter cove run one of our favorite trips of the year.
Aloha,

My only concern is the launch/landing conditions. I'm still on the mend.
I'll still bring the Eddy but sounds like I'll be a bystander.
Besides Crash invited me to stay at his site how sexy is that !?!?
lol I’m seriously considering leaving the kayak at home and just coming to hang out. Friday looks good, but I’ll be on Humboldt Bay that day.

Not this weekend. On the wagon with some health issues, drinking is not in the cards. Hopefully we can find a dry place to have a cigar or 3 tho.

Contrary to popular myth , Spiffy is not a large volume drinker , I am however gifted with a well endowed gift of gab not uncommon to those of Irish ancestry . I foresee tall tales and stories of grand deeds accompanied by a little warmth from a few small nips of Irish whiskey ( not that Jamieson crap ) surrounded by those who themselves are no strangers to thrilling adventures Lir has placed them in upon the sea.

I got to the Cove around 530 this afternoon. Steady rain while I unloaded my truck for over 2 hours - it was an epic load!
Tomorrow is destroyed! No one's getting on the water - it'll be ridiculous, and coming right into the launch.
Friday still looks potentially decent.
Saturday looks iffy... Believe me, I'll be giving much thought to alternative means of determining the AOTD if we can't launch and be safe.
Here are the half-full parts of the story: :smt001
- the raffle should have better odds!
- the Gyotaku will be solid, no matter what!
- Captain Jake says Sunday looks fishable to him - the trip is on at this point! He's planning to fish Friday.
If Friday is our day, I think people need to think about saving a few whole fish on ice for the Gyotaku. Thanks for considering it.
The Gyotaku, potluck and raffle will go on no matter what, and I'll be working with Jack to see if we can basically take over his pavillion and the patio all day Saturday with some pop-ups added.
Don't forget your rain gear, and prepare to have fun! :smt001
-
I tried today and it was not pretty. Occasional larger swell crashing over my AI in 25' of water, well past the breakers. If you had to pick between a surfboard and a kayak you might want the surfboard.

To lazy to walk! Friday morning at the cove !
-
Today was our window. Several dozen of NCKA's finest got out for fishing on amazingly reasonable seas after how yesterday looked. Somewhat predictably, the fish weren't biting well after the rough weather, but most of us got some bites and all had a good time in the sun and easy atmosphere of the Cove.
Tomorrow is forecast to be a return to hurricanish… The tourney has been adapted to it. We will make the most of a wet and windy adventure Saturday!
112 of 160 bags handed out - the community is here. Gimme Shelter is going strong. :smt001

Boom! Another awesome event in the books. We didn't get to fish from yaks today, but about 10% of the field tried for perch, and we had a ball doing Gyotaku, potluck and raffle in the campground pavilion until dusk.
The generosity of the community and the ability of the people to deal with adverse conditions and still be totally conscientious and positive never ceases to amaze me. Through a robust raffle, we raised $4692 for Shelter Cove Fishing Preservation Inc.!
Angler of the day with a 14.375" striped perch - Rob Bray / Matanaska. He gets a seat on the Seahawk for tomorrow, plus a guest seat, and he took home an oldgrowth redwood Trophy Trough, a 10" trophy abalone shell and a few other goodies.
2nd place was Brian Takagi / Ooter1. He gets a seat on the Seahawk for tomorrow too.
A 10" trophy ab shell for Killer Catch went to 7 year old veteran Cove fisherman (!), Zac Kelly, who scored a lingcod while offshore on a tandem with his dad.
Community recognition abs went to Kiet Pham for helping out a capsized brother and to Bradley Potts for helping to free a baby seal that was tangled in netting offshore.
Volunteer appreciation abs went to Scott Harrison and Christine Davies for their veteran Gyotaku experience and assisting so many of the participants in what has become such an awesome part of the event.
Another 10" trophy ab went to Dylan Taube for his generosity in raffles and everything else he touches, and a final 10"er went to Tim Butolph / Snipeworm for his impressive effort during the entire potluck and raffle where he and a few key volunteers made $500 worth of custom stickers - all proceeds above his material costs were donated to the SCFPI.
8 kids printed Gyotaku shirts and showed them off at the raffle/potluck, and every kid got a brand new fishing pole as a prize.
Adam Koons and his crew brought in a whole cooked pig! The potluck was outstanding, per NCKA tradition.
I'm so honored to be in a position to facilitate this event and to work with such a wonderful group of people.
I'm toast, and it feels great. Much Love from the Cove. :smt001

Great bunch of people! Adverse conditions made it quite an adventure. Didn't bring the kayaks this year but came over to help with the Gyotaku and had a great time. Love the looks on the peoples faces when they pulled their paper or shirts off the fish! "Wow, that turned out neat!". Great to see old friends and make some new ones. Today the sun was out almost all day - a few people made it outside to fish, but I think it was very slow. Big swell, volatile winds... We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Finally got to do some fishing today.🎣🙂 Caught some nice size perches off the jetty! Thank you Tim for the shrimp! Less than 20 minutes on the jetty and you got a story to tell!
-
Quan stuck it out for hours today! Diehard perch fishing and a beautiful day at the ramp. :smt001

She sure did! It started to rain, we all bailed, Quan fished on, undeterred, WTG!

I only captured a few images and stoked you, HoJoMan and Eric took photos. Here is the link to my images. I will repost this info to the Gyotaku thread. https://www.facebook.com/brandi.easter/media_set?set=a.10218013633506964&type=3
Thanks again for making the journey to help out with the Gyotaku Extravaganza! MUCH appreciated!!
That looks awesome! I can't wait to go next year. no matter the weather!
-
People made it out on the water today. No salmon love for me only some ling cods and a greenling.
-
So thankful for some time on the water after how bad it's been, but it was still bad today. Glad it was at least fishable, but I don't want people to think they missed out on a "good day" weather- or bite-wise.
It's still rough out there, and the salmon aren't biting - only the powerboats got some today, but only slivers and shakers.
Several yaks tried for salmon, and plenty of rockfish and lingcod were caught - bite still not great though.
I spent some hours trying for chrome, got a consolation prize. :smt001

Made to the tournament but was not able to make it on the water. Still had a great time at Shelter Cove. See all of you again next year. Thanks Eric for all of the hard work you put into this event.

Had a great time! Thanks everyone! I think those that have these have earned them... It was no joke out there!

Thanks Quan for the assistant landing of that pair of perch after my rod broke and the weight got stuck in the rocks, Hope they taste as great as it was to catch them :smt001. Glad to see the gifted shrimp worked out for you and Joe. We just happened to hit the hot bite. Thanks for posting the pictures.

A couple of pics to share. We had such a great time despite the weather. Thank you Stockwell's and Brandi and all the other volunteers. Thank you to all that donated raffle prizes for the fundraiser for Shelter Cove.

Rebuild we did! Herb, Dan and I got drenched repairing this, but we got it done!! Herb's duct tape and rope saved the day. Also, thanks to Joe for letting us salvage/steal his broken canopy! No thanks to Ariel for pointing us in the wrong direction! :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Wow, Howard - great job - as always. I'm so stoked to see some scenes that I didn't get to see in person.
We made the most of our time at GS13, and I feel sorry for anyone who didn't come! See you next year I hope. :smt001
